Best tablets for an external monitor

Our pick

Apple iPad Air 11-inch M4 128 GB Wi-Fi

Apple iPad Air 11-inch M4 128 GB Wi-Fi

Choose Air M4 for a verified iPad workflow, or Galaxy Tab S11 for compatible Android work in external DeX. Pro M5 adds Thunderbolt. S10+ keeps external DeX with a larger built-in OLED page.

Air 11 supports extended-display app windows with current iPadOS in a 464 g tablet. Confirm the exact app, adapter, monitor and file workflow first. Pencil and keyboard are separate, and USB 3 is not Thunderbolt.

Why it fits this need

  • Separate app windows rather than video output alone
  • The exact application and returned file
Main trade-off
Pencil, keyboard and display adapter are separate. Required apps and their licensing still need checking.
Choose Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 SM-X730 128 GB Wi-Fi instead when
Android apps and external DeX fit the work, and an included non-charging S Pen matters. The 469 g tablet has OLED and 12 GB memory. Wall adapter and keyboard are separate. DeX does not add Windows software.
More reasons behind this pick
  • Peripheral protocol, power and cable compatibility

Find a tablet for separate app windows on a monitor. Compare Air M4, Galaxy Tab S11 and S10+, and Pro M5 without confusing mirroring with a full workspace.

What matters in practice

How to choose for this need

Verify the complete desk job before treating a tablet, keyboard and monitor as a replacement computer.

01

Ask what the second display must do

Showing a video to another person, mirroring the tablet and keeping independent work on two screens are different jobs. A16 and mini can output video, but are not on Apple’s current extended-window model list. M4 Air and M5 Pro are. Samsung FE and FE+ have on-device DeX but explicitly lack HDMI and Wireless DeX, while Lite also lacks standalone DeX. S11 and S10+ support the external route. A connector or desktop-mode name does not settle this.

02

Keep the smaller tablet if the desk already supplies the large screen

Air 11 and Air 13 share the documented memory and external-display class. The smaller Air saves 152 g before accessories. S11 saves 102 g against S10+ while retaining external DeX. A larger tablet earns its carrying cost when the larger built-in page is needed away from the monitor. A daily commute followed by detailed desk work can therefore favor the smaller model without giving up the required workspace.

03

Check an existing drive by protocol, not plug shape

Air M4 has USB 3, while Pro M5 has Thunderbolt 3 and USB4. A Thunderbolt-only drive is not established as compatible with Air just because both use USB-C connectors. Check the drive’s protocol, power, filesystem, cable and the app that needs the files. A USB-compatible drive can make Air sufficient. Published link ceilings do not predict real transfer time or editing performance.

04

Test the handoff to the next person

Open a representative work file, edit it, save it and send it through the normal route. Then open that result on the device the recipient uses. Check required fonts, macros, exports or forms rather than assuming mobile and desktop apps have identical features. Confirm workplace permission for the device and storage service. The monitor only changes the workspace. It does not grant software rights or approval to handle a particular file.

05

Price the complete desk and the kit that leaves it

Include the right monitor cable or adapter, charging arrangement, keyboard and pointing device. Air’s US box includes a 20W adapter but no Pencil. S11 includes S Pen but no wall adapter. Pro’s included 20W adapter does not reproduce its higher-power fast-charge test conditions. If the desk equipment stays home, count only the accessories that actually travel when comparing carried weight.

Check these before buying

  • Confirm independent-window support on the exact model.
  • Test the actual app and returned file.
  • Check drive and display protocols.
  • Verify charging while peripherals are connected.
  • Confirm software license and workplace policy.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • No universal laptop-replacement claim.
  • No measured transfer speed, runtime or app performance.
  • Adapters and operating-system requirements can change.

Our pick and alternatives

01
Apple iPad Air 11-inch M4 128 GB Wi-Fi

Apple, MH304LL/A

Apple iPad Air 11-inch M4 128 GB Wi-Fi

A practical iPad upgrade for notes in a bag and separate app windows on a monitor at home. Pencil Pro avoids the A16’s pressure-pen adapter routine, though the pen remains a separate purchase. The selected Air already has 12 GB memory. Moving to the base M5 Pro buys a different screen and port, not an automatic memory increase.

