Main trade-off
Insta360 Ace Pro 2
Endurance disables hands-free controls and charging while recording. FreeFrame stabilization effects need an app or Studio export.
Head-to-head
Choose Ace Pro 2 for its flip screen or planned 8K30 crops. Keep Endurance off for voice, gesture control or charging while recording. Choose Action 5 Pro for two compatible direct wireless microphones or its 47 GB card-free fallback. Microphones cost extra, and the third-party DJI seller and US warranty need checking. Do not buy DJI’s Subject Tracking for dog walks. It explicitly excludes pets and stops at 2.7K.
Before you choose
For cooking, crafts or a small repair, the camera may sit below eye level while both hands are occupied. Ace’s flip screen lets you inspect that low framing from above. Normal modes also offer voice and gesture control. Switching to Endurance disables both controls and charging while recording, so you cannot combine that longest-running mode with the same hands-free setup. Choose a normal mode and plan power, pauses or a spare battery instead. Action 5 has fixed front and rear touchscreens and voice commands, with DJI recommending a relatively quiet setting within 1 m. A noisy extractor or power tool can make any voice-controlled plan unreliable, so test the actual working space before buying around it.
What this is based on
Low camera placement crossed with occupied hands, environmental noise and documented mode exclusions. No measured voice-recognition success, accessibility benefit or safe proximity to tools is inferred.

Main trade-off
No flip-up screen, and Subject Tracking is unsuitable for pets and limited to 2.7K. The linked offer is third-party.

Ace Pro 2 helps with low-mounted self-filming and 8K crops. Action 5 Pro suits two-person audio. Compare hands-free, editing and storage restrictions.
These are direct rivals for family outings, rides and self-filming. Both can make ordinary 4K video, but their useful advantages appear in different parts of a complete recording routine.
Winner by situation
Ace’s flip screen is easier to view from above. Keep Endurance off if voice or gesture controls are needed.
DJI documents the two-transmitter setup. Ace supports selected Bluetooth microphones, but concurrent two-transmitter support is unresolved here.
Ace 8K supplies enough ideal crop pixels at 30 fps. Keep the subject in the intended crop and allow editing time.
DJI explicitly excludes pets. Ace pet tracking is not established by the reviewed evidence.

If you want one horizontal recording to become both a TV film and a 4K portrait clip, Ace’s 8K30 mode has a useful geometric advantage. A centered 9:16 crop from 7680×4320 is 2430×4320, enough source pixels to downsize to 2160×3840 before any extra correction or crop. Action 5’s taller 4K source is 3840×2880, giving a 1620×2880 portrait crop, which is below that 4K portrait target. This does not mean Ace records twice the visible detail or guarantees a sharp subject. The subject must stay inside the intended portrait region, and 8K handling adds editing work. For 1080p phone sharing, DJI’s source can already cover the pixel target, so Ace’s extra resolution may not repay the work.
Ideal portrait crop width equals source height×9÷16.4320×9÷16=2430 and 2880×9÷16=1620. Compared with 2160×3840 and 1080×1920 targets. Assumes a usable source and no additional stabilization, lens-correction or reframing crop. No measured detail claim.
Both people may want to talk while one holds the camera. Action 5 Pro has documented support for two direct wireless transmitters, so neither person has to rely only on a microphone beside the lens. Ace Pro 2 also supports a DJI Mic 2 Bluetooth connection, so it is wrong to assume it always needs a receiver hanging from the USB port. The missing piece is verified simultaneous support for two direct transmitters on Ace. Choose DJI when two direct microphones are a firm requirement, and buy compatible transmitters separately. If you already own one supported microphone and film alone, that particular advantage disappears. No microphone count proves better sound in wind, and the microphone’s weather limits remain separate from the camera’s.
Two speakers at different distances crossed with verified concurrent transmitter support. Ace two-transmitter support remains unknown rather than falsely declared absent. No comparative sound quality, range or water protection is inferred.
A family walk can put a child, an adult and a dog in the same frame. DJI explicitly says Action 5’s Subject Tracking is unsuitable for pets and other non-human subjects. It also stops automatically reacquiring a person after losing them for more than 10 seconds, and needs a fresh lock and recording restart. That makes it a poor reason to upgrade for a dog weaving behind people or furniture. It is also a 2.7K mode rather than 4K. Ace’s flip screen can help a person frame a shot, but it does not establish automatic pet tracking either. For this outing, buy around framing, mounting, sound and the ordinary recording workflow rather than assuming either camera follows the whole family by itself.
Mixed human and pet subjects crossed with DJI’s explicit tracking exclusions, reacquisition limit and output ceiling. Ace tracking capabilities are not invented from its flip screen. Neither recommendation implies unattended supervision or guaranteed capture.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | Insta360 Ace Pro 2 | DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low camera and occupied hands | Flip-up touchscreen. Voice and gesture control disabled in Endurance mode. | Fixed front and rear touchscreens. Voice control recommended within 1 m in a relatively quiet place. | Ace helps with viewing angle, but its longest-running setting removes the hands-free controls you may have chosen it for. |
| Two people with clip-on microphones | DJI Mic 2 Bluetooth support verified. Two simultaneous direct transmitters not established here. | Two compatible DJI wireless transmitters supported. | Both have a receiver-free route for supported audio. DJI has the documented two-person route, which matters more than a generic Bluetooth label. |
| A portrait crop from a horizontal source | 8K 16:9 records 7680×4320 at up to 30 fps. | Maximum 4K 4:3 source is 3840×2880. | An ideal 9:16 crop can retain 2430×4320 from Ace 8K versus 1620×2880 from DJI4:3. This is pixel geometry before extra crop, not a measured quality score. |
| Card missing after yesterday’s edit | No internal video storage. | 47 GB usable internal storage plus microSD. | DJI can record if internal space remains. Ace needs a card, and neither automatically solves backup or yesterday’s full storage. |
| A level horizon without a separate export | FreeFrame horizon effects require Insta360 app or Studio export. | Full HorizonSteady is processed in supported modes up to 2.7K16:9 or 1080p at 60 fps. | Choose the workflow and output limit before shooting. Ordinary Ace video and FreeFrame are different paths. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Insta360 Ace Pro 2. Ace serves that setup. Normal modes are required when you need hands-free controls or charging while recording.
Choose DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. DJI documents both. Confirm the third-party offer and US warranty, and budget microphones separately.
Choose neither. DJI excludes pets, and no equivalent Ace capability has been verified. Do not buy either on that assumption.
What matters in practice
Seeing a low camera, keeping both hands free and stretching recording time can require incompatible settings.
