Our pick
Start with Sonos Arc Ultra if a 46.38-inch bar fits and you want Wi-Fi music plus optional Sonos expansion later. Choose Bose Smart Soundbar for a much smaller cabinet, or JBL Bar 300 MK2 if you need a separate HDMI source input. All three standard packages work without a separate bass box.
Choose a single soundbar by cabinet space, HDMI connections and upgrade options. Compare real one-bar packages without hidden bass-box requirements.

What matters in practice
Choose the one-bar layout you can place correctly. A missing external subwoofer is a space decision, not a promise of identical bass performance.
Arc Ultra is 46.38 inches wide and 2.95 inches high. Bose Smart Soundbar is 27.34 inches wide and 2.21 inches high. JBL Bar 300 MK2 is 37 inches wide and 2 inches high. A wide stand does not guarantee enough vertical room below the screen, and upward-firing drivers should not be trapped beneath a shelf.
Arc Ultra and Bose Smart Soundbar have no separate HDMI source inputs. A console or disc player connects to the TV. JBL Bar 300 MK2 accepts one source directly, which can be useful on a crowded TV connection panel. Check the required video mode rather than assuming every HDMI input handles 4K at 120 Hz.
Sonos and Bose offer compatible branded subwoofers and surrounds. JBL Bar 300 MK2 can add two Cove M1 or two Cove P1 speakers with current firmware and JBL One setup. Klipsch Flexus Core 200 also provides an RCA output for a compatible conventional powered subwoofer. These are separate purchases. Compare the complete planned system and its floor space before choosing a bar for later expansion.
Worked example
Assume 40 inches of usable stand width and 2.5 inches beneath the screen.
FormulaWidth margin = usable stand width − soundbar width. Height margin = screen gap − cabinet height.
| Scenario | Width margin | Height margin | Cabinet fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonos Arc Ultra | −6.38 in | −0.45 in | Does not fit |
| Bose Smart Soundbar | 12.66 in | 0.29 in | Meets both measurements |
| JBL Bar 300 MK2 | 3.00 in | 0.50 in | Meets both measurements |
What that meansThe smaller Bose or low-profile JBL meets both cabinet constraints. Arc Ultra needs a different TV arrangement.
Keep in mindPositive margins do not replace the manufacturer’s placement and clearance instructions.
4 options
Sonos, Arc Ultra
Choose the Arc Ultra when you want a single bar now and the option to add a Sonos subwoofer and rear speakers later. It needs nearly 47 inches of cabinet width and uses your TV for source switching.
Winner whenA spacious TV stand and a surround system you can build in stages
There are no separate HDMI inputs for a console or disc player.
Bose, 892079-1100 (2024)
The 2024 Smart Soundbar combines a cabinet under 28 inches wide with upward-firing speakers and Wi-Fi music. It is easier to place than the Smart Ultra, although it leaves out the Ultra room-calibration system.
Choose instead whenThe TV stand is narrow or the screen sits low. Its cabinet is 27.34 inches wide and 2.21 inches high.
No ADAPTiQ room calibration.
JBL, Bar 300MK2
The Bar 300 MK2 keeps the low cabinet and Wi-Fi features of the 500 MK2 without a separate subwoofer. It also accepts one HDMI source directly, which is useful if the TV is already short of ports. Optional surrounds require current firmware and two Cove M1 or two Cove P1 speakers, bought separately.
Choose instead whenYou need one separate HDMI source input while keeping the cabinet only 2 inches high.
No external subwoofer or rear speakers are included.
Klipsch, Flexus Core 200
The Flexus Core 200 combines physical height drivers and built-in bass with a wired subwoofer output. It is useful if you want to add a conventional powered sub later, but Wi-Fi music is not part of this model.
Choose instead whenYou want the option to use a conventional powered subwoofer over RCA later.
No HDMI source input or Wi-Fi music streaming.