Winner whenAir 11 supports extended-display app windows with current iPadOS in a 464 g tablet. Confirm the exact app, adapter, monitor and file workflow first. Pencil and keyboard are separate, and USB 3 is not Thunderbolt.

Decisive facts

  • Space Gray MH304LL/A, 128 GB Wi-Fi, M4 with 12 GB memory. 464 g, 247.6 by 178.5 by 6.1 mm.
  • 10.86-inch rectangular laminated display, 2360 by 1640 at 264 ppi, 500 nits.

Trade-off

Pencil, keyboard and display adapter are separate. Required apps and their licensing still need checking.

02
Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 SM-X730 128 GB Wi-Fi

Samsung, SM-X730NZANXAR

Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 SM-X730 128 GB Wi-Fi

A compact Android option for handwriting on the move and external DeX at a desk. Its included S Pen removes a separate pen purchase, while the 469 g tablet is lighter than the smaller-screen S10 FE. Check the exact Android apps and monitor connection first. DeX changes the workspace, but it does not install Windows or macOS software.

Choose instead whenAndroid apps and external DeX fit the work, and an included non-charging S Pen matters. The 469 g tablet has OLED and 12 GB memory. Wall adapter and keyboard are separate. DeX does not add Windows software.

Decisive facts

  • Gray US SM-X730NZANXAR, 12 GB memory and 128 GB Wi-Fi, included S Pen.
  • 469 g, 253.8 by 165.3 by 5.5 mm. 11-inch 2560 by 1600 AMOLED display up to 120 Hz.

Trade-off

Wall adapter and keyboard are separate. S Pen lacks Bluetooth remote Air actions.

03
Apple iPad Pro 11-inch M5 256 GB Wi-Fi

Apple, MDWK4LL/A

Apple iPad Pro 11-inch M5 256 GB Wi-Fi

The small Pro earns its place when its OLED screen or Thunderbolt connection solves a real part of the work. It is 20 g lighter than Air 11 before accessories and supports a 120 Hz display. The 256 GB offer has 12 GB memory and standard glass. Do not buy it expecting the 1 TB model’s extra memory or optional nano-texture surface.

Choose instead whenA verified Thunderbolt peripheral or the built-in OLED screen justifies the upgrade. Check drive power, filesystem, cable and app compatibility. The linked 256 GB Pro has 12 GB memory and standard glass, with Pencil separate.

Decisive facts

  • Space Black MDWK4LL/A, 256 GB Wi-Fi, M5. 444 g, 249.7 by 177.5 by 5.3 mm.
  • Tandem OLED with adaptive 10–120 Hz. Thunderbolt 3/USB4 up to 40 Gb/s, with compatible equipment.

Trade-off

Selected 256 GB model has standard glass, 12 GB memory and a 9-core CPU. Higher-storage specifications do not apply.

04
Samsung Galaxy Tab S10+ SM-X820 256 GB Wi-Fi

Samsung, SM-X820NZAAXAR

Samsung Galaxy Tab S10+ SM-X820 256 GB Wi-Fi

Still worth comparing when a larger Android OLED screen and external DeX matter more than the latest release. The selected 256 GB model gives you more internal storage than the 128 GB S11. Its older Bluetooth-capable S Pen can also handle supported remote actions, though those functions need charge. Check the remote actions you actually use before treating the newer pen as a complete upgrade.

Choose instead whenA larger 12.4-inch OLED screen must also work away from the monitor. The selected US 256 GB Wi-Fi model has 12 GB memory and an included pen. It is 102 g heavier than S11, and Bluetooth pen remote actions need charge and app support.

Decisive facts

  • Moonstone Gray SM-X820NZAAXAR, 12 GB memory and 256 GB Wi-Fi, included S Pen.
  • 571 g, 285.4 by 185.4 by 5.6 mm. 12.4-inch 2800 by 1752 AMOLED, up to 120 Hz.

Trade-off

571 g before keyboard and cover. Larger than S11 for daily carrying.
