Sony a6700 body
Body only. 4K120 crops the view and cannot record internal proxies. The exact codec and S&Q choice change the card requirement.
Head-to-head
Sony slows 4K action, while Fujifilm gives one take more room for two orientations. Choose a6700 for 4K120 when its crop and media requirements fit the job, especially if you already own compatible E lenses. Choose X-S20 for 6.2K 3:2 recording when one take needs both a horizontal film and a portrait edit. That Fujifilm mode stops at about 30fps. Both offers are body-only, both have one card slot, and neither headline mode guarantees an uninterrupted long recording.
Before you choose
X-S20’s 6240×4160 recording gives a portrait 9:16 crop about 2340×4160 pixels before stabilization, rotation or other adjustments. A 4K 3840×2160 landscape source yields about 1215×2160 for the same portrait shape. Both can support a 1080×1920 portrait export in principle, but Fujifilm leaves more room to reposition or crop further. That helps when a family event needs a television version and a vertical clip. Keep the person inside both planned frames because extra pixels cannot recover someone who left the image. The 6.2K option is limited to about 30fps and still needs editing.
What this is based on
4160×9/16=2340 and 2160×9/16=1215. Geometric center-crop dimensions before processing, not measured detail. Compare 6.2K 3:2 with 4K 16:9 at ordinary frame rates, not Sony 4K120.

a6700 vs X-S20 for family films, sport and vertical clips. Compare the crop, proxy workflow and optional cooling before choosing a body and lens.
These are close APS-C hybrid bodies with stabilization, viewfinders, side-hinged screens and audio monitoring. They compete for the same portable photo-and-video setup while prioritizing different recording flexibility.
Winner by situation
The taller 6.2K 3:2 source leaves more portrait crop room.
X-S20 stops at 4K60.
Changing to X mount means a separate lens plan.
It is an optional X-S20 accessory, not a runtime guarantee.

Sony’s 4K120 can make a short sports movement easier to slow down while keeping 4K output. It also narrows the view and disables internal proxies at that frame rate. If you edit on a modest laptop after the children go to bed, generating proxies later can become part of the job. X-S20’s 4K60 offers less slowdown at the same playback frame rate, but its tall 6.2K mode solves a different problem, reframing rather than fast action. Decide which output you repeatedly need. Buying for the largest video number can leave you with the wrong lens framing and a workflow you rarely finish.
a6700 crop and 120p proxy restrictions, X-S20 4K60 and 6.2K30 inventory. Editing burden is conditional on computer and software. No codec benchmark or universal smoothness claim.
For a long indoor interview or warm-weather event, X-S20 has an optional FAN-001 cooling route. Buying that fan does not add battery energy, card capacity or a second recording slot. Both cameras still use one SD card, and both need recording settings and power suited to the session. Sony may remain the better purchase if the E lenses you own already solve the job and you do not need Fujifilm’s taller source. Fujifilm earns its place when that recording format or documented accessory route is useful. Test a representative take before an important event rather than treating an accessory as an unlimited-recording promise.
Fujifilm optional fan, body-only package and one card slot. Sony E body and one slot. Independent power, thermal and storage constraints, without predicted failure time.

Sony, ILCE6700/B
You want 4K slow motion and can accommodate its tighter view, mode-specific media and lack of internal 120p proxies.

Fujifilm, 16781852
You film an event once and want room to crop a horizontal and a vertical version from a 6.2K 3:2 source at up to 29.97p.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | Sony a6700 body | Fujifilm X-S20 body | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two orientations from one take | Internal 4K 16:9 source | 6.2K 3:2 at 6240×4160, up to 29.97p | Fujifilm preserves more vertical source pixels for a portrait crop. |
| 4K high-speed option | Up to 119.88p with extra crop | 4K up to 59.94p | Sony offers more slowdown while retaining 4K, with a different framing plan. |
| High-speed editing support | No internal proxies at 120p/100p | 6.2K is a separate up-to 30p workflow | The desired output determines the workload after copying files. |
| Cooling accessory | No FAN-001 attachment in this system | Optional FAN-001, purchased separately | An accessory path must not be confused with guaranteed runtime. |
| Lens and card setup | E-mount body only, one UHS-II SD | X-mount body only, one UHS-II SD | Existing lenses and independent backups still matter. |
