Best for this need

Which receiver works with the power amplifier you already own?

Our pick

Marantz CINEMA 50

Marantz CINEMA 50

The original Marantz CINEMA 50 is a strong starting point for multichannel external amplification because it exposes eleven main channels and four independent sub outputs. Choose RZ30 for a finished nine-channel Dirac system, CINEMA 70s for a low-profile seven-channel processor, or X2900H when only the front stereo pair needs an external amp.

Why it fits this need

  • Number of full-range main pre-outs
  • Number of processing channels
Main trade-off
7.1.4 requires an external stereo power amplifier.
Choose Onkyo TX-RZ30 instead when
Nine processing channels are enough and Dirac Room Correction should be included.
More reasons behind this pick
  • Exact external-amplifier assignment
  • Speaker and amplifier compatibility

Match a stereo or multichannel power amplifier to the receiver's full-range pre-outs, supported speaker layout and processing ceiling.

What matters in practice

How to choose for this need

Match the amp to full-range main pre-outs. Zone outputs and subwoofer outputs do not replace missing center, surround or height pre-outs.

01

Count the channels you need to feed

A stereo power amp can use front left and right pre-outs, which X2900H and NR1510 supply. A five- or seven-channel amp needs the corresponding center and surround outputs, which the CINEMA models provide in different counts. Do not mistake Zone 2 line outputs for missing main-channel pre-outs, because their routing and purpose differ.

02

Processing sets the layout ceiling

RZ30 exposes nine main channels but cannot process 7.1.4. CINEMA 70s exposes seven and remains limited to seven main channels. CINEMA 50 processes eleven and documents how an external stereo amp completes 7.1.4 alongside its nine internal amplifiers. An external amp can replace amplification or complete an available processing layout, but it cannot create a layout the receiver cannot process.

03

Treat the two-box system as one installation

Check amplifier input requirements, speaker impedance, gain and power-control behavior against both manuals. Allow shelf space and ventilation for both components. A low-profile receiver can be useful when amplification is elsewhere, although it does not remove the need to cool either box. Speaker-level outputs should never be substituted for line-level pre-outs without appropriate equipment.

Check these before buying

  • List the exact front, center, surround and height pre-outs needed.
  • Check gain, input sensitivity and safe connection instructions for the power amp.
  • Verify the documented amp assignment before wiring an expanded layout.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • This guide does not certify electrical compatibility for an unspecified amplifier or speaker load.

Our pick and alternatives

01
Marantz CINEMA 50

Marantz, CINEMA 50

CINEMA 50

Nine amplifiers, eleven-channel processing and four independent sub outputs support a 5.1.4 system with room for 7.1.4 expansion. All six HDMI inputs support 4K120.

Winner whenFour-height Marantz rooms with an upgrade path

Decisive facts

  • 9 built-in amplifier channels and 11 main processing channels
  • 6 HDMI inputs, including 6 supporting 4K120 video

Trade-off

7.1.4 requires an external stereo power amplifier.

02
Onkyo TX-RZ30

Onkyo, TX-RZ30

TX-RZ30

A nine-channel receiver with full-range pre-outs and a full-bandwidth Dirac Live license. It suits a 5.1.4 system that may use external amplifiers without adding processing channels.

Choose instead whenNine processing channels are enough and Dirac Room Correction should be included.

Decisive facts

  • 9 built-in amplifier channels and 9 main processing channels
  • 6 HDMI inputs, including 6 supporting 4K120 video

Trade-off

External amplification does not lift its nine-channel processing ceiling.

03
Marantz CINEMA 70s

Marantz, CINEMA 70s

CINEMA 70s

The original slim CINEMA 70s combines seven amplifiers with full 7.2 pre-outs in a 4.3-inch-tall chassis. It can anchor a low-profile 5.1.2 room or feed a separate power amp.

Choose instead whenSeven processing channels and a 4.3-inch chassis suit the system.

Decisive facts

  • 7 built-in amplifier channels and 7 main processing channels
  • 6 HDMI inputs, including 3 supporting 4K120 video

Trade-off

The slim chassis still needs ventilation and cable space.

04
Denon AVR-X2900H

Denon, AVR-X2900H

AVR-X2900H

The 2026 seven-channel model adds front-channel pre-outs and an optional Dirac Live upgrade to a two-display system. Its main-room speaker ceiling remains 7.1 or 5.1.2.

Choose instead whenOnly front left and right need external amplification and the room remains 7.1 or 5.1.2.

Decisive facts

  • 7 built-in amplifier channels and 7 main processing channels
  • 6 HDMI inputs, including 3 supporting 4K120 video

Trade-off

Front-channel pre-outs cannot turn seven-channel processing into 7.1.4.
