Main trade-off
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones
The analog cable still requires the headphones to be powered on.
Head-to-head
Choose Ultra 2 if you want direct USB-C audio or more time between charges. Choose the original Ultra if Bluetooth and powered analog meet your needs and its exact-model offer is better. Neither has battery-free analog playback.
Before you choose
Ultra 2 adds 25% to the standard rating and 27.8% to the Immersive Audio rating.
What this is based on
(30 − 24) ÷ 24 = 25%. (23 − 18) ÷ 18 = 27.8%.
Main trade-off
The analog cable still requires the headphones to be powered on.
Main trade-off
Analog playback still needs power, unlike standard QuietComfort models.

Compare Bose QuietComfort Ultra generations by USB audio, standard and Immersive battery claims, weight and the powered-analog limitation both retain.
Before you choose
Ultra 2 is the model to investigate for a computer that requires wired USB calls. Its launch firmware and current calling capability are different states, so an unopened box alone does not settle compatibility. Confirm the installed version and meeting app before switching your work setup. The original Ultra does not offer USB audio, so retaining it means keeping another approved microphone and audio route for that laptop.
Bose lists PC USB voice support from firmware 8.2.20 and warns that communication-app support varies. September 2026 firmware improves USB calling compatibility, without a universal application guarantee.
If the intended job is mixing game sound and voice chat from a PC, Ultra 2’s documented firmware feature is worth checking against the computer and app. If the purchase is for a gaming console, that feature gives no basis for choosing it. Keep the original for an already working setup or broaden the shortlist for a console headset whose audio and microphone route is explicitly supported.
Bose’s 10.12.12 release notes limit USB game/chat balance to compatible PCs and mobile devices and explicitly exclude gaming consoles. They do not document a console workaround.
Winner by situation
Only the second generation supports digital USB playback.
Use 18 versus 23 hours, not the ordinary 24 and 30 numbers.
The older model remains relevant if its missing USB path and shorter stated runtime do not affect your routine.
Both require power for analog listening. Standard QuietComfort models are the better place to look.
What matters in practice
Ultra 2 adds 25% to the standard rating and 27.8% to the Immersive Audio rating.
(30 − 24) ÷ 24 = 25%. (23 − 18) ÷ 18 = 27.8%.
The new digital listening path does not remove the power requirement for the analog path.
Ultra 2 supports USB audio. Both generations require power for analog audio.
Ultra 2 is approximately 10 g heavier by rounded published figures.
(264 − 254) ÷ 254 × 100 = 3.9%.
Check your own setup
Start with the way you listen. USB charging is not the same as USB audio, and some headphones need power even with a cable. These choices are examples until you apply yours.
Bluetooth listening.
Bluetooth listening.
Battery figures are manufacturer claims for the stated mode, not measured travel time. Volume, codec, calls and battery age change runtime. Closed earcups can still leak sound. Weight alone does not predict comfort. USB audio needs a compatible source and cable. This check does not assess sound quality, microphone quality or amplifier power.

Bose, QuietComfort Ultra Headphones
A folding first-generation Ultra with CustomTune and head-tracked Immersive Audio. It is worth comparing against Ultra 2 by the actual offer, but it lacks the newer model’s USB audio.

Bose, QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)
Choose Ultra 2 over the original Ultra for USB-C listening and the longer 30-hour Quiet-mode claim. Choose QuietComfort 2 instead if a completely flat battery must not stop analog playback.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones | Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard playback claim | Up to 24 hours | Up to 30 hours | Ultra 2 adds six rated hours. |
| Immersive Audio claim | Up to 18 hours | Up to 23 hours | The improvement is five hours in this mode. |
| USB audio | Not supported | Supported | The newer USB port accepts digital sound, not only charge. |
| Playback while charging | Check first-generation operating restrictions | Supported | Ultra 2 is the straightforward choice for listening while plugged into USB power. |
| Approximate weight | 254 g | 264 g | The new generation adds around 10 g. |
| Battery-free analog | No | No | A cable alone does not keep either playing after depletion. |
| Multipoint | Supported with current software | Supported | Update the original Ultra before assuming it cannot switch between two devices. |
What you give up
What matters in practice
The first Ultra’s USB-C socket is not an audio input. Ultra 2 fixes that limitation and supports listening while charging. If you use the headphones with a laptop every day, this affects the routine more directly than another processing feature you may rarely use.
A 30-versus-18 comparison would unfairly mix Ultra 2’s standard mode with the original’s Immersive Audio mode. Compare 30 against 24 or 23 against 18. Both show an improvement, without exaggerating it.
Bose added multipoint to the first Ultra through an update. A dated review saying that it is single-device only is not a reliable account of the current product. Install current firmware before judging that behavior.
