Head-to-head

Canon R6 Mark III vs Sony A7 V: Canon reframes a taller take, Sony separates USB data and power

The short answer

Canon reframes a taller take, while Sony separates USB data and power. Choose R6 III when a 7K 3:2 source at up to 29.97p makes horizontal and portrait edits easier. Choose A7 V when separate USB-C data and power or retaining suitable SD cards and Sony lenses fits the workflow. Sony’s full-width 4K60 needs angle-of-view priority, with potentially more noise in dark subjects. Both are body-only. Canon needs LP-E6P for full functions and mixed Type B/SD media.

Before you choose

The reasoning and the trade-offs

A taller recording can save a second take, but only if you plan both frames

A family performance or paid interview may need a wide film and a vertical excerpt. Canon’s 6912×4608 3:2 source gives a 2592×4608 portrait crop before processing. A 4K 3840×2160 landscape source gives about 1215×2160. Both can support 1080×1920 delivery in principle, but Canon leaves more space for repositioning and further trimming. That does not rescue a person who moved outside the recorded picture. Mark the intended portrait area mentally or with supported guides before shooting. Canon’s benefit applies to its up-to 30p 3:2 mode, while Sony may be the easier fit when ordinary 4K and the desk setup are the real priorities.

What this is based on

4608×9/16=2592,2160×9/16=1215. Recorded geometry only, before stabilization/rotation. No measured sharpness or automatic-editing claim.

Main trade-off

Canon EOS R6 Mark III body

Older Canon batteries or grips can restrict functions. RAW and high-frame-rate movies cannot make identical internal copies to both cards.

Main trade-off

Sony Alpha 7 V body

No internal 7K 3:2 source. Wider 4K60 reduces part of noise processing, while 4K120 uses Super 35.

Choose it for
  • You film an event once and want a taller 7K 3:2 source for two orientations, accepting the about 30fps limit and editing work.
  • Internal RAW is useful enough to justify appropriate media and a compatible editor, with no promise of identical RAW card backup.

About this comparison

R6 Mark III vs A7 V for one-take edits, a home studio and existing accessories. Check 7K 3:2, Sony’s wide-view setting, card formats and USB power.

Current full-frame hybrid rivals for a serious photographer who also films. Similar sensor-resolution headlines hide different source shapes, computer connections and supporting-media costs.

Winner by situation

Start with what you need it to do

  • Reframe one ordinary-speed take into two orientations

    Canon provides a taller 7K 3:2 source.

  • Use separate USB-C data and USB-C power connections

Sony explicitly supports that two-port setup.

What matters in practice

The differences that matter

A taller recording can save a second take, but only if you plan both frames

4608×9/16=2592,2160×9/16=1215. Recorded geometry only, before stabilization/rotation. No measured sharpness or automatic-editing claim.

A laptop and a charger can be two different partners

When the computer handles tethering but is a poor power source for the shooting setup, A7 V supports PORT1 for data and PORT2 for external power. Canon has one USB-C terminal, so its power-and-data arrangement needs to be planned around the exact host or a separately compatible power route. Do not assume the Sony layout describes both cameras. On Sony, a battery must remain inserted and does not charge while the camera operates from USB power. The useful difference is the documented connection arrangement at a desk, not a guarantee that a particular dock will keep the camera running indefinitely.

How we reached this conclusion

Sony side-port and power guide plus Canon terminal inventory. No claim that Canon has no alternative power accessory. Host/cable/supply compatibility remains required.

CFexpress on both shopping lists does not mean the same card

Canon’s first slot uses CFexpress Type B, while Sony’s first slot can take Type A or SD and its second takes SD. A card or reader bought for one CFexpress type cannot simply move to the other. If you already own two suitable SD cards, Sony can physically accept both, although the selected recording mode still sets speed requirements. Canon needs a mixed pair for two-slot work. For a buyer already adding lenses, batteries and a bag, the card-and-reader mismatch can be an easily missed cost. Build the media plan from the actual format and output before adding the body to the basket.

How we reached this conclusion

Exact physical card interfaces and recording-mode qualifications. No assumption that any SD card supports every format, or that the two cameras share CFexpress media.

What you give up

Every choice has a cost

If you choose Canon EOS R6 Mark III body

  • Budget LP-E6P and the exact Type B or SD card required by the selected format. A tall source still needs editing.

If you choose Sony Alpha 7 V body

  • Separate power needs a suitable supply and cables. USB power is not a battery-charging or unlimited-runtime promise.

Recommendation switch

The decision flips if...

The taller source changes the finished edits

Choose Canon EOS R6 Mark III body. Canon can justify its different media and battery plan.

The desk connections or retained Sony setup matter more

Choose Sony Alpha 7 V body. A7 V serves that complete workflow.

What matters in practice

Before you choose

You need one camera to work both at an event and back at the desk, without building a second setup around an overlooked connection.

Check these before buying

  • Both offers are body-only.
  • Check Type A versus Type B before buying cards or readers.
  • Check older Canon battery and grip restrictions.
  • Test wide 4K60 in the intended lighting on Sony.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • No measured image-quality, autofocus or thermal winner.
  • A tall recording does not eliminate framing or editing work.
