Main trade-off
Insta360 X5
200 g body. Quick 4K InstaFrame output loses the surrounding recording, and in-camera tracking excludes pets.
Head-to-head
Choose X5 when you want to select another person for the quick clip or slow spherical footage beyond 50 fps. Choose X4 Air for lighter ordinary travel capture and self-facing clips. Both retain ordinary 8K30 filming and need a card. Air cannot manually choose the person its InstaFrame 1.0 selfie view follows, and X5’s tracking does not follow pets.
Before you choose
One adult may hold the pole while the child walks beside them. X4 Air’s InstaFrame 1.0 cannot be told to follow that child. It favors the holder or the largest person and can choose randomly when candidates are the same size. X5’s updated mode lets you select one human. That makes X5 the better fit when the value of the camera is a ready clip centered on someone else. Both can keep ordinary spherical footage for later reframing, so Air is still a reasonable choice when you are willing to choose the child in the edit. X5 does not solve every family shot automatically. It tracks one person, and its in-camera mode excludes the dog.
What this is based on
Separate camera holder and intended subject crossed with target-selection rules and tolerance for later editing. No accuracy or uninterrupted tracking claim. Ordinary spherical capture is distinct from the automatic flat clip.

200 g body. Quick 4K InstaFrame output loses the surrounding recording, and in-camera tracking excludes pets.
Main trade-off
No manual target choice in InstaFrame 1.0. Spherical video stops at 50 fps below 8K.

X5 can follow a chosen person. X4 Air is lighter but its quick clip may follow the holder. Compare family framing, slow motion and lens-repair work.
Both are current 8K30 travel cameras from the same system. A lighter body and a selectable subject are competing priorities for someone carrying a pole while filming other people.
Winner by situation
X5 allows one human to be selected. Air’s automatic selection may favor the holder.
Air removes 35 g of body weight while retaining 8K30 sphere recording. Include the rest of the rig.
X5 reaches 120 fps in 4K sphere mode. Air’s 50 fps ceiling does not supply that timing without generated frames.
X5 explicitly excludes animals in this mode. Air has no verified manual pet-tracking route. Later editing remains available.

Air weighs 35 g less than X5. With the same pole and mounting position, less camera mass means less load at its far end, which can matter when you repeatedly hold it away from your body while walking. The 17.5 percent reduction applies only to the camera, not the pole, mount or complete kit. A heavier protective case or a longer pole can change the setup far more than that body difference. Choose Air for a deliberately light ordinary recording rig. If keeping the child in a ready clip saves you an evening of editing, X5’s extra 35 g may be the more useful trade. No comfort benefit or suitability for a physical condition has been measured here.
(200−165)÷200=17.5 percent camera-mass reduction, with identical pole and camera placement assumed. No measured fatigue, leverage threshold or accessibility claim.
For ordinary travel footage, both cameras record an 8K sphere at 30 fps. For a child’s jump or a brief cycling maneuver that you want to inspect in slow motion, the lower-resolution frame-rate ceiling changes the choice. X5 can record 4K spherical video at 120 fps. Air stops at 50 fps. Played on a 30 fps timeline, those sources permit four-times-slow and roughly 1.67-times-slow playback respectively. The 4K label covers all directions, so the final chosen view will not have the detail of a native flat 4K recording. Buy X5 if that extra timing is a recurring need. For normal-speed holiday clips, Air does not need to match 120 fps to do the job.
Capture-frame-rate divided by 30 fps playback. Assumes an editor that interprets frames without interpolation, adequate light and a usable subject view. No coaching, safety or measured sharpness claim.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | Insta360 X5 | Insta360 X4 Air | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| A child walking beside the pole holder | Select one human in InstaFrame 2.0. | InstaFrame 1.0 chooses holder or largest human automatically. | X5 lets you select a person, while X4 Air chooses automatically. That difference matters before a quick clip is sent. |
| Body weight on a handheld pole | 200 g. | 165 g. | Air removes 35 g, or 17.5 percent of X5 body weight. The complete rig’s percentage saving is smaller. |
| Slow a short jump after choosing the angle | Spherical 4K120 or 5.7K60. | Spherical 4K50 or 6K50. | On a 30 fps timeline,120 fps allows 4×slow playback while 50 fps allows about 1.67×. These are frame-rate ratios, not sharpness results. |
| A scratched lens during the trip | Owner replacement with tools, clean dry conditions and calibration. | Owner replacement with tools, clean dry conditions and calibration. | Neither model makes a dusty roadside lens swap a sensible repair plan. Carry protection and plan an indoor repair or service. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Insta360 X5. X5 has documented selectable-person framing and higher spherical frame rates.
Choose Insta360 X4 Air. Air keeps 8K30 in a 165 g body. Accept automatic quick-clip selection or edit later.
What matters in practice
The lightest camera may make a quick clip of the person holding it instead of the child you wanted to film.
