Main trade-off
Insta360 Ace Pro 2
FreeFrame horizon effects require an app or Studio export. Endurance disables voice and gesture controls and charging while recording.
Head-to-head
Choose Ace Pro 2 for low-mounted self-filming with a flip screen. Keep Endurance off when you need voice or gesture controls. Choose HERO13 for a tall source you will crop both ways, or full in-camera Horizon Lock at 4K60. Its tall 5.3K file retains more vertical pixels than Ace’s wide 8K file, without proving sharper video. Both can supply a 4K portrait crop with careful framing. Nearby detail needs a separate manual-focus GoPro lens.
Before you choose
For one family moment that needs both a wide film and a portrait clip, the source shape matters. Ace’s 8K 16:9 file is 7680×4320. HERO13’s 5.3K 8:7 file is 5312×4648, which keeps 328 more vertical pixels despite the smaller resolution label. An ideal 9:16 crop is 2430×4320 from Ace and about 2615×4648 from HERO13. Both can cover a 2160×3840 portrait target before extra processing. HERO13 gives more vertical pixel margin, while Ace gives more horizontal room. Neither calculation promises sharper footage or a wider optical view. Keep the subject inside both intended crops and test the final export before relying on one take for two audiences.
What this is based on
Verified file dimensions crossed with two output shapes.4648−4320=328. Portrait width is source height×9÷16. Lens correction, stabilization, subject placement and rounding can reduce usable crop. This is geometry rather than a measured image-quality ranking.

Main trade-off
No flip-up screen. Close-focus detail needs a separate manually focused Macro Lens Mod, which is unsuitable underwater.

Ace Pro 2 has a flip screen and 8K. HERO13 keeps more vertical pixels in its tall 5.3K mode. Compare portrait crops, horizon exports and nearby filming.
These are direct-rival cameras for the same family trip or mounted sports recording. A higher headline resolution does not settle how useful the file will be when the final clip has a different shape.
Winner by situation
Both source formats have useful crop room. HERO13’s tall 5.3K mode retains more vertical pixels, without establishing better image quality.
Ace’s flip screen addresses that viewing angle. Its focus distance still needs checking for nearby objects.
HERO13 supports in-camera Linear+Horizon Lock. Ace FreeFrame requires a finishing export.
Ace’s ordinary lens is outside its documented focus range. HERO13’s separate macro accessory covers 11 to 75 cm.

After a ride or an outing with children, you may only have time to copy a clip and send it. HERO13 can apply full Horizon Lock in its supported 4K60 Linear mode, with the narrower view and crop that mode brings. Ace’s FreeFrame horizon effects need an Insta360 app or Studio export before they appear in the finished file. That extra step can be worthwhile when you want to choose the view later. It is less useful when the whole reason for buying a small camera is to finish quickly. Ordinary Ace video does not inherit every FreeFrame export requirement, so choose the actual mode rather than treating all Ace footage alike.
Limited post-outing editing time crossed with in-camera horizon processing versus FreeFrame export. No render-time estimate or comparative stabilization quality is asserted. HERO13 4K120 uses a different horizon mode.
A flip screen is convenient when a camera sits low beside a workbench or kitchen preparation area. Ace makes that view easy to inspect, but its documented minimum focus is 37 cm. Bringing a small object much closer can therefore defeat the reason for choosing that angle. HERO13 lacks the flip screen but has a separate Macro Lens Mod with 11 to 75 cm manual focus. That is a useful alternative when close detail is the actual job and you can set the focus deliberately. It adds cost and another lens to manage. The macro lens should also come off before underwater use, so a camera shared between hobby filming and beach trips needs a lens-change routine.
Low placement and nearby detail crossed with screen articulation, positive minimum focus and a model-specific manual-focus accessory. No autofocus, medical, handling or underwater accessory benefit is invented.

Insta360, CINSBBGA Midnight Black single-battery bundle
Use a flip-up screen to check low-mounted self-filming. Keep Endurance off for voice, gesture or charging while recording.

GoPro, CHDHX-131-TH Black
Use tall 5.3K 8:7 capture for separate horizontal and portrait crops. Frame for both outputs before the moment.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | Insta360 Ace Pro 2 | GoPro HERO13 Black | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tall source for two different edits | 8K 16:9 is 7680×4320 up to 30 fps. | 5.3K 8:7 is 5312×4648 up to 30 fps. | HERO13 keeps 328 more vertical source pixels despite the smaller resolution label. Ace keeps more width. Choose around the final crop. |
| Ideal portrait crop | A 9:16 crop from the 8K 16:9 source is 2430×4320 before extra processing. | A 9:16 crop from 5.3K 8:7 is about 2615×4648 before rounding and extra processing. | Both exceed a 2160×3840 portrait target geometrically. Framing, lens correction and stabilization can consume the spare room. |
| Camera low on a table | 2.5-inch flip-up touchscreen. | Fixed front display and rear touchscreen. | Ace can be inspected from above without lifting a low camera. Check mount and cable clearance. |
| Finish a level-horizon clip | FreeFrame horizon effects need Insta360 app or Studio export. | Linear+Horizon Lock is available in-camera at 4K60 16:9. | HERO13 offers a direct supported path. Ace FreeFrame adds a finishing step, while its ordinary recording is a different workflow. |
| Very close detail | Minimum focus 0.37 m. | Separate Macro Lens Mod gives 11 to 75 cm manual focus and is not intended underwater. | A small craft part nearer than 37 cm needs a different Ace setup. HERO13 has a documented accessory route, with extra cost and focus work. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Insta360 Ace Pro 2. Ace’s flip screen fits the setup. Keep the subject at a documented focus distance and choose the required control mode.
Choose GoPro HERO13 Black. HERO13 has the documented source shape and supported in-camera mode. Both still need careful framing.
Choose neither. Check the final output shape first. HERO13’s lower-labeled tall mode can already supply a 4K portrait crop.
What matters in practice
The camera with the larger resolution label can leave less vertical cropping room, while the easier screen can come with an extra export step.
