Main trade-off
Panasonic LUMIX S9 body
External flash is unavailable. One SD slot and no stated splash resistance.
Head-to-head
S9 gives two edits more room, while A7C II keeps the flash option. Choose S9 for a tall 6K 3:2 source that can become horizontal and portrait edits. Choose A7C II when compatible external flash and more still-file pixels matter more. S9 cannot use external flash. Both offers are body-only, use different lens mounts and crop 4K60.
Before you choose
S9’s 5952×3968 3:2 recording leaves a 2232×3968 full-height 9:16 crop. Cropping A7C II’s internal 3840×2160 16:9 recording vertically leaves 1215×2160. Both can serve a 1080×1920 portrait export, but the S9 source gives more room to reposition and retain pixels. That matters when one parent records a family event and cannot ask everyone to repeat it vertically. The advantage needs deliberate framing and an ordinary-speed mode. Neither guarantees that a child moving across the wide picture stays inside the narrow portrait crop.
What this is based on
3968×9/16=2232 and 2160×9/16=1215. Source geometry before stabilization/correction. No promise of identical image quality or automatic subject coverage.
Main trade-off
External flash is unavailable. One SD slot and no stated splash resistance.
Main trade-off
Internal 4K is a 16:9 source and 4K60 uses Super 35 crop. One SD slot.

Panasonic S9 vs Sony A7C II for family clips, indoor portraits and a small daily kit. Compare portrait cropping, flash compatibility and the lens you need.
Two compact full-frame bodies aimed at buyers who want a serious camera without a large everyday kit. Video orientation and indoor lighting create meaningful reasons to choose either system.
Winner by situation

A7C II supports compatible Sony-system external flash. S9 explicitly does not support external flash. If the camera also needs to make indoor family portraits using a suitable flash setup, that difference can outweigh the 28g body saving. Available light or continuous lighting may still suit S9, but they require a different lighting plan and do not make an external flash compatible. Check the venue, subjects and supported shooting mode before planning flash use. A7C II is the clearer choice when that accessory is already a firm part of the setup.
Explicit manufacturer flash compatibility versus unavailability, 514-486=28g. No claim of included flash, guaranteed results or suitability for every subject.
The S9 is often paired conceptually with Panasonic’s tiny 26mm F8 lens, but that optional lens is manual focus. The camera’s subject detection cannot turn it into a motor-driven autofocus lens. A family buyer who expects to follow a child or pet should therefore choose a suitable autofocus L-mount lens and recalculate the complete kit size. A7C II also needs an appropriate lens, and its 28g body difference is too small to decide the assembled setup by itself. Existing compatible E lenses can make Sony the simpler system choice, while S9’s tall video remains a distinct reason to build an L-mount kit.
Official S9 lens table states 26mm F8 manual focus. Body-only offers and different mounts. No comparative AF success claim or assertion every small lens lacks AF.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | Panasonic LUMIX S9 body | Sony Alpha 7C II body | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
