Main trade-off
Sony ULT FIELD 1
The stereo setting remains after power-off. Calls depend on the connected phone, operating system and application.
Head-to-head
Choose ULT FIELD 1 when occasional speakerphone calls or matching an existing FIELD 1 for stereo is the priority. Choose WONDERBOOM 4 for physical Podcast Mode or a compatible WONDERBOOM 3/4 partner. It has no microphone, and Podcast Mode applies only to the 4 in a mixed pair. Sony’s supplied cable supports 1.5 A, so its higher-current charging route needs another suitable cable. Neither USB port plays music, and both need a clean dry connection before charging.
Before you choose
WONDERBOOM’s physical Podcast Mode is useful when the phone is put away, but it does not add a microphone. If the same room routine includes answering occasional calls through the speaker, FIELD 1 has the documented controls for that job. Keep Sony’s phone and application limitations in view, and move a private call back to the handset when appropriate. Choose WONDERBOOM when calls are already handled elsewhere and local listening-mode selection is the repeated task. Neither the microphone nor a podcast preset establishes clearer voices or certified conferencing performance.
What this is based on
A podcast session interrupted by a call crossed with explicit microphone support and physical mode control.

Main trade-off
No microphone. A WONDERBOOM 3 in the pair does not acquire the 4’s Podcast Mode.
Sony ULT FIELD 1 vs Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 4 for podcasts, calls and trips. Compare direct controls, exact stereo partners and charging-cable limits.
Both fit the small portable-speaker purchase for a room and occasional outdoor use. Documented call handling, local podcast control, a matching owned speaker and the complete charging setup create realistic reasons for the same buyer to choose either.
Winner by situation
Sony documents the call route. WONDERBOOM has no microphone.
WONDERBOOM documents that local selection.
Sony stereo requires two FIELD 1 units.
Double Up supports the pair, with Podcast Mode affecting only the 4.

A second FIELD 1 creates the documented Sony stereo pair, and powering the speakers off does not clear that setting. End the pair in the app when the next day calls for separate rooms. WONDERBOOM 4 can instead join a 3 or 4, with a physical exit procedure, but a 3 retains its normal sound mode when the 4 enters Podcast Mode. Choose according to the speaker already owned and the way the pair will be split afterward. Shared music is not evidence that every control or special mode behaves identically across the two units.
An owned partner followed by separate-room reuse crossed with persistent stereo state and mixed-generation mode behavior.
FIELD 1’s supplied USB cable supports 1.5 A, the current used for its approximately five-hour full-charge reference while off. Sony also supports a 3 A route, but that requires an appropriate cable rather than merely replacing the wall plug. WONDERBOOM’s roughly three-hour reference assumes a source of at least 10 W. For two outings on the same day, compare the actual supply and cable already available before choosing around those times. With overnight charging, this distinction may matter less than calls or the owned partner. After outdoor use, clean and dry the connection before either refill.
Limited turnaround time crossed with cable current rating, power-supply requirement and post-use drying. No universal charge-speed winner.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | Sony ULT FIELD 1 | Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 4 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Take an incoming call | Documented speakerphone controls, with device/app limits. | Explicitly no microphone. | Sony provides the call route. UE keeps that task with the phone. |
| Select a listening mode | Physical ULT button, with app EQ. | Physical standard, Outdoor Boost and Podcast mode cycle. | A named local podcast mode is a control difference, not proof of better speech. |
| Add to an owned speaker | Two FIELD 1 units for stereo, retained across power-off. | Double Up with WONDERBOOM 3 or 4. Podcast Mode only changes the 4. | Verify both partner identity and the behavior retained for the next session. |
| Refill before another outing | About five hours at 1.5 A while off. Supplied cable supports 1.5 A. | About three hours with at least 10 W. USB cable is charging-only. | The charger and cable conditions must accompany the reference times. |

What matters in practice
A speaker used for podcasts may also need to handle a call, and a suitable stereo partner can matter more than the shared portable label.
