Head-to-head

Synology DS1525+ vs Synology DS925+: 1525+ leaves an extra internal bay for archive growth

The short answer

Choose DS1525+ when five starting bays or expansion to fifteen matters. Choose DS925+ for a smaller four-bay installation.

About this comparison

Synology DS1525+ and Synology DS925+ compared by drive layout, network and processor, best use.

The practical choice turns on drive layout and network and processor, then on the constraints in your own setup.

Before you choose

How they fit your plans

Many shared folders can hit the system snapshot limit first

Suppose sixteen project folders each retain 200 snapshots. The 3200 total fits DS1525+’s documented system limit but exceeds DS925+’s, even though each folder is below the shared 256-per-folder ceiling. Choose DS1525+ for that specific retention count, subject to storage capacity. Choose DS925+ when a leaner policy is adequate. Neither can retain every hourly point for fourteen days in one folder under the published per-folder limit.

Facts behind this advice

16 times 200 equals 3200, compared with 4096 and 2048 system limits. Fourteen days at one point per hour requires 336, exceeding both 256-per-folder limits. Snapshot storage consumption is separate.

A very large expanded volume also needs a memory budget

If the eventual archive needs a single volume larger than 108TB, both models require 32GB memory under Synology’s specification. Neither supplied configuration clears that condition. Choose DS925+ if its supported expansion count meets the drive plan, or DS1525+ when its larger expansion route is needed, but price compatible memory with either. Adding drive enclosures alone does not complete that large-volume configuration.

Facts behind this advice

DS1525+ ships with 8GB and DS925+ with 4GB. Both list 200TB as a maximum single-volume option requiring 32GB. Drive compatibility, RAID capacity and separately purchased DX525 hardware still constrain the result.

Winner by situation

Start with what you need it to do

  • Protect family photos

Redundant storage and remote photo access protect the library while keeping it usable.

  • Survive two drive failures

For drive layout, Synology DiskStation DS1525+ records “5 storage bays” and Synology DiskStation DS925+ records “4 storage bays”. This describes the working hardware or mechanism. The label alone does not prove faster or better results.

  • Start with four drives

Four bays allow parity storage while leaving more usable capacity than a two-drive mirror.

  • Store camera recordings

For network and processor, Synology DiskStation DS1525+ records “10 Gbps network. Best treated as file storage” and Synology DiskStation DS925+ records “2.5 Gbps network. Best treated as file storage”. This affects connection compatibility and available data paths. A higher label does not guarantee the same real-world result in every setup.

What you give up

Every choice has a cost

If you choose Synology DiskStation DS1525+

  • 10GbE and extra bays require additional hardware.

If you choose Synology DiskStation DS925+

  • Expansion adds bays but not 10GbE.

What matters in practice

How to make the call

01

The useful difference

Both use Ryzen V1500B and dual 2.5GbE.

02

What the numbers change

DS1525+ starts with five bays and reaches fifteen.

03

The trade-off

DS925+ starts with four bays and reaches nine.

Check these before buying

  • Required drive bays after protection
  • Maximum supported drive size
  • Network port and upgrade path
  • Plex or camera software support
  • Memory and expansion limits

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • Drive compatibility changes over time.
  • Real transfer speed depends on the full network and drive array.
  • Plex behavior depends on the exact media format and client.
