Main trade-off
Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 8
Only one source can connect directly. A second console still needs a suitable TV input or another switching arrangement.
Head-to-head
Choose Bar 8 when one direct console connection solves a TV-port shortage and the TV input, HDMI mode and cables support your required 4K120/VRR signal. Choose Arc Ultra when you already own Sonos Ace, want TV Audio Swap and can connect your sources through the TV. Keep its WiFi enabled. Both require phone-app, account and internet setup plus open placement. Neither base package includes separate rears or an external subwoofer.
Before you choose
If connecting a soundbar would occupy the TV input your console needs, Bar 8 can put that console behind the bar and send video to the same TV port. This works only when that port and both cable runs support your required signal. If the TV already has enough suitable inputs, Arc Ultra can leave the console connected directly, so Sony’s extra socket does not establish better gaming.
What this is based on
Sony documents one direct source path and its HDMI settings. The useful outcome is avoiding a cable swap or another switch, not a claim of improved frame rate or lower delay.
Main trade-off
Only one source can connect directly. A second console still needs a suitable TV input or another switching arrangement.
Main trade-off
There is no direct console or player input. The TV must have enough suitable sockets and pass the required audio format.
Compare Sony Bar 8 and Sonos Arc Ultra for console routing, Sonos Ace TV listening and the setup checks that can change your choice.
A crowded TV connection panel and a late-night switch to headphones are separate problems. Bar 8 can help with the first. Arc Ultra can preserve the second if your headphones are Sonos Ace. Neither advantage matters automatically just because the bar is sold as a premium Atmos model.
Winner by situation
Sony can carry that source through the bar if the TV port, HDMI mode and cables support the full required signal. Complete app setup first. Arc Ultra has no source input to replace the occupied socket.
Arc Ultra is the supported TV Audio Swap host. Configure both products in the mobile app, keep bar WiFi enabled and route sources through a compatible TV. The headphones are not included.
The two headline connection benefits do not decide this case. Check placement, complete-system cost and the audio formats your TV actually passes. This is not a claim that the bars sound the same.
Check exact models. Sony lists SA-RS3S or SA-RS5 rears and SA-SW3 or SA-SW5 subs among its options. Arc Ultra supports compatible Sonos pairs such as Era 300 plus a Sonos Sub. App pairing and any required updates still apply.
Both documented setup paths require those things. Sony’s included remote is for routine operation after setup.
Both selected ASINs are standalone bars. Compare complete speaker bundles if all those pieces must arrive together.
What matters in practice

Arc Ultra lets an Ace owner move TV sound to the headphones for private listening after configuring the connection in the Sonos app. Keep WiFi on at the bar and the products updated. This is a TV-audio handover, not permission to stream any music playing on the bar to the original Ace. Bar 8 is not a supported TV Audio Swap host. Without Ace, or if your TV already provides the headphone routine you want, this reason loses its force.
Sonos lists Arc Ultra among the supported hosts. The Arc Ultra guide limits the original Ace handover to incoming HDMI or optical TV audio. That workflow is separate from grouped music and from installing surround speakers.
Sony’s supplied remote does not remove its smartphone, account and internet setup requirement. Arc Ultra also needs app setup before TV audio will play. If those prerequisites are unacceptable, neither fits. Measure open space as well: Sony’s shorter body is not permission to hide its top under a shelf, and Arc Ultra’s guide rules out an enclosed cabinet. A compatible HDMI socket is only one part of a workable installation.
These are operating requirements in the manuals, not optional convenience features. Wall-mount gaps differ from stand placement, so use the instructions for the installation you will actually make.
Try your real numbers
Measure the clear space in front of your TV. Count devices you want to plug into the soundbar, not devices already connected to the TV. The numbers below are examples until you enter yours.
43.31 inches wide and 2.52 inches high, with 1 separate HDMI source input. It leaves 4.7 inches of total spare width.
0 separate HDMI source inputs cannot take the 1 device you want to connect to the bar.
Use an open top surface, not an enclosed cubby. Detachable speakers are counted in the docked width. Allow extra depth for cables and the TV stand. This checks physical dimensions and port counts, not Dolby Atmos, 4K/120Hz passthrough or your TV’s audio-format support.
Sony, HT-A8000
HT-A8000 is a standalone bar with one direct HDMI source input and a separate eARC/ARC TV connection. It needs BRAVIA Connect setup. Compatible Sony rears and external subs are optional.
Sonos, Arc Ultra
The black Arc Ultra connects sources through the TV and supports Sonos Ace TV Audio Swap after setup. It needs the Sonos app and open placement. Headphones, rears and a Sub are optional.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 8 | Sonos Arc Ultra | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the console plugs in | One HDMI source input plus an eARC/ARC TV output | TV-facing HDMI eARC/ARC port, no source input | Sony can put one source behind the bar. Arc Ultra leaves source connections and video switching to the TV. |
| High-frame-rate video path | 4K120 and VRR with the matching HDMI mode, cables and TV input | Console video goes directly to the TV | Bar 8 cannot add a video feature missing from the TV. Arc Ultra does not limit a direct console-to-TV video path. |
| Atmos through the TV | eARC TV return, or a compatible source directly into the bar | Compatible ARC for Dolby Digital Plus Atmos, eARC for TrueHD Atmos | Check the format and TV passthrough. An HDMI label alone does not guarantee Atmos from every source. |
| Private TV listening with an existing Sonos Ace | Not a Sonos TV Audio Swap host | Supported after app setup, with bar WiFi enabled | Ace ownership changes this choice only if you actually want that TV-to-headphones handover. |
| Initial setup | BRAVIA Connect smartphone app, account and internet | Sonos iOS/Android app, account and internet | Neither meets a requirement for first-time setup without a phone, account or network. |
| Body and open placement | 1,100 by 64 by 113 mm, before feet | 1,178 by 75 by 110.6 mm | Sony is narrower, but a body measurement alone does not establish shelf or under-TV fit. |
| Optional surround equipment | Compatible Sony rears and subwoofers | Compatible Sonos pair and Sub | Check the exact speakers you own. Brand ownership alone does not establish a usable surround system. |
| Exact base package | HT-A8000 bar, remote, cables, feet and wall brackets | Black Arc Ultra bar, power and HDMI cables | Neither selected package includes separate rears, an external subwoofer or Ace headphones. Arc Ultra mounting hardware and its optical adapter are separate purchases. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 8. Choose Bar 8 after checking the TV port, Enhanced format (4K120, 8K) mode and cables. You still need BRAVIA Connect phone-app, account and internet setup plus open placement.
Choose Sonos Arc Ultra. Choose Arc Ultra if you can complete Sonos mobile-app setup, keep bar WiFi enabled and meet the TV-format and open-placement requirements.
Choose neither. Resolve those constraints before choosing either. An included remote or a body that fits on paper does not remove them.
Choose neither. These are bare-bar packages, so neither satisfies that brief without additional purchases.
What matters in practice
Start with the connections you need to preserve. If the TV already handles every source and you do not want Ace handover, these two advantages do not decide the purchase.
