Best for this need

One family moment, a TV film and a portrait clip

Our pick

GoPro HERO13 Black

GoPro HERO13 Black

Choose GoPro HERO13 Black for one take you will edit for both TV and a phone. Its tall 5.3K mode keeps more vertical pixels than Ace Pro 2’s wide 8K mode, without proving sharper video. Choose Ace instead when its flip screen makes a low camera easier to frame. Both need careful subject placement and time to edit. For tall 120 fps footage, the DJI alternative below changes the crop and purchase checks.

HERO13 records 5312×4648 in 5.3K 8:7 at up to 30 fps. That leaves an ideal portrait crop of about 2615×4648 before other processing. Frame for both outputs and allow time to edit. This pixel margin does not establish better image quality.

Why it fits this need

  • Tall 5.3K 8:7 capture leaves room for both picture shapes at up to 30 fps
  • The ideal portrait crop exceeds 2160×3840 before further processing
Main trade-off
Tall 5.3K 8:7 stops at 30 fps. Both finished clips still require cropping, and the pixel margin does not prove sharper video.
Choose Insta360 Ace Pro 2 instead when
A low-mounted camera needs a screen you can see from above. Its 8K30 source also has enough pixels for an ideal 4K portrait crop. Endurance disables voice, gesture and charging while recording, and FreeFrame effects need export.
More reasons behind this pick
  • Higher frame rates, horizon modes and editing time still need separate checks

What matters in practice

How to choose for this need

Choose the recording shape and frame rate for both finished clips before recording the moment.

01

A higher resolution label can leave less room above and below the subject

Ace Pro 2’s 8K 16:9 file is 7680×4320. HERO13’s 5.3K 8:7 file is 5312×4648. GoPro therefore keeps 328 more vertical source pixels, while Ace keeps much more width. For a child jumping with adults standing either side, those are different advantages. Decide whether the portrait edit needs the child alone or the whole group. Neither camera can recover people cropped out of the recorded picture, and pixel dimensions do not establish optical field of view.

02

Work backward from the portrait file you actually need

For an ideal 9:16 crop, retained width equals source height multiplied by 9 and divided by 16. That gives 2430×4320 from Ace’s 8K file and roughly 2615×4648 from HERO13’s tall 5.3K file. Both exceed a 2160×3840 portrait target before rounding, lens correction or further stabilization. Action 5 Pro’s 3840×2880 source yields 1620×2880. It can still make a useful phone clip, but a 4K portrait export would involve enlargement. These are file-geometry calculations, not a sharpness test. Check a sample export in your actual editor.

03

A fast jump can change the shortlist more than a family holiday can

At 120 fps, Action 5 Pro retains its 3840×2880 4:3 mode. HERO13’s tall 4K 8:7 mode stops at 60 fps, and Ace Pro 2’s 4K 4:3 mode also stops at 60 fps. Their ordinary 4K120 modes use 16:9. A 120 fps source played on a 30 fps timeline permits four-times-slow playback, provided you can edit it and the light suits the shot. DJI combines that timing with a taller source. If you only want ordinary-speed holiday clips, that benefit may not justify changing camera or buying a more demanding recording workflow.

04

The parent operating the camera needs a usable position too

Ace’s flip-up screen is helpful when a small tripod sits below eye level and you need to check the view from above. Normal modes offer voice and gesture control, but its Endurance setting switches those controls off and also prevents charging while recording. A long battery headline therefore cannot be used to promise a hands-free, externally powered family setup. Set the camera down safely, choose the actual mode and test the commands at the intended distance before everyone gathers.

05

Cropping room and a level horizon can be competing choices

HERO13 can apply full Horizon Lock in its supported 4K60 Linear mode, which changes the view. That is a different choice from keeping the tall 5.3K 8:7 source for later cropping. Ace FreeFrame horizon effects require app or Studio export. DJI’s full HorizonSteady is limited to 2.7K or 1080p up to 60 fps, even though other 4K stabilization options exist. Do not assemble the best feature from each mode into a recording mode that the camera cannot deliver.

06

Finish one clip before collecting a weekend of unfinished footage

A single take saves repeating the moment, but two outputs still need framing, export and a place to store the files. Before the trip, record a short sample in the chosen mode and make both finished versions on the phone or computer you will use. Afterward, copy and verify the footage before clearing a card or internal storage. Action 5 Pro’s 47 GB internal space is a fallback when a card is missing, not an automatic second copy. Charge, dry and prepare the camera for the next outing as part of the same routine.

Check these before buying

  • Test both output shapes with the people or objects in their expected positions.
  • Confirm the exact aspect ratio at the frame rate you need.
  • Check editor, phone and computer support for the selected format before travel.
  • Buy a suitable card and any required mount or spare battery separately.
  • For the linked DJI offer, confirm seller, exact package and US warranty.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • Source dimensions describe pixel geometry, not measured image quality, lens coverage or retained detail after processing.
  • Mode-specific features are not interchangeable. Firmware, light, heat, storage and editing support can change the practical result.
  • These cameras are not supervision or safety devices.

GoPro HERO13 Black

GoPro, CHDHX-131-TH Black

GoPro HERO13 Black

A good fit when one camera must cover rides, tall footage for later cropping and close-up work with an optional lens. GPS puts ride data in the camera file. The separate Macro Lens Mod can focus much closer than the ordinary setup, but it is manually focused and should come off before underwater filming.

Winner whenHERO13 records 5312×4648 in 5.3K 8:7 at up to 30 fps. That leaves an ideal portrait crop of about 2615×4648 before other processing. Frame for both outputs and allow time to edit. This pixel margin does not establish better image quality.

Insta360 Ace Pro 2

Insta360, CINSBBGA Midnight Black single-battery bundle

Insta360 Ace Pro 2

The flip-up screen helps when the camera sits low on a table or faces you on a small tripod. Normal modes offer voice and gesture control, while 8K30 gives an editor more cropping room. Its longest-running Endurance mode disables those hands-free controls and charging while recording, so choose the mode around the whole shoot.

Choose instead whenA low-mounted camera needs a screen you can see from above. Its 8K30 source also has enough pixels for an ideal 4K portrait crop. Endurance disables voice, gesture and charging while recording, and FreeFrame effects need export.

Decisive facts

  • 8K up to 30 fps and 4K up to 120 fps, with a 2.5-inch flip-up touchscreen.
  • 1/1.3-inch-type sensor, minimum focus 0.37 m and no internal video storage.

Trade-off

Single-battery package. Endurance mode removes voice and gesture control, remote connection, horizon lock and charging while recording.

DJI, Osmo Action 5 Pro Standard Combo, EAN6941565989512

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro

A practical travel camera when two people need clip-on microphones or a forgotten card would spoil the day. It can take two compatible wireless transmitters directly and has 47 GB of usable internal storage. Choose recording modes carefully. Subject Tracking stops at 2.7K, and full horizon leveling does not work in every 4K mode.

Choose instead whenThe same quick movement needs a tall source at 120 fps. Its 3840×2880 file leaves an ideal 1620×2880 portrait crop, below 2160×3840. Confirm the third-party seller, Standard Combo contents and US warranty.

Decisive facts

  • 146 g with a 1/1.3-inch-type sensor and front and rear touchscreens.
  • 4K 4:3 at up to 120 fps records 3840×2880. 4K 16:9 also reaches 120 fps.

Trade-off

The verified Standard Combo is a third-party Amazon offer. Confirm the seller, exact package and US warranty before paying.
