Head-to-head

ASUSTOR AS5402T vs QNAP TS-464: Six drive positions each, but the SATA and NVMe mix differs

The short answer

Choose AS5402T for two SATA drives plus as many as four onboard NVMe drives. Choose TS-464 for up to four SATA drives plus two NVMe drives, or a supported PCIe expansion card. Both have six internal drive positions in total, but those positions accept different drive types and cannot be exchanged.

Before you choose

The reasoning and the trade-offs

Six drive positions can hide an incompatible drive plan

AS5402T allocates its six positions as two SATA and four NVMe. TS-464 allocates them as four SATA and two NVMe.

What this is based on

2 plus 4 equals 6 on both sides, but the connector counts are not interchangeable.

Main trade-off

ASUSTOR Nimbustor 2 Gen2

Only two SATA drives fit internally.

Main trade-off

QNAP TS-464-8G-US

Only two onboard M.2 sockets are provided.

About this comparison

Compare AS5402T and TS-464 for the split between SATA and NVMe storage, a PCIe network upgrade and installed RAM.

Winner by situation

Start with what you need it to do

  • Reuse four internal SATA HDDs

Only TS-464 has four SATA bays.

What matters in practice

The differences that matter

Six drive positions can hide an incompatible drive plan

AS5402T allocates its six positions as two SATA and four NVMe. TS-464 allocates them as four SATA and two NVMe.

How we reached this conclusion

2 plus 4 equals 6 on both sides, but the connector counts are not interchangeable.

The faster-network route depends on the expansion slot

TS-464 documents a compatible PCIe card path to 10GbE. AS5402T has no comparable general-purpose slot.

How we reached this conclusion

Both start with dual 2.5GbE ports, so the optional adapter is a separate purchase.

The smaller chassis starts with half the memory

AS5402T ships with 4 GB and the selected TS-464-8G-US ships with 8 GB.

How we reached this conclusion

8 GB divided by 4 GB equals two. This is capacity arithmetic, not an application-speed result.

What you give up

Every choice has a cost

If you choose ASUSTOR Nimbustor 2 Gen2

  • An 8 GB starting plan adds a compatible memory purchase.

If you choose QNAP TS-464-8G-US

  • The optional network card uses the single PCIe slot.

Recommendation switch

The decision flips if...

My drive plan includes four onboard NVMe SSDs

Choose ASUSTOR Nimbustor 2 Gen2. AS5402T supplies four sockets.

I need four SATA HDDs or a PCIe card

Choose QNAP TS-464-8G-US. TS-464 supplies those hardware paths.

I need four SATA HDDs and four onboard NVMe SSDs

Choose neither. Neither selected layout provides both counts.

What matters in practice

How to make the call

01

Six drive positions can hide an incompatible drive plan

List the physical drives you intend to reuse. Four SATA HDDs select TS-464 immediately. Two HDDs with four onboard NVMe SSDs select AS5402T instead. A six-position headline can conceal the wrong connector mix. This counts physical hardware only and does not promise that every desired RAID layout or migration is supported.

02

The faster-network route depends on the expansion slot

Choose TS-464 if a supported 10GbE card is already in the upgrade plan. Include the card, client adapter and any needed switch in the budget. AS5402T can provide more onboard SSD sockets, but that does not increase the speed of each built-in Ethernet port. Do not count its two ports as an automatic five-gigabit single-client link.

03

The smaller chassis starts with half the memory

If the planned workload already calls for 8 GB, price a supported ASUSTOR memory upgrade alongside the drives. TS-464 meets that installed-capacity requirement in the selected package. For modest file sharing, that capacity difference may not decide the outcome. Confirm the actual app requirements instead of assuming twice the RAM means twice the useful performance.

Check these before buying

  • Write the drive plan by connector type rather than total drive count.
  • Verify memory, adapter and storage-pool compatibility.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • No performance, reliability or acoustic comparison was measured. An empty bay or slot does not guarantee an in-place migration path.
