Main trade-off
Insta360 Luna Ultra
8K and 4K portrait restrict continuous wide-to-tele switching. Stage sound processing can reduce narration from behind the camera.
Head-to-head
Choose Luna Ultra when a fixed seat or barrier makes its separate 60 mm-equivalent lens useful. Use a supported lower-resolution mode if you must switch continuously between wide and tele views. Pocket 3 is lighter and can reuse compatible DJI microphones for ordinary tracked video, but has no optical telephoto lens. Its selected Capture More Combo is a third-party offer. Check the seller, exact box and US warranty.
Before you choose
At a school performance, a small venue or an event with assigned seats, changing your position may be impossible or inconsiderate. Ultra’s separate 60 mm-equivalent lens offers a tighter native view than the 20 mm lens from that same seat. Pocket 3 uses a 20 mm-equivalent lens and digital zoom. Ultra therefore solves a real positioning constraint, but only if you choose a mode that fits the whole performance. In 8K and 4K portrait, it cannot continuously switch across the wide-to-tele lens boundary while recording. For a wide group followed by your child’s part in one uninterrupted take, use an eligible mode such as landscape video up to 4K60. Try the movement before the performance starts. The longer lens does not see around people, and no camera makes an unsuitable seat suitable.
What this is based on
Fixed seating and social constraints crossed with native focal lengths and resolution-dependent lens switching. 60/20 equals 3 focal-length ratio, not three times measured detail. No claim about a particular venue distance.

Main trade-off
The 20 mm-equivalent lens has no optical telephoto partner. Digital zoom and moving the camera are different ways of changing the view.

A buyer moving beyond a phone may want one small stabilized camera for walks, family events and self-filming. Pocket 3 is the lighter wide-angle option, while Ultra adds a separate tighter lens. Their differences matter most when the filmer cannot freely move or interrupt the take.
Winner by situation
Ultra adds the 60 mm-equivalent lens. Check the seat, view and recording mode before buying for a specific venue.
Ultra offers the lens choice in eligible modes. 8K and 4K portrait restrict continuous switching. Pocket has only digital zoom.
Pocket’s body is 54 g lighter. Add actual handles, microphones and tripod weight before comparing complete kits.
Pocket supports compatible direct DJI transmitters. Confirm generation, camera seller and US warranty.

A quiet recording of a performance and a parent explaining what is happening are different audio jobs. Ultra’s Stage mode deliberately reduces the filmer’s speaking voice. That may suit a clip focused on the stage, but it can work against commentary, a grandparent’s reaction or a spoken explanation behind the camera. Use normal Video when that voice belongs in the finished film. This is a setting decision to make before an unrepeatable moment, not an audio defect to discover afterward. Pocket’s documentation here does not establish the same dedicated processing, which does not make its microphone a tested winner. With either camera, a person speaking far from the built-in microphones may need a correctly connected external mic and a short listening check.
Desired sound source changes between audience performance and narrated family memory. Crossed with positive documented voice suppression on Ultra. No negative feature or sound-quality claim inferred for Pocket.
Pocket’s 179 g body is 54 g lighter than the selected black Ultra. That is a useful packing fact, but the selected Capture More package also has a battery handle and mini tripod. Count the equipment you will actually carry. Ultra’s 47 GB internal storage can rescue an outing when a card is still in the laptop, provided there is space left. It also adds a separate remote to charge if you rely on its preview. The practical choice is between a lighter prepared Pocket kit and Ultra’s storage fallback plus extra filming options. Neither replaces the evening reset. Copy and verify footage, return the card, check remaining storage and protect the gimbal from pressure in the bag. Neither should be treated as a rain-ready action camera.
Multi-day family trip crossed with full-kit weight, removable-card handling, internal capacity and remote charging. 233 minus 179 equals 54 g body-only difference. No endurance, comfort or failure-rate estimate.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | Insta360 Luna Ultra | DJI Osmo Pocket 3 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| A closer view from an assigned seat | Separate 20 mm and 60 mm-equivalent lenses. | 20 mm-equivalent lens with digital zoom. | Ultra adds a native 60 mm view from the same seat. It cannot remove a head, barrier or other obstruction in front of the lens. |
| Wide group to one performer in one take | Continuous lens switching needs eligible lower-resolution settings. 8K and 4K portrait restrict it. | No separate tele lens to switch to. | Set Ultra’s mode before the event. Choosing its maximum resolution can remove the smooth change of view you bought it for. |
| Talking while filming the stage | Stage mode intentionally reduces the filming person’s voice. | The cited standard audio workflow does not establish equivalent dedicated Stage processing. | Use normal Video on Ultra if your commentary belongs in the clip. The absence of comparable documentation is not proof of better Pocket sound. |
| Evening self-filming | Tracking available in PureVideo. | ActiveTrack unavailable in Low-Light mode. | Ultra preserves that mode combination. Pocket still tracks ordinary Video, and image quality depends on the actual scene. |
| Body weight and the forgotten card | 233 g selected black body. 47 GB usable internal space. | 179 g body. No internal video storage. | Pocket is 54 g lighter before accessories. Ultra can record without a card when its internal space is free. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Insta360 Luna Ultra. Ultra makes sense when reach changes the shot. Use the right mode for continuous switching and narration.
Choose DJI Osmo Pocket 3. Pocket can cover ordinary tracked video with less body weight. Confirm the third-party package and warranty.
Choose neither. That requested combination is not supported here. Change the recording plan before buying.
What matters in practice
You want a closer view of the performance without standing up in front of everybody else.
