Head-to-head

Synology DS1825+ vs DS1525+: Eight bays fit a larger archive, the CPU and RAM ceiling match

The short answer

Choose DS1825+ when six to eight SATA drives must remain inside one chassis or a supported 25GbE card is part of the plan. Choose DS1525+ when five internal bays fit and its narrower chassis is useful. Both publish the same Ryzen V1500B, 8 GB ECC starting memory and 32 GB maximum, so the larger unit mainly changes storage and expansion hardware.

Before you choose

The reasoning and the trade-offs

The sixth drive can avoid an entire expansion box

DS1825+ fits six SATA drives internally with two bays remaining. DS1525+ has five internal positions.

What this is based on

Eight minus six leaves two. A six-drive layout exceeds five by one.

Main trade-off

Synology DiskStation DS1825+

The 343 mm width needs a suitable shelf and clearance.

Main trade-off

Synology DiskStation DS1525+

Only five SATA drives fit inside the original enclosure.

About this comparison

Compare DS1825+ and DS1525+ for six drives without an expansion box, a 25GbE upgrade and the width of the storage shelf.

Choose DS1825+ when six to eight SATA drives must remain inside one chassis or a supported 25GbE card is part of the plan. Choose DS1525+ when five internal bays fit and its narrower chassis is useful. What matters in practice

The differences that matter

The sixth drive can avoid an entire expansion box

DS1825+ fits six SATA drives internally with two bays remaining. DS1525+ has five internal positions.

How we reached this conclusion

Eight minus six leaves two. A six-drive layout exceeds five by one.

A 25GbE plan selects the larger card platform

DS1825+ documents compatible 25GbE network cards. DS1525+ documents the 10GbE mini-module route.

How we reached this conclusion

Both start with dual 2.5GbE. The faster connection requires an additional supported adapter.

A 320 mm shelf opening rules out one chassis

The published widths are 343 mm and 230 mm. Only DS1525+ fits within a 320 mm opening before extra clearance.

How we reached this conclusion

343 minus 320 equals a 23 mm overrun. 320 minus 230 leaves 90 mm before ventilation or handling allowances.

What you give up

Every choice has a cost

If you choose Synology DiskStation DS1825+

  • Faster Ethernet requires an additional compatible card.

If you choose Synology DiskStation DS1525+

  • Its dedicated network module route stops at the documented 10GbE option.

Recommendation switch

The decision flips if...

Six to eight internal SATA drives or 25GbE is required

Choose Synology DiskStation DS1825+. DS1825+ provides the larger internal layout and card route.

Five bays fit and shelf width matters

Choose Synology DiskStation DS1525+. DS1525+ is 113 mm narrower.

I need more than 32 GB supported RAM

Choose neither. Both publish a 32 GB maximum.

What matters in practice

How to make the call

01

The sixth drive can avoid an entire expansion box

If the archive already needs six drives, DS1825+ keeps the physical layout in one NAS chassis. DS1525+ requires a different drive plan or a separate supported expansion unit. Compare the complete enclosures, power connections and cabling. This does not endorse spanning a storage pool across enclosures or promise an in-place migration.

02

A 25GbE plan selects the larger card platform

If the workstation and switch plan truly calls for 25GbE, choose the model with the documented card support and verify the exact adapter. For a 10GbE network, either has an upgrade route but the card format differs. Do not buy a general PCIe card for the mini-module slot or expect 25GbE from the DS1525+ 10GbE accessory.

03

A 320 mm shelf opening rules out one chassis

Measure the real opening and leave the manufacturer-required cooling and service access. The wider DS1825+ cannot fit the example even before extra clearance. The smaller model retains the same published processor, starting ECC memory and memory ceiling, so a five-drive job does not automatically lose those resources by choosing the narrower enclosure.

Check these before buying

  • Verify the adapter format and its model-specific compatibility list.
  • Measure cooling, cable and drive-removal clearance as well as case width.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • No matched throughput, acoustic, power or application test was performed. Expansion-bay totals include separately purchased DX525 units.
