Main trade-off
Sony WH-1000XM6
USB-C is for charging, not digital audio.
Head-to-head
Choose WH-1000XM6 if an inward-folding frame will make daily packing easier. Choose WH-1000XM5 if it fits your bag and its offer is better. Both have the same 30-hour ANC claim and passive analog backup.
Before you choose
The published ANC and ANC-off playback limits do not change between generations.
What this is based on
30 − 30 = 0 hours with ANC. 40 − 40 = 0 hours without ANC. These are manufacturer maxima, not test results.
Main trade-off
USB-C is for charging, not digital audio.
Main trade-off
The flat-folding design takes more bag space than an inward-folding pair.

Compare Sony WH-1000XM6 and WH-1000XM5 by packed shape, weight, battery modes and cable fallback. See what changes and what stays the same.
Before you choose
If the battery warning arrives during a Bluetooth meeting, XM6 allows you to connect power and keep using the headset. XM5 shuts down when charging starts, so it needs a break or another audio device. Choose XM6 if that interruption would be costly. Do not expect a desk charging session with XM6 in use to prepare a completely full battery for the trip home.
Sony limits charging during XM6 use to approximately 80 percent. XM5 explicitly disables powered operation while charging. These operating rules are separate from the equal published playback-hour claims.
For a phone call while using the supplied analog lead, both Sonys rely on the phone microphone. Leaving the phone in a bag can therefore break the conversation even though you hear the caller. Neither generation solves that job by upgrading the headphone microphones. Choose either for wired listening, but use Bluetooth or a separately verified microphone route when you need hands-free speaking.
Both manuals disable Bluetooth during analog use and tell you to speak into the phone. Sony also instructs users to disable Speak-to-Chat for these wired calls.
Winner by situation
XM6 adds the inward-folding option. Check the case against your actual bag rather than assuming every folding case is smaller.
Both carry the same 30-hour ANC and 40-hour ANC-off claims. Runtime alone is not a reason to replace an XM5.
Both have passive analog operation, though noise cancellation needs power.
Neither provides digital USB playback. A headphone jack or suitable adapter is needed instead.
What matters in practice
The published ANC and ANC-off playback limits do not change between generations.
30 − 30 = 0 hours with ANC. 40 − 40 = 0 hours without ANC. These are manufacturer maxima, not test results.
XM6 is 4 g heavier, a 1.6% increase over XM5. Fit, padding and pressure remain separate questions.
(254 − 250) ÷ 250 × 100 = 1.6%.
Both pass a dead-battery analog requirement and both fail a digital USB requirement.
Sony lists passive operation and a stereo mini jack for both. USB is specified as the charging connection.
Check your own setup
Start with the way you listen. USB charging is not the same as USB audio, and some headphones need power even with a cable. These choices are examples until you apply yours.
Bluetooth listening.
Bluetooth listening.
Battery figures are manufacturer claims for the stated mode, not measured travel time. Volume, codec, calls and battery age change runtime. Closed earcups can still leak sound. Weight alone does not predict comfort. USB audio needs a compatible source and cable. This check does not assess sound quality, microphone quality or amplifier power.

Sony, WH-1000XM6
A folding travel pair with a cable backup when the battery runs out. Choose it for a smaller packed shape than the XM5, not for a longer advertised battery life.

Sony, WH-1000XM5
A 250 g pair for switching between a phone and laptop, with analog listening if you forget to charge. The earcups turn flat but the headband does not fold inward.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | Sony WH-1000XM6 | Sony WH-1000XM5 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Packed shape | Folds inward | Earcups turn flat | The hinge is the clearest practical difference for a crowded bag. |
| Weight | 254 g | 250 g | The newer model adds 4 g. This small difference does not establish a comfort winner. |
| ANC playback claim | Up to 30 hours | Up to 30 hours | There is no advertised runtime gain in this mode. |
| ANC-off playback claim | Up to 40 hours | Up to 40 hours | Turning ANC off changes runtime, not the comparison result. |
| Powered-off analog | Supported | Supported | Both can keep playing from a headphone jack after battery depletion. |
| Digital USB audio | Not supported | Not supported | A USB-C port on either model is not a direct computer-audio input. |
| Bluetooth codecs | SBC, AAC, LDAC, LC3 | SBC, AAC, LDAC | LC3 is useful only if your transmitting device supports the required LE Audio connection. |
What you give up
What matters in practice
An XM5 owner who already has room for the case gets little practical benefit from a folding hinge alone. For someone moving between trains, work and a small daypack, opening and closing the XM6 several times a day is a more concrete reason to choose it.
Thirty hours of ANC-rated playback is shared. The comparison should turn on the frame, controls and current offer, not a suggestion that the newer model automatically lasts longer. Calls, codecs and volume can reduce both manufacturer figures.
An LC3 logo cannot make an incompatible laptop or phone transmit LC3. Both models retain SBC, AAC and LDAC. If you need a predictable cable connection at a desk, use analog or choose another pair with confirmed USB audio.
