Main trade-off
GoPro MAX2
No verified in-camera dual flat-plus-sphere equivalent. The manual says underwater use is unsuitable due to distortion.
Head-to-head
Choose X6 for quick 4K clips with the full scene retained, documented pet tracking or a missing-card fallback. Choose MAX2 for built-in GPS and the selected bundle’s two batteries, pole and card. MAX2 needs an editing workflow for reframed 360 clips and is unsuitable underwater. X6’s underwater case adds a lens change, and its repairable lenses still need calibration.
Before you choose
MAX2’s selected bundle includes a 64 GB card, so the first outing does not depend on remembering to buy one separately. X6’s 47 GB internal space becomes useful on a different day, when the card is still in a laptop after yesterday’s edit. A card supplied in the box cannot rescue that absence, while free internal space can. For a household sharing one camera, the distinction is worth more than simply comparing nominal storage sizes. Make a habit of copying and verifying footage, returning the card and clearing space before the next outing. Neither the included card nor internal storage automatically gives you a second copy.
What this is based on
Shared equipment and interrupted post-outing reset crossed with removable versus internal storage. No equivalence between nominal 64 GB card capacity and 47 GB usable internal space, and no backup guarantee.
Main trade-off
No verified in-camera dual flat-plus-sphere equivalent. The manual says underwater use is unsuitable due to distortion.
Main trade-off
The separate dive case needs underwater lenses. Scratch repair requires calibration and severe damage needs support.

Compare MAX2’s GPS and included accessories with X6’s quick 4K clips and pet tracking. See the editing, card, repair and underwater trade-offs.
Both target a premium 360 buyer who wants one camera for trips and sport. X6 adds a different immediate-sharing workflow, while MAX2’s selected package and GPS can simplify a ride kit.
Winner by situation
X6 has the documented simultaneous 4K flat and 8K sphere mode.
MAX2 documents built-in GPS. X6 needs a supported external GPS-data source.
X6 explicitly supports pet tracking. Equivalent MAX2 in-camera dual-file tracking is unverified.
MAX2 removes the calibration step. Both need a clean dry workspace.

If the camera comes along on dog walks but the spherical files rarely get edited, more capture resolution is not the main missing feature. X6 can track a pet in InstaFrame 2.0 and save a ready 4K clip with the surrounding 8K recording when backup is enabled. That gives you a direct sharing route and leaves other angles available. MAX2 can record the walk in 360, but the reviewed manual does not establish an equivalent in-camera pet-tracked flat file alongside it. Choose MAX2 if you already enjoy the Quik reframing workflow or ride data matters more. X6 tracking remains a manufacturer capability, not proof that it will follow every animal through crowds or behind furniture.
Frequent pet outings, low editing tolerance and optional later reframing crossed with positively documented mode combinations. Missing MAX2 equivalent is treated as unverified, not proof that pets cannot be filmed.
MAX2 avoids calibration after replacing its optical lens, useful when a scratch would otherwise interrupt a multi-day trip. It still needs a dry dust-free repair setting. X6’s scratch procedure includes calibration and has limits for severe damage. Yet MAX2’s manual also rules out underwater use because of distortion. X6 offers a dive-case route, but its CasePro requires fitting underwater lenses. A traveler moving between rides and snorkeling should therefore choose around the actual second job and the preparation they can manage. Do not treat either replaceable lenses or a water rating as permission to skip the relevant procedure.
Trip continuity crossed with repair steps and a second underwater use case. No repair-time estimate, underwater image-quality ranking or guarantee after damage.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | GoPro MAX2 | Insta360 X6 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ride data without another GPS device | Built-in GPS for supported overlays. | No built-in GPS. Uses supported phone, remote or imported activity data. | MAX2 removes an external data-source step. Both still need reception, suitable footage and a supported editing workflow. |
| A 4K clip now and a different angle later | POV and Selfie are spherical-file views in Quik. Single-lens video is a separate path. | 4K30 flat plus 8K30 sphere in InstaFrame with backup enabled. | X6 keeps a 4K flat clip and 8K sphere together. MAX2’s view selection should not be described as the same two-file recording mode. |
| The dog is the intended quick-clip subject | No equivalent in-camera pet-tracking flat-file mode verified here. | Pet tracking explicitly supported in InstaFrame 2.0. | X6 has the documented direct route. Both can capture ordinary 360 footage for later editing. |
| Forgotten card after last night’s edit | MicroSD required,64 GB card included in this bundle. | 47 GB usable internal space. | Including a card solves first-day setup. Internal space solves a different problem when the card is absent later. |
| Reset after a scratched lens | Replacement without calibration, clean dry setting required. | Scratch replacement with kit and calibration, severe damage needs support. | MAX2 has fewer post-replacement steps. Neither should be opened on a wet or dusty trail. |
