Main trade-off
EcoFlow RIVER 2
The 300W inverter rules out most heaters, kettles and corded tools. The 600W X-Boost headline is not full-voltage continuous output.
Head-to-head
Choose RIVER 3 if its 100W USB-C port or shorter standard backup transfer fits your equipment. Keep RIVER 2 in contention for modest loads, since it has slightly more nominal battery capacity and the same 300W AC rating and 110W solar ceiling. RIVER 3 does not make a 500W appliance suitable for this small-station class.
Before you choose
RIVER 3 has about 4.3% less nominal capacity than RIVER 2.
What this is based on
(256 − 245) ÷ 256 × 100 = 4.3%. Different conversion losses can outweigh this gap in actual use.
Main trade-off
The 300W inverter rules out most heaters, kettles and corded tools. The 600W X-Boost headline is not full-voltage continuous output.
Main trade-off
The base model is 300W AC, not the 550W combined-port or 600W X-Boost headline.

Compare the standard EcoFlow RIVER 2 and RIVER 3 by laptop charging, battery capacity, solar input and backup transfer without confusing UPS variants.
RIVER 3 improves the USB-C connection while keeping the same basic AC and solar limits.
Winner by situation
RIVER 2’s port is capped at 60W.
Both have ample output for small loads and similar nominal capacity.
Both have a 300W continuous rating.
Both allow up to 110W solar input within their voltage and current limits.
What matters in practice
RIVER 3 has about 4.3% less nominal capacity than RIVER 2.
(256 − 245) ÷ 256 × 100 = 4.3%. Different conversion losses can outweigh this gap in actual use.
RIVER 2 falls 30W below that requested power, while RIVER 3 has 10W of port headroom.
90 − 60 = 30W and 100 − 90 = 10W. Power Delivery negotiation, cable capability and the laptop’s state still govern actual draw.
It exceeds each 300W continuous AC rating by 200W.
500 − 300 = 200W. Boost modes for selected resistive appliances are not treated as standard 500W output.

EcoFlow, EFR600
A 7.7-pound station for lights, phones and modest laptop loads. Its 256Wh battery is easy to carry, with a one-hour advertised wall recharge.

EcoFlow, EFR705
A flat, light battery for small electronics and short trips. The 100W USB-C port makes it more useful for a laptop than the older RIVER 2, while the AC sockets remain a modest 300W supply.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | EcoFlow RIVER 2 | EcoFlow RIVER 3 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery capacity | 256Wh | 245Wh | RIVER 2 stores 11Wh more nominal energy. |
| Continuous AC output | 300W | 300W | Both remain small-load stations. |
| Maximum USB-C output | 60W | 100W | RIVER 3 better suits a compatible laptop above 60W. |
| Maximum solar input | 110W | 110W | The new generation does not increase accepted solar power. |
| Listed weight | 7.7 lb | 7.8 lb | The nominal carrying difference is only about 0.1 lb. |
| Standard-model transfer time | 30ms | 20ms | This RIVER 3 comparison is not the separately named 10ms UPS variant. |
What you give up
What matters in practice
Choose RIVER 3 for a connection you will use, not an assumption that a new generation stores more energy.
A laptop that accepts 90W over USB-C cannot receive that full amount from RIVER 2’s 60W port. RIVER 3 provides up to 100W with a suitable cable and compatible device. A 30W tablet receives no benefit from the higher ceiling, so checking your actual charger or device specification is more useful than comparing the largest number.
RIVER 3 holds 245Wh compared with RIVER 2’s 256Wh. EcoFlow promotes efficiency improvements, but a product specification alone cannot establish the runtime of your equipment. Use the capacity figures for a transparent planning estimate and avoid assuming the later model will always outlast the earlier one under every load.
The 300W continuous AC rating is the hard starting point for either model. A 500W appliance is outside that rating even if a special boost mode is advertised for selected loads. Likewise, 110W solar acceptance keeps both in the small-panel class. For cooking equipment or longer reserve, move up a size rather than expecting this generation change to solve it.
What the facts say
Useful conclusions from the current portable power stations comparison, followed by the checked facts used to reach them.
Only 7 of 50 models checked match every need here: “I need to carry it with one hand”, “I want power for campsites and weekends away”, and “I charge modern laptops directly”.
7 matching models from 50 checkedMatch countThe count uses the current product-to-need assignments for “I need to carry it with one hand”, “I want power for campsites and weekends away”, and “I charge modern laptops directly”. A need with no documented match does not count.
