Main trade-off
Synology DiskStation DS223
Fixed memory is not meant for virtual machines.
Head-to-head
The DS223 is a two-drive DSM backup appliance with fixed 2GB memory. The DS225+ fits buyers who need an Intel platform, 2.5GbE or a supported RAM upgrade.
Before you choose
Synology DiskStation DS223 gives 12TB and Synology DiskStation DS225+ gives 12TB before formatting in this example. Changing chassis does not increase this protected capacity.
What this is based on
Assume every SATA bay contains a supported 12TB disk. Two-bay RAID 1 uses one disk of usable capacity. For three or more drives, RAID 5 usable TB = (drive count minus 1) × 12. This is an illustrative layout, not included storage or a backup.
Main trade-off
Fixed memory is not meant for virtual machines.
Main trade-off
There are no M.2 slots.

Compare DS223 and DS225+ by protected storage, included networking and the exact SSD or application layout you need.
The Plus step adds a faster port and a different application platform.
Before you choose
A decimal 1TB transfer over a single gigabit connection takes more than two hours even before protocol overhead. DS223 therefore cannot meet that exact two-hour full-copy window. DS225+ has a faster included port to investigate, with compatible source storage and networking still required. Choose DS223 if incremental backups or a longer schedule fit the household. Choose DS225+ when the shorter wired window is a real requirement.
1TB times eight divided by 1Gbps is 8000 seconds, or about two hours thirteen minutes before overhead. The 2.5GbE model clears this link-rate requirement but does not guarantee the real backup completion time.
A USB backup disk, an import SSD and a second archive disk use three physical connections. DS223 provides three USB Gen1 ports, while DS225+ provides two. Choose DS223 if that direct attachment layout matters and gigabit networking is sufficient. Choose DS225+ for its faster network path, while budgeting a connection rotation or checking a supported alternative for the third external device.
This compares the published three-versus-two USB socket count. The faster network model does not automatically replace every older connection role. No simultaneous transfer rate or universal external-device compatibility is implied.
Winner by situation
Using RAID 1 for two disks or RAID 5 for three or more disks, Synology DiskStation DS223 gives 12TB and Synology DiskStation DS225+ gives 12TB before formatting in this example. Changing chassis does not increase this protected capacity.
Included port rates are 1GbE and 2.5GbE. Use the 100GB calculation alongside the actual client speed.
Synology DiskStation DS223 supplies 2 GB RAM and supports 2 GB. Synology DiskStation DS225+ supplies 2 GB and supports 6 GB. Compare the stated application memory requirement with the supplied configuration before budgeting for an upgrade. RAM capacity alone does not establish application speed.
If the selected applications specify a 4GB memory budget, the fixed 2GB DS223 cannot reach it. The DS225+ also starts at 2GB, but its documented 6GB ceiling provides a supported upgrade route.
What matters in practice
Synology DiskStation DS223 gives 12TB and Synology DiskStation DS225+ gives 12TB before formatting in this example. Changing chassis does not increase this protected capacity.
Assume every SATA bay contains a supported 12TB disk. Two-bay RAID 1 uses one disk of usable capacity. For three or more drives, RAID 5 usable TB = (drive count minus 1) × 12. This is an illustrative layout, not included storage or a backup.
The line-rate lower bound is 800 seconds for Synology DiskStation DS223 and 320 seconds for Synology DiskStation DS225+. Real copies take longer. A 1GbE client makes the lower bound 800 seconds for both.
Decimal 100GB × 8 = 800 gigabits. Divide 800 by the fastest included port rate, 1Gbps or 2.5Gbps. Ignore protocol overhead only for this lower-bound calculation. Optional adapters and aggregated ports are excluded.
If the selected applications specify a 4GB memory budget, the fixed 2GB DS223 cannot reach it. The DS225+ also starts at 2GB, but its documented 6GB ceiling provides a supported upgrade route.
Scenario requires 4GB. DS223 maximum 2GB is 2GB short. DS225+ documented maximum 6GB exceeds the requirement by 2GB. Actual module combinations and application support must be confirmed.

Synology, DS223
The chassis has 2-bay storage. Its fastest documented network path is 1 Gbps.

Synology, DS225+
The chassis has 2-bay storage. Its fastest documented network path is 2.5 Gbps.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | Synology DiskStation DS223 | Synology DiskStation DS225+ | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fastest included Ethernet port | 1GbE | 2.5GbE | The client, switch and storage must keep up before this port rate helps a transfer. |
| Supported RAM ceiling | 2GB | 6GB | This sets the manufacturer-supported upgrade ceiling for concurrent services. |
| Processor | Realtek RTD1619B | Intel Celeron J4125 | Media engines, application architecture and concurrency depend on this platform. |
| Physical network connections | One 1GbE port | One 2.5GbE plus one 1GbE port | The DS225+ can separate physical wired segments, subject to routing configuration. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Synology DiskStation DS223. DS223 offers a fixed 2 GB memory budget and gigabit Ethernet. It fits a basic archive only when the chosen services and restore workload stay within those limits.
Choose Synology DiskStation DS225+. DS225+ adds a 2.5 GbE interface and an Intel platform, with memory expandable from 2 GB to 6 GB. A 4 GB application requirement needs that memory upgrade.
What matters in practice
The DS223 is a two-drive DSM backup appliance with fixed 2GB memory. The DS225+ fits buyers who need an Intel platform, 2.5GbE or a supported RAM upgrade.
Mirrored capacity stays the same for equal drives. Spend on larger disks before changing chassis if the only problem is a full two-drive mirror and the current bays support the intended drives.
The DS223 is limited to gigabit Ethernet. The DS225+ can use 2.5GbE when the client and switch support it, while retaining a separate 1GbE port. That is a tangible network change for large backup restores.
