Main trade-off
Sony WH-1000XM6
USB-C is for charging, not digital audio.
Head-to-head
Choose Sony WH-1000XM6 if an analog cable must work with a completely flat battery. Choose Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2 if you want digital USB-C audio and listening while charging. Their standard ANC playback claims are both 30 hours.
Before you choose
Sony wins the powered-off analog requirement. Bose wins the digital USB requirement.
What this is based on
Sony: passive analog yes, USB audio no. Bose Ultra 2: passive analog no, USB audio yes.
Main trade-off
USB-C is for charging, not digital audio.
Main trade-off
Analog playback still needs power, unlike standard QuietComfort models.

Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2 solve different cable needs. Compare USB playback, flat-battery fallback, weight and battery modes.
Before you choose
Bose is the relevant option when your employer permits a wired USB headset but disables Bluetooth. Check its installed firmware and your actual meeting app before relying on it for work. Sony’s analog lead carries listening audio but its phone-call instructions use the phone microphone, so that lead cannot substitute for a verified USB conference setup. Sony remains suitable when the approved route is Bluetooth.
Bose firmware 8.2.20 introduced PC USB calls with specific VoIP compatibility limits. Sony documents no USB audio and uses the source phone microphone on analog calls.
Bose documents a button sequence to leave USB audio for a previously connected Bluetooth device, then return to USB. That can suit a desk with computer music and separate phone calls, provided you are happy switching sources yourself. Sony disables Bluetooth when its analog cable is inserted. Choose Bose for the documented USB-to-phone switching routine, or keep Sony wireless if reaching the phone is the priority.
The Bose guide describes pressing the Bluetooth/Power button to select Bluetooth and pressing again for USB audio. It does not promise simultaneous mixing or automatic interruption of USB by every incoming call.
Winner by situation
Bose provides a direct USB audio path. Sony needs an analog output, adapter or Bluetooth instead.
Sony keeps passive analog available. A Bose audio cable cannot by itself solve an empty battery.
Both specify up to 30 hours in the compared ANC mode.
Bose publishes a separate 23-hour Immersive Audio figure. Do not borrow the ordinary 30-hour claim for that setting.
What matters in practice
Sony wins the powered-off analog requirement. Bose wins the digital USB requirement.
Sony: passive analog yes, USB audio no. Bose Ultra 2: passive analog no, USB audio yes.
Its 23-hour Immersive Audio claim is seven hours below its 30-hour standard claim.
30 − 23 = 7 hours. 7 ÷ 30 × 100 = 23.3% lower rated duration.
The published gap is 10 g, not a large change in headset class.
(264 − 254) ÷ 264 × 100 = 3.8%.
Check your own setup
Start with the way you listen. USB charging is not the same as USB audio, and some headphones need power even with a cable. These choices are examples until you apply yours.
Bluetooth listening.
Bluetooth listening.
Battery figures are manufacturer claims for the stated mode, not measured travel time. Volume, codec, calls and battery age change runtime. Closed earcups can still leak sound. Weight alone does not predict comfort. USB audio needs a compatible source and cable. This check does not assess sound quality, microphone quality or amplifier power.

Sony, WH-1000XM6
A folding travel pair with a cable backup when the battery runs out. Choose it for a smaller packed shape than the XM5, not for a longer advertised battery life.

Bose, QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)
Choose Ultra 2 over the original Ultra for USB-C listening and the longer 30-hour Quiet-mode claim. Choose QuietComfort 2 instead if a completely flat battery must not stop analog playback.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | Sony WH-1000XM6 | Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| ANC playback claim | Up to 30 hours | Up to 30 hours | The standard advertised limit is tied. |
| Digital USB audio | No | Yes | Bose can take audio directly from a compatible USB source. |
| Analog with a flat battery | Yes | No | Bose’s analog cable still needs headphone power. |
| Weight | 254 g | 264 g | Sony is 10 g lighter by the published figures. |
| Special spatial-mode runtime | Do not substitute ANC-off hours | Up to 23 hours with Immersive Audio | Bose’s 30-hour number does not apply to Immersive Audio. |
| Inward folding | Yes | Yes | Both offer an inward-folding travel shape. |
| Phone and laptop multipoint | Yes | Yes | Neither requires an all-Apple setup for ordinary two-device switching. |
What you give up
What matters in practice
USB-C charging, USB audio and passive analog are separate capabilities. Sony covers the dead-battery airplane scenario. Bose covers a direct USB-C desk connection. Picking on the socket shape alone is likely to produce the wrong purchase.
The shared ANC figure removes battery capacity as an obvious tie-breaker. Bose’s Immersive Audio mode changes that calculation, so choose the mode you expect to use before comparing the numbers.
A manufacturer’s noise-canceling or spatial-audio branding is not a measurement of how these will sound on your head. With the connection needs settled, the useful next checks are fit, seller terms and the actual offer.
