Main trade-off
Sony WH-1000XM4C
AAC ambient listening is rated at 19 hours, below its 27-hour ANC figure. A day spent listening for interruptions has a different battery budget.
Head-to-head
Choose WH-1000XM4C if its selected offer saves enough and your priorities are folding storage and battery-free analog listening. XM6 shares both. Choose WH-1000XM6 if you change glasses or wearing conditions often, want automatic ANC adjustment, or need its longer published runtime. XM6 also explicitly supports use while charging. That is verified for XM6, not established for XM4C. Neither passive cable mode keeps ANC running with an empty battery.
Before you choose
At a shared desk you might leave ambient listening on to hear a partner, then switch to ANC on the train. Sony lists 19 hours for XM4C in AAC ambient mode and 30 for XM6. In AAC ANC mode, the figures are 27 and 30. The published gap is therefore 11 hours for one routine and three for the other. If ambient listening fills most of your day and you often forget the charger, that difference deserves more weight. These are mode-specific claims, not our measured runtimes. Ambient listening cannot guarantee that a child, alarm or warning will be heard.
What this is based on
30 minus 19 equals 11 hours, while 30 minus 27 equals three. Same named codec and mode only. No mixed-day runtime or safety guarantee.
Main trade-off
AAC ambient listening is rated at 19 hours, below its 27-hour ANC figure. A day spent listening for interruptions has a different battery budget.
Main trade-off
The higher tier does not buy an exclusive folding frame or passive fallback. Automatic ANC can fluctuate, and personal fit still needs a trial.

Compare Sony XM4C and XM6 for glasses, interrupted work and travel. Both fold and work through analog without power. See which daily differences justify more.
The current XM4C and XM6 offer the same fundamental folding ANC travel format. A buyer choosing between them needs to know which premium features change a routine, and which useful fallbacks are already shared.
Winner by situation
Both provide them. Compare the offer saving rather than paying for a shared feature.
XM6 automates ANC optimization. Neither has a verified glasses-comfort advantage.
The published mode-specific limits are 19 and 30 hours.
Sony explicitly documents it for XM6. XM4C remains unconfirmed rather than marked absent.
Both direct calls to the source microphone in that wired mode.

A crowded bag and a missed charge are good reasons to avoid the wrong headphones. They are weaker reasons to pay more for XM6 because XM4C also folds inward and plays through its analog lead with the power off. If you mostly charge at home and only need that emergency cable route, check the actual saving first. XM6 becomes easier to justify when its automatic adjustment or documented charging during use matters on ordinary days. Carry the right source adapter with either pair. No adapter means the passive feature may be useless when you need it.
Shared failure-state and storage features used to reject an unnecessary upgrade. Offer saving is conditional and no case-volume ranking is invented.
Someone who alternates between glasses at a monitor and contacts away from the desk has a recurring fit change. XM4C instructs the owner to rerun its optimizer after changes such as glasses. XM6 adjusts automatically. That removes a small job each time, which can justify the upgrade even if you rarely use its extra battery margin. It does not establish better comfort against frames. Sony also warns that the automatic process may make the ANC effect fluctuate, so a person bothered by changing pressure or sound should try the pair before keeping it.
Documented adjustment behavior crossed with a repeated wearing change. No subjective pressure, comfort or measured attenuation result.
Check your own setup
Start with the way you listen. USB charging is not the same as USB audio, and some headphones need power even with a cable. These choices are examples until you apply yours.
Bluetooth listening.
Bluetooth listening.
Battery figures are manufacturer claims for the stated mode, not measured travel time. Volume, codec, calls and battery age change runtime. Closed earcups can still leak sound. Weight alone does not predict comfort. USB audio needs a compatible source and cable. This check does not assess sound quality, microphone quality or amplifier power.

Sony, WH-1000XM4C
A folding frame and battery-free analog are the essentials, and the selected XM4C offer gives you a worthwhile saving.

Sony, WH-1000XM6
You change wearing conditions often and want automatic ANC adjustment. This does not establish a comfort or isolation winner.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | Sony WH-1000XM4C | Sony WH-1000XM6 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Folding and passive fallback | Inward fold and unpowered analog playback | Inward fold and unpowered analog playback | These two travel safeguards do not require choosing XM6. Neither supplies ANC with a flat battery. |
| Changing glasses or fit | Manual NC Optimizer procedure | Auto NC Optimizer follows wearing conditions | XM6 removes a repeated setup step without proving more comfortable pressure against glasses. |
| AAC with ANC | Up to 27 hours | Up to 30 hours | The claimed difference in this named mode is three hours. These are manufacturer limits. |
| AAC ambient listening | Up to 19 hours | Up to 30 hours | The stated gap becomes 11 hours when this is the mode you leave on. |
| LDAC with ANC | Up to 20 hours | Up to 26 hours | Choosing LDAC changes the planning figure on both models. |
| Charging during use | Not established in the reviewed instructions | Explicitly supported, charging stops at roughly 80% during use | XM6 supplies a documented route. Missing XM4C guidance is not proof that the feature is absent. |
| Microphone through the supplied analog cable | Use the source phone microphone | Use the source phone microphone | Both need a separate microphone plan for a wired meeting with the laptop out of reach. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Sony WH-1000XM4C. Folding and passive analog do not require XM6.
Choose Sony WH-1000XM6. Those are documented reasons to consider XM6 rather than buying on the newer number.
What matters in practice
You want to spend less without losing a dependable travel pair. XM4C already folds and works through an analog cable with no battery. XM6 earns a closer look when automatic fit adjustment or longer mode-specific endurance solves a daily inconvenience.
