Main trade-off
Sony WH-1000XM4C
ANC setup includes a manual optimizer step when wearing conditions change. With LDAC and ANC, the rating is 20 hours rather than the 27-hour headline.
Head-to-head
Choose WH-1000XM4C when an inward-folding frame is the priority in a crowded bag. Choose WH-1000XM5 for automatic adjustment to wearing conditions and longer published runtime in the same named codecs. Both keep playing through their analog cable with power off, without ANC. We have not measured a noise-cancellation or comfort winner.
Before you choose
If you wear glasses at a shared desk and remove them on the train, Sony tells XM4C owners to rerun NC Optimizer after that change. XM5 adjusts automatically. That favors XM5 when you dislike repeating setup, even though XM4C is easier to fold into a bag. Neither instruction proves which earcup feels better against your frames. A tight seal and comfortable pressure still need a fit check.
What this is based on
Manufacturer fit-adjustment procedures crossed with switching between glasses and contacts. No measured isolation or comfort difference is inferred.

Main trade-off
The earcups turn flat but do not fold inward. Sony also warns that automatic ANC adjustment can cause noticeable fluctuations.

Sony WH-1000XM4C vs XM5 for a full commuter bag, glasses and long listening days. Compare the folding frame, ANC setup and codec-specific battery limits.
The refreshed XM4C sits beside the still-sold XM5, so a higher model number does not settle this same-brand ANC purchase. Both offer multipoint and an unpowered analog fallback. Packing and everyday ANC setup separate them.
Winner by situation
XM4C folds inward. XM5 turns flat. Case dimensions still need checking.
XM5 adapts automatically. XM4C has a manual optimizer procedure.
Sony rates AAC ambient listening at 19 versus 30 hours. These are claims, not our measurements.
Both allow passive playback without ANC. The source still needs a compatible headphone output.
No matched isolation test supports a winner here.

At home you may use ambient mode so a partner can speak to you, then switch to ANC for a commute. XM4C’s AAC rating falls from 27 hours with ANC to 19 with ambient listening. XM5 lists 30 for either AAC mode. That makes XM5’s stated endurance more useful for this mixed routine than the three-hour headline gap suggests. These are manufacturer limits, not a prediction of your daily runtime. Ambient mode is also no substitute for supervising children or hearing safety warnings.
Mode matching, rather than adding incompatible maximum claims. No guaranteed audible-alert performance.
XM4C’s inward fold helps the packing problem. It does not buy a unique emergency listening mode because XM5 also works through analog with power off. If your commute involves a phone without a headphone jack, keep the correct adapter with the cable or neither passive fallback will help. The difference worth paying for is the folding shape versus automatic ANC setup and the longer published runtime, rather than buying a second feature both already share.
Shared passive playback crossed with source-connector availability and storage form. Adapter compatibility must be checked separately.
Check your own setup
Start with the way you listen. USB charging is not the same as USB audio, and some headphones need power even with a cable. These choices are examples until you apply yours.
Bluetooth listening.

Battery figures are manufacturer claims for the stated mode, not measured travel time. Volume, codec, calls and battery age change runtime. Closed earcups can still leak sound. Weight alone does not predict comfort. USB audio needs a compatible source and cable. This check does not assess sound quality, microphone quality or amplifier power.

Sony, WH-1000XM4C
Your bag is crowded and you want the earcups to fold inward. The included case still needs its own space.

Sony, WH-1000XM5
You change wearing conditions during the day and want Auto NC Optimizer to adjust without a manual calibration step.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | Sony WH-1000XM4C | Sony WH-1000XM5 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Packing | Inward-folding frame with included case | Earcups turn flat, no inward headband fold | A full commuter bag makes the folding mechanism useful even when the headphones weigh almost the same. |
| Changing glasses or fit | Run NC Optimizer again after wearing conditions change | Auto NC Optimizer adjusts to wearing conditions and environment | XM5 removes a setup step. This is not a measured ANC or comfort ranking. |
| AAC playback with ANC | Up to 27 hours | Up to 30 hours | Compare the same named codec before interpreting the battery headline. Actual conditions still differ. |
| LDAC playback with ANC | Up to 20 hours | Up to 26 hours | Choosing LDAC uses a different endurance budget on both models. |
| Ambient mode with AAC | Up to 19 hours | Up to 30 hours | Someone using ambient listening throughout the day should not budget from XM4C’s ANC figure. |
| Battery-free analog | Playback with power off, without ANC | Playback with power off, without ANC | Both provide a listening fallback. An empty battery still removes powered noise cancellation. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Sony WH-1000XM4C. XM4C provides the folding mechanism XM5 lacks.
Choose Sony WH-1000XM5. XM5 wins on those documented operating differences, with fit still personal.
What matters in practice
You want a pair that fits around a laptop and lunch, but also want less setup when moving between glasses, contacts and different rooms. XM4C folds inward. XM5 adjusts its noise cancellation automatically.
