Best for this need

Two wired satellites need three gateway sockets before your desktop

Our pick

TP-Link Deco BE63 3-pack

TP-Link Deco BE63 3-pack

Choose Deco BE63 for a 2.5G network with two directly wired satellites and one local desktop or NAS. Deco X55 also connects both satellites without a switch, but its gateway has no socket left after those cables and the internet connection.

Why it fits this need

  • At least three gateway sockets including WAN
  • Two LAN links at the intended backhaul rate
Main trade-off
It has no 10Gbps Ethernet, so very fast NAS or internet links top out at 2.5Gbps per port.
Choose TP-Link Deco X55 3-Pack instead when
Gigabit links are enough and no local device needs a gateway socket.
More reasons behind this pick
  • A spare gateway socket if a local device needs one
  • Separate satellite device-port checks

Find mesh kits that connect two satellite cables directly at the gateway. Count the internet socket, room branches and space for a local desktop.

What matters in practice

How to choose for this need

For a direct wired star, count one gateway connection per satellite plus the internet connection. Add another for every local device.

01

A three-pack does not promise a three-node wired star

Many three-packs use identical two-port units. Once the main unit takes the internet cable, one socket remains. Both satellites cannot connect directly to that single socket without a switch. A daisy chain is a different topology and consumes another satellite port.

02

Keep the WAN socket in the count

Four-port BE63 and the Orbi 770 gateway can take the internet cable, two room cables and one local device. Three-port X55 uses all its sockets for internet and the two rooms. Its satellite ports are still usable for local devices.

03

Port speed matters after the count works

A gateway with enough sockets can still limit fast rooms if the LAN ports are only gigabit. Match the desired rate across the main unit, room cable termination and satellite uplink. A two-gigabit plan needs more than a fast WAN socket.

Worked example

Internet plus two rooms plus one desktop

This common layout needs four gateway connections. The fourth connection is easy to overlook.

FormulaSpare gateway sockets = total ports − 1 WAN − 2 satellite branches

  • The gateway provides the router function.
  • Each satellite has its own cable to the gateway.
  • No Ethernet switch is used.
Internet plus two rooms plus one desktop
ScenarioGateway portsAfter WAN and two branchesLocal desktop fits
Deco BE634 × 2.5G1 × 2.5GYes
Orbi 7701 × 2.5G WAN + 3 × 2.5G LAN1 × 2.5GYes
Deco X553 × 1GNoneNeeds a switch
Deco BE232 × 2.5GNot enough branch portsNeeds a switch

What that meansBE63 directly fits all four connections and leaves more room-device sockets than Orbi 770. X55 works when the local gateway device is not needed.

Keep in mindA switch can make other kits suitable, but its cost, port speeds and power outlet then belong in the installation plan.

Check these before buying

  • Confirm that both satellite cables return to the main node location.
  • Count any NAS, desktop or other device that must connect beside the gateway.
  • In Deco router mode, keep satellite wiring downstream of the main Deco rather than connecting satellites upstream beside the modem.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • This article deliberately models a direct star with no external switch or daisy chain.
  • It does not assume all products provide the same router features in access point mode.
