Main trade-off
Denon AVR-S980H
The 6.6-inch body is taller and lacks full-range main-channel pre-outs.
Head-to-head
Choose the original CINEMA 70s for low furniture or a suitable existing multichannel amplifier. Choose S980H for two same-source displays or a shallower shelf with enough height. With antennas horizontal, Marantz is 2.3 inches lower but 1.7 inches deeper. Neither is a four-height receiver, and both need ventilation beyond the listed body dimensions.
Before you choose
A low sideboard under the family TV makes CINEMA 70s look like the obvious answer. Measure the back as well. With antennas horizontal, it saves 2.3 inches in height but needs 1.7 inches more depth than S980H. That can move the cable bends into the back panel or force the unit forward. Denon may fit a shallow, taller shelf better. These are body measurements, so neither should be squeezed into an opening of exactly that size. Leave the manufacturer-required cooling space and enough room to service the cables.
What this is based on
Horizontal-antenna dimensions are 17.1 W by 13.4 D by 6.6 H inches for S980H and 17.4 W by 15.1 D by 4.3 H for CINEMA 70s. Differences are 2.3 inches in height and 1.7 in depth. No thermal-clearance calculation or closed-cabinet approval is inferred.
Main trade-off
The 6.6-inch body is taller and lacks full-range main-channel pre-outs.
Main trade-off
Its slim body is deeper, and its single HDMI output cannot directly serve a TV and projector together.

Compare S980H and the original CINEMA 70s for low furniture, shallow shelves, a TV plus projector and reusing an amplifier without losing Atmos.
Both serve a seven-channel living-room theater with HEOS and three high-refresh HDMI inputs. Marantz’s slim body and full pre-outs appeal to owners of low furniture or existing amplifiers. Denon instead gives a TV and projector their own same-source monitor connections.
Winner by situation
CINEMA 70s has the lower body. Check installation clearance separately.
S980H saves 1.7 inches of body depth with horizontal antennas.
Only Marantz provides the full-range main pre-out bank in this pair.
Denon has two monitor outputs. They do not carry different programs.

If you own a suitable multichannel power amplifier, CINEMA 70s can keep it in service through its full main-channel pre-outs. S980H’s subwoofer outputs cannot perform that job. That matters when the household wants to preserve an installed speaker system while replacing the HDMI and streaming control unit. Compare the whole replacement plan rather than receiver prices alone. Marantz still processes only seven main channels, so the existing amplifier cannot make a future four-height layout possible.
CINEMA 70s provides full 7.2 pre-outs and seven main processing channels. S980H provides subwoofer pre-outs only. Amplifier reuse is conditional on compatible input levels, connections, speakers and installation. No assumed dollar saving or audible improvement.
A TV and projector used at different times favor S980H because both can stay connected to the same source. Movie sound with two height speakers while another person listens in the kitchen favors CINEMA 70s if a separate amplifier powers that room. Its external Zone 2 route preserves the main-room channels. Denon’s powered Zone 2 assignment uses two of them. These are two different ways of sharing the system, and a second HDMI output cannot substitute for a second-room audio output.
S980H has two same-source monitor outputs and five main channels when using powered Zone 2. CINEMA 70s has one monitor output and documented seven-main-channel layouts alongside Zone 2 pre-outs. Zone source compatibility and an external amplifier remain required.
Check a documented speaker layout against HDMI sources and external-amplifier plans.
Supports your setup
Supports 5.1.2 using the receiver's own amplifiers. Connects 3 HDMI devices, including 1 at 4K/120Hz.

A powered subwoofer is separate from the speaker-channel count. This checks one main room. Zone 2, bi-amping and unusual speaker assignments need another manual check. Allow ventilation space and confirm HDMI settings, cables and speaker impedance before installing.

Denon, 301130-01-00-101
You need a TV and projector connected directly to the same source, with enough cabinet height for S980H.

Marantz, CINEMA 70s
The lower body helps your furniture layout, with room behind and above it for cables and cooling.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | Denon AVR-S980H | Marantz CINEMA 70s | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Height, antennas horizontal | 6.6 inches | 4.3 inches | Marantz saves 2.3 inches of body height before cooling clearance. |
| Depth, antennas horizontal | 13.4 inches | 15.1 inches | Denon needs 1.7 inches less body depth before HDMI cable bends. |
| Direct display outputs | Two same-source HDMI outputs | One HDMI output | A TV/projector arrangement favors Denon unless another suitable switching route already exists. |
| Main-channel amplifier outputs | No full-range main pre-outs | Full 7.2 pre-out bank | Marantz can reuse suitable external main-channel amplification. |
| Main processing limit | Seven channels | Seven channels | Neither supports five bed-level plus four height channels. |
| Heights and an externally powered second room | No equivalent Zone 2 line-out route | Seven-channel main layouts plus Zone 2 pre-outs | Marantz can preserve heights when another amplifier powers the second room. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Denon AVR-S980H. S980H has two same-source outputs and a 13.4-inch horizontal-antenna depth.
Choose Marantz CINEMA 70s. Original CINEMA 70s is lower and has full 7.2 pre-outs. Leave cooling room.
Choose neither. Both stop at seven main processing channels.
What matters in practice
You want to keep the furniture and speakers you already own, but a slim receiver can solve height while creating a depth or display-connection problem.
