Main trade-off
DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro
Two microphones remain separate purchases. Internal memory is finite, and Subject Tracking stops at 2.7K.
Head-to-head
Choose Action 5 Pro for two people speaking, or for 4K120 footage you want to crop both horizontally and vertically. It accepts two compatible wireless transmitters directly and retains a taller 4:3 frame at 120 fps. Action 4 accepts one transmitter and switches to 16:9 at that speed. Keep or choose Action 4 for solo filming when a prepared card and 4K60 tall footage cover the job. Our linked DJI packages are third-party Amazon offers, so confirm seller, exact contents and US warranty before buying.
Before you choose
On a walking trip, one person may hold the camera while both want to talk. Action 5 Pro accepts two compatible wireless transmitters directly, so each person can have a microphone without attaching a receiver to the camera. Action 4 accepts only one direct transmitter. A two-person arrangement therefore needs a different audio setup or a separate recording workflow. This is a useful Action 5 upgrade even if the final film is only 1080p. For solo narration, that second link does nothing. Direct wireless audio also lets the camera’s USB cover stay shut, although the microphones have their own weather limits and should not be treated as waterproof.
What this is based on
Two independent speakers crossed with one-versus-two direct transmitter support and a closed camera port. Assumes compatible charged transmitters and current firmware. No measured audio quality, wireless range or microphone water rating is inferred.
Main trade-off
Two microphones remain separate purchases. Internal memory is finite, and Subject Tracking stops at 2.7K.
Main trade-off
Two people cannot each use a direct transmitter at once. Its 4K120 recording is 16:9, with no internal storage fallback.

Action 5 Pro adds two-person wireless audio, card-free recording and taller 4K120 footage. See when those differences justify replacing an Action 4.
A solo rider and a couple filming a trip can need different cameras even when both want 4K120. These generations compete for the same small mounted-camera job, with a few concrete reasons to pay for the newer model.
Winner by situation
Action 5 accepts two compatible direct transmitters. Action 4 accepts one, so a different setup is needed for two people.
Action 5 retains 4:3 at 120 fps. Action 4 needs 60 fps for its tall 4:3 mode.
Action 5 can use available internal space. Action 4 requires a card.
Action 4 covers one direct microphone and ordinary 4K120. Check the current total package price before paying for features outside that routine.
What matters in practice

If one take needs a wide family film and a vertical clip for relatives, a jumping subject can move out of the narrow portrait crop. At 4K120, Action 5 records 3840×2880 in 4:3, while Action 4 records 3840×2160 in 16:9. Action 5 keeps 720 more vertical source pixels, or one-third more height at the same width. That gives an editor more room above and below the subject. It does not guarantee that the subject remains inside both crops, and it does not establish a wider optical view. Action 4 regains the same 4:3 pixel dimensions at 60 fps, so the upgrade is most useful when you need both the taller frame and the slower final motion.
(2880 − 2160) ÷ 2160 = 33.3% additional source pixel height at equal 3840-pixel width. This compares documented file dimensions, not field of view, image detail or stabilization quality. Final crop and playback speed depend on editing.
A card can be forgotten in a laptop reader after yesterday’s edit. Action 5 still has a recording destination if its 47 GB internal space is available. Action 4 cannot record video without a card. On a beach day, preparing that internal space at home is also preferable to opening a wet camera to solve a card problem. The benefit disappears if yesterday’s clips already fill the memory. Copy and verify them, then clear space before leaving. Neither the extra storage nor the presence of a card establishes simultaneous backup, and neither camera should be opened wet just because a clip is urgent.
A card left in a reader crossed with available internal capacity and manufacturer dry-compartment precautions. No recording duration is estimated because bitrate varies. No duplicated-storage behavior is assumed.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro | DJI Osmo Action 4 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two people speaking | Two compatible DJI transmitters connect directly. | One compatible DJI transmitter connects directly. | Action 5 can remove the receiver from a two-person setup. The microphones themselves still need buying, charging and weather protection. |
| One slow-motion take for TV and phone | 4K120 supports 3840×2880 4:3. | 4K120 uses 3840×2160 16:9. 3840×2880 4:3 stops at 60 fps. | At 120 fps, Action 5 retains 720 extra vertical source pixels. That is 33% more height at equal width, before crop and editing. |
| Card left at home | 47 GB usable internal storage, plus microSD support. | No internal video storage. A microSD card is required. | Action 5 can keep the outing recordable if its internal space is clear. This is not automatic duplicated recording. |
| A rolling camera and a level horizon | Full HorizonSteady tops out at 2.7K16:9 or 1080p, up to 60 fps. | Full HorizonSteady has the same resolution and frame-rate ceiling. | Paying for Action 5 does not give full 360-degree horizon leveling at 4K120. Decide which requirement comes first. |
| The package on Amazon | Standard Combo, third-party offer. No microphones included. | Essential Combo, third-party offer. Curved adhesive base excluded. | Compare the complete setup after adding the correct mount and microphones, and check US warranty terms. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. Two compatible transmitters connect to Action 5. Confirm firmware and buy the microphones separately.
Choose DJI Osmo Action 4. Action 4 may cover the actual need. The Essential package needs the intended mount checked separately.
Choose neither. Neither provides full HorizonSteady in that format. A camera upgrade does not remove this mode conflict.
What matters in practice
Keeping the camera setup small becomes harder when a second person needs a microphone or one take needs two different crops.
