Main trade-off
Sony Alpha 7 IV body
4K60 uses Super 35 crop. There is one USB-C connection plus Multi/Micro USB, rather than two USB-C ports.
Head-to-head
A7 V widens 4K60, while A7 IV keeps the same still-file dimensions. Choose A7 V when wider 4K60 or separate USB-C data and power helps your regular work. Full-width 4K60 needs angle-of-view priority, which reduces part of the noise processing and can reveal more noise in dark subjects. Choose A7 IV when stills and its cropped 4K60 already meet the need. Both offers are body-only and use compatible E lenses and NP-FZ100 batteries.
Before you choose
At 4K60, a 24mm full-frame lens on A7 IV frames roughly like 36mm. A7 V can preserve the wider full-frame view with angle-of-view priority On. That helps when a parent filming a piano lesson cannot move the tripod farther back. Sony also warns that this setting disables part of the noise processing, which can make noise more visible in dark subjects. A dim room therefore needs a framing and lighting decision together. A7 V is useful when the wider view solves the real problem. A7 IV can remain sufficient if ordinary-speed recording, a wider lens or a different position already works.
What this is based on
24×approximately 1.5=approximately 36mm equivalent. Sony angle-of-view table plus explicit noise-processing qualification. Full-frame lens, 4K60 and no additional stabilization crop.
Main trade-off
4K60 uses Super 35 crop. There is one USB-C connection plus Multi/Micro USB, rather than two USB-C ports.
Main trade-off
Wider 4K60 disables part of noise reduction. USB power does not charge the battery during operation, and 4K120 uses Super 35.

Sony A7 IV vs A7 V for small-room video, existing E lenses and tethered work. Compare the wider-view trade-off, USB power setup and stills upgrade.
A direct Sony generation decision for a hybrid photographer with compatible lenses and accessories. The newer body changes useful video and connection behavior without increasing the stated large still-image dimensions.
Winner by situation
A7 V offers full width with the noise-processing trade-off.
A7 V documents PORT 1 data plus PORT 2 power.
Both have the same stated large-file dimensions.
Both retain those systems, subject to exact compatibility.

When a laptop controls the shoot but its USB power is insufficient for the chosen setup, A7 V supports data through PORT 1 and a separate power source through PORT 2. That gives a home studio a documented way to keep the fast data connection while using a suitable independent supply. A7 IV has one USB-C connection plus Multi/Micro USB, so do not assume the same two-USB-C arrangement applies. A7 V still needs a battery inserted and does not charge it while operating from USB power. The practical gain is a clearer connection plan, not guaranteed all-day runtime or a faster result from every laptop.
Sony A7 V side-port and USB power guides explicitly support simultaneous data/power. A7 IV connector inventory. No assertion that every other older-camera power arrangement is impossible.
Both bodies produce large stills at 7008×4672. If you photograph a child on the far side of a field and already crop heavily, changing from A7 IV to A7 V does not increase the pixel dimensions available for that crop. A longer suitable lens or a closer permitted position may address that particular problem more directly. A7 V can still bring useful capture and video functions, but those are different reasons to upgrade. Existing compatible E lenses and NP-FZ100 batteries also make staying with A7 IV a coherent choice when stills are the main job and the current workflow is reliable.
Identical stated large-still dimensions, shared lens mount and battery family. No claim of identical image quality, autofocus or sensor performance.

Sony, ILCE7M4/BQ
Stills are the main job, and the 7008×4672 output plus your compatible E lenses already provides the crop room you need.

Sony, ILCE-7M5
You need full-width 4K60 and accept the angle-of-view priority trade-off, including potentially more visible noise in dark subjects.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | Sony Alpha 7 IV body | Sony Alpha 7 V body | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4K60 with the same full-frame lens | Super 35 crop, roughly 1.5x | Full width with angle-of-view priority On | A7 V can avoid a wider-lens purchase, with a noise-processing qualification. |
| Large still files | 7008×4672 | 7008×4672 | The newer model does not provide extra crop pixels by resolution alone. |
| USB connections | One USB-C 10Gbps plus Multi/Micro USB | Two USB-C ports, PORT 1 data and PORT 2 power supported | A7 V offers a documented separate data-and-power arrangement. |
| Existing power and cards | NP-FZ100, two SD-capable slots | NP-FZ100, two SD-capable slots | Much of the accessory setup can remain, with exact mode requirements checked. |
| Internal 4K high speed | Up to 60p | Up to 120p in Super 35 | The faster mode does not preserve the full-width 60p benefit. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Sony Alpha 7 IV body. A7 IV remains a useful complete setup.
Choose Sony Alpha 7 V body. A7 V changes that part of the workflow.
What matters in practice
You want the upgrade to solve the room or workflow problem you have, rather than buy a newer version of a still file you already get.
