Best for this need
Our pick
Start with ES5 for documented current 17 Pro support and magnetic mounting. Choose Go with Hub for a supported 15/16 Pro with a compatible mic and power. Creator Phone suits a lighter supported 4K60 kit, while T7 Shield covers a documented Samsung cable-based route.
ES5 has explicit current iPhone 17 Pro support and a magnetic mounting arrangement. It still needs a data cable, the correct case, exFAT without password protection and Apple’s power conditions. Before 4K120, verify another copy and reformat as Apple requires.
Choose an iPhone ProRes SSD around the exact phone, microphone and power setup. Check 4K120 reformatting before using the drive for family photos too.
What the facts say
Useful conclusions from the current portable ssds comparison, followed by the checked facts used to reach them.
Creator Phone removes 26 g of SSD body mass compared with ES5, but the recording qualification differs.
Calculation note80 minus 54 equals 26 g before cables, case and ring. Creator’s verified 4K60 path is not substituted for ES5’s explicit newer-phone and 4K120 support.

What matters in practice
Choose the complete recording rig and the next-session reset, rather than the biggest transfer number.
External ProRes recording depends on the supported Pro model and mode. Apple specifies exFAT storage without password protection, an appropriate 10Gbps cable, power no greater than 4.5W and minimum write requirements. 4K60 needs at least 220 MB/s, while 4K120 needs at least 440 MB/s on the supported 16/17 Pro models. Peak desktop speed alone does not verify sustained phone operation. ES5 has explicit current 17 Pro support. Go’s current footnote still says 17 testing is in progress.
A drive can occupy the phone’s USB port while a microphone and power source need connections too. Go with Hub is a documented route for supported 15/16 Pro models, subject to actual accessory and app checks. Magnetic ES5 and Creator Phone still need data cables and can compete with an existing magnetic grip or battery. Test the full connected setup before a one-off event. A hub solves connections, not every microphone compatibility question.
Apple requires reformatting before each 4K120 session. If the drive also contains family photos or the last event’s only footage, copy and verify those files elsewhere before erasing. A larger SSD cannot remove that conflict. For iCloud photos, use the documented original-file export route and verify the result. Deleting in synced Photos also removes the item from iCloud and other synced devices. A portable drive purchase is not an automatic backup service.
ES5 is 80 g before accessories, Creator Phone 54 g and Go with its hub 36 g. Go’s 13 g SSD-only number describes less than the linked package. Add the mic, power leads, mount and case before making a handling decision. A lighter body does not establish better stabilization or less fatigue. Check that the connectors remain secure and the setup leaves the controls usable in the intended position.
Go’s IP65 rating covers the SSD alone, not its hub. ES5, Creator Phone and Shield have their own stated body ratings, but those do not automatically cover the phone, cable or power source. Samsung explicitly requires dry drive and cable connections and says its cable is not waterproof. Use a sheltered arrangement where necessary and retain another copy. No laboratory rating guarantees the survival of an irreplaceable recording.

Lexar, LES5XXX002T-RNWNU
ES5 attaches behind a compatible phone and has current manufacturer support for iPhone 17 Pro recording. That makes it a more defensible shortlist choice for a new phone than a kit still undergoing compatibility tests. The magnetic mounting does not transmit files or free the USB port. A separate mic and power arrangement still needs checking.
Winner whenES5 has explicit current iPhone 17 Pro support and a magnetic mounting arrangement. It still needs a data cable, the correct case, exFAT without password protection and Apple’s power conditions. Before 4K120, verify another copy and reformat as Apple requires.
80 g body before the cable or ring. Check the grip, case and competing magnetic accessories.

Lexar, LSL400S002T-RNSNU
The Go kit is worth considering when an iPhone 15 or 16 Pro needs external storage, a microphone and power together. The linked Silver package includes the hub. Its 36 g combined body is small, but cables and connected equipment still count. Current Lexar documentation says iPhone 17 testing is in progress, so do not buy it as a confirmed 17 Pro recording kit.
Choose instead whenA supported 15/16 Pro needs storage, a compatible microphone and power together. The linked package includes the hub. iPhone 17 testing remains unresolved, and IP65 applies only to the SSD rather than the full rig.
iPhone 17 qualification remains unresolved. A compatible microphone and power supply need separate checking.
Sandisk, SDSSDE62C-2T00-G25
A magnetic 2TB drive for a documented 4K60 phone workflow. The 54 g body adds less carried mass than ES5 before accessories, but its larger face changes how it sits behind a phone. Data still needs the cable. A MagSafe battery pack cannot simply occupy the same mounting space, so check how the full rig will be held and powered.
Choose instead whenSupported 4K60 and a 54 g magnetic body cover the job. Check the actual case and grip. Its verified 4K60 support does not establish every newer-phone or 4K120 combination.
Verified support is for 4K60. Do not infer every 4K120 or newer-phone combination from the peak speed.
Samsung, MU-PE2T0S/AM
Shield is the more practical Samsung when the same working files travel through a dusty job site or wet commute. Its IP65 enclosure does not make the cable waterproof, so copying files still needs a dry connection. The included A and C cables suit mixed computers. A larger T9 speed number alone does not improve a laptop limited to USB 10Gbps.
Choose instead whenA cable-based Samsung workflow fits the rig. Samsung documents 15 Pro 4K60 and current US guidance includes 16 Pro 4K120. Use exFAT with Security Mode off, the right cable and dry connections. Unlocking Shield on a computer leaves security enabled and does not prepare the next phone connection. Keep required protected work on another approved drive. No magnetic mount or hub is supplied.
98 g body, versus 58 g for T7. Dry the drive and cable before connecting. IP65 does not cover immersion or guarantee recovery. Water damage is excluded from warranty.
