Main trade-off
Fujifilm X-M5 body
No IBIS or viewfinder. The tall 6.2K mode also disables digital IS, making support or lens OIS important.
Head-to-head
X-M5 saves 136g, while X-S20 adds stabilization for a non-OIS lens. Choose X-M5 for a supported filming setup where its separate sound connections and 6.2K 3:2 do the job. Choose X-S20 for frequent handheld still scenes, a viewfinder and the same tall recording option. Both are body-only with one card slot. Neither permits digital stabilization in 6.2K 3:2, and IBIS cannot freeze a moving child or pet.
Before you choose
A home creator may begin on a tripod, then buy a small non-OIS prime for family outings. That second use changes the value of X-S20. Its IBIS can reduce camera shake in handheld still scenes with that lens, while X-M5 has no sensor stabilization to add. Buying an OIS zoom can change the X-M5 setup again, so price the actual lens before treating the lighter body as the lighter complete kit. Neither form of stabilization stops a running child or a turning pet. Shutter speed, light and subject movement still determine whether that part of the photograph is sharp.
What this is based on
Body IBIS inventory crossed with conditional OIS and non-OIS lens use. No measured stabilization or autofocus ranking.
Main trade-off
No IBIS or viewfinder. The tall 6.2K mode also disables digital IS, making support or lens OIS important.
Main trade-off
Adds 136g before the lens and changes the battery family to NP-W235. Still only one card slot.

Fujifilm X-M5 vs X-S20 for a home filming setup and family outings. Follow the lens, tall video mode, viewfinder and spare batteries before choosing.
Two current 26MP X-mount bodies with the same tall video dimensions and separate audio sockets. A buyer moving between a home filming position and everyday photography has a real reason to consider both.
Winner by situation
X-M5 keeps the same tall source in the lighter body.
X-S20 adds sensor-shift stabilization.
X-S20 requires a different battery family.
X-M5 has no EVF.

When a suitable tripod already holds the camera, X-M5 retains the same 6240×4160 3:2 recording dimensions and separate mic/headphone sockets that make X-S20 useful for two edits. A full-height portrait crop is 2340×4160 on either, before additional cropping. X-S20 does not create a larger crop budget in this mode. That makes X-M5 a sensible smaller body for a repeatable desk setup. The restriction travels with the recommendation: both stop at 29.97p in 6.2K and disable digital stabilization there, and neither promises unlimited recording because it can accept an optional fan.
4160×9/16=2340. Equal recorded dimensions, deliberate framing and supported setup assumed. Heat, card and power remain separate limits.
With the same lens, X-M5 saves 136g. But a household sharing batteries with another Fuji should check the labels before counting the whole saving. X-M5 uses NP-W126S while X-S20 uses NP-W235, so one pool of spare batteries cannot serve both. X-S20 also adds a viewfinder for the day out, where a desk-oriented screen-only setup may be less convenient. Try the viewfinder with any glasses you normally wear and the lens attached. These are handling choices, not a claim that one body fixes eyesight or is universally comfortable.
491-355=136g, verified battery and viewfinder inventory. Actual lens, spare count and individual handling are not assumed.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | Fujifilm X-M5 body | Fujifilm X-S20 body | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tall internal movie | 6240×4160 up to 29.97p | 6240×4160 up to 29.97p | The heavier camera does not buy a taller source in this mode. |
| Camera and lens stabilization | No IBIS, OIS depends on lens | IBIS with compatible lenses | A non-OIS prime changes the handheld-stills decision. |
| Composition outdoors | Rear screen, no EVF | Rear screen and EVF | An eye-level option can matter after leaving the desk. |
| Body with battery/card | 355g | 491g | X-M5 saves 136g before adding the same lens. |
| Spare battery family | NP-W126S | NP-W235 | An existing set of spares does not transfer between these bodies. |
