Main trade-off
Insta360 X5
4K InstaFrame output requires dropping the surrounding recording. In-camera tracking is human-only.
Head-to-head
Choose X5 when a ready 1080p clip alongside the full scene or selecting one person will reduce your editing backlog. Keep X4 in the decision when you already edit ordinary 8K30 footage and the complete kit fits your budget. X5’s quick 4K setting sacrifices the surrounding recording, and its in-camera tracking excludes pets. Neither camera fixes a close subject pressed against the lens.
Before you choose
X4 can already capture the whole scene in 8K30. The practical X5 upgrade for a busy household is a smaller editing commitment. InstaFrame can leave a 1080p flat clip ready to send while keeping the surrounding recording for the weekend edit. With updated firmware you can select the person, useful when you hold the pole but want the child in the clip. If your normal routine already includes reframing every worthwhile take, that shortcut may not change much. Also resist choosing 4K flat automatically on X5. That setting requires disabling the surrounding recording, so it gives up the other angles you bought a 360 camera to preserve.
What this is based on
An edit backlog and a different intended subject crossed with simultaneous-file restrictions and updated target selection. No claim that the mode removes all editing or reliably chooses every important moment.
Main trade-off
4K InstaFrame output requires dropping the surrounding recording. In-camera tracking is human-only.
Main trade-off
No InstaFrame mode. Removable lens guards are not evidence of an equivalent optical-lens repair procedure.

X5 adds a quick family clip and a lens-repair route. X4 still records 8K30 for planned edits. Compare the real upgrade boundary, pet limits and slow motion.
This is a direct-generation buying or upgrade choice. Both serve an 8K30 shoot-first, frame-later routine, so the new purchase needs to solve something the existing camera does not.
Winner by situation
X5 offers a quick 1080p clip while retaining the scene, with mode and subject restrictions.
X4 still meets that recording requirement. The current full-kit price can decide the purchase.
X5 reaches 120 fps in 4K sphere mode. X4 reaches 100 fps.
X5’s in-camera mode explicitly excludes animals. X4 has no equivalent InstaFrame mode, though both can be edited later.

A family trip may mix a crowded bag, short stops and a camera repeatedly put down. X5 has a documented optical-lens replacement procedure. X4 documents removable protective guards, which are not the same part. The X5 kit can provide a route back to filming after a scratch without treating the whole camera as disposable, but the procedure requires tools, a clean dry indoor setting and calibration. That is worth considering for someone away from home for several weeks. It is a weaker reason to replace a working X4 used for occasional local outings with careful lens protection. Severe damage and uncertainty still belong with service support.
Travel duration and consequences of interrupted filming crossed with documented repair scope. No breakage probability, repair cost, warranty coverage or X4 physical impossibility inferred.
If you want to slow a brief jump while choosing the angle later, X5’s 4K120 sphere gives four-times-slow playback on a 30 fps timeline. X4’s 4K100 gives about 3.33-times-slow. That is useful extra timing, but it is not a jump from ordinary video to slow motion. Both already support 5.7K60 and 8K30 spherical capture. Keep X4 if its timing covers your use and spend time learning the framing and export that make the footage usable. Choose X5 when 120 fps is a specific requirement or its ready-clip workflow also solves another problem. Neither full-sphere 4K mode should be advertised as a native flat 4K detail result.
120÷30=4,100÷30≈3.33 and 120÷100−1=20 percent. Same playback rate, no generated frames, no measured detail or low-light advantage.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | Insta360 X5 | Insta360 X4 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| One event, a quick clip and a later edit | InstaFrame saves 1080p flat plus sphere, or 4K flat without sphere. | No InstaFrame dual-recording mode. | X5 can save a flat clip and the surrounding scene together. At 4K flat, that advantage disappears. |
| Choose the person in the quick clip | One selected human in InstaFrame 2.0, with current firmware. | No equivalent InstaFrame mode. | The upgrade helps when the camera holder is not the intended subject. It does not establish automatic pet tracking. |
| Ordinary spherical recording | 8K30 and 5.7K60. | 8K30 and 5.7K60. | If those modes already cover your outings and you edit afterward, resolution alone does not establish an upgrade need. |
| A very brief move slowed afterward | 4K120 sphere. | 4K100 sphere. | At 30 fps playback the timing is 4× versus 3.33×slow. The 20 percent frame-rate increase is narrower than a generic sports-camera upgrade claim. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Insta360 X5. Those are tangible X5 benefits. Keep the 4K/360 restriction and repair preparation in the decision.
Choose Insta360 X4. X4 remains a plausible purchase or keeper. A new generation alone is not a reason to replace it.
What matters in practice
You want fewer unfinished family videos without paying to replace a recording routine that already works.
