Main trade-off
Panasonic LUMIX S9 body
External flash is unavailable, one SD slot and no stated splash resistance. Body only.
Head-to-head
S9 carries the same tall source lighter, while S5II keeps flash and supported backup. Choose S9 for a compact everyday setup that does not need flash. Choose S5II when compatible external flash or eligible two-card recording copies are part of the job. Both supply 5952×3968 3:2 video up to 30p and both crop 4K60. These offers exclude lenses.
Before you choose
Both cameras record 5952×3968 in 6K 3:2 up to 30p. A 9:16 crop using the full source height is 2232×3968, before further stabilization or correction. That gives an editor room for a portrait export while retaining a horizontal version from the same deliberately framed take. S9 supplies that geometry with 254g less body weight. S5II is worthwhile when the connected equipment or recording-copy plan needs its larger body. Neither turns the tall mode into 60p, and neither guarantees that a moving subject remains inside both final crops without careful framing.
What this is based on
3968×9/16=2232 and 740-486=254g. Crop geometry only, no tested image-quality or tracking guarantee.
Main trade-off
External flash is unavailable, one SD slot and no stated splash resistance. Body only.
Main trade-off
Adds 254g before the lens. 4K60 still crops the view and tall 6K remains a 30p mode.

Panasonic S9 vs S5II for daily family clips, indoor portraits and travel. Compare the same 6K source, missing flash route and the copy before you get home.
Two full-frame L-mount bodies capable of tall 6K recording, considered by the same family or travel buyer. The smaller body changes available accessories and recording redundancy, not merely appearance.
Winner by situation
S9 saves 254g before lenses.
S5II supports flash in eligible modes.
S5II supports configured SD backup.
Both use APS-C crop at this rate.

A small S9 and compact lens can be appealing for daytime walks. If the same camera must later work with a compatible external flash for indoor family portraits, S9 has no supported external-flash route. S5II does, in eligible modes, although electronic or silent shooting and other special modes disable it. The decision therefore depends on how you intend to light the room, not simply on full-frame sensor size. Continuous lighting or available light may suit the S9 job, but they are different setups. Budget and plan the lighting method before buying the smallest body.
Explicit S9 flash unavailability and S5II external-flash manual with mode restrictions. No promised exposure, motion-freezing or health result.
If a child’s performance or a relative’s visit cannot be repeated, an external drive at home only helps after the files reach it. S5II can duplicate eligible recordings to two suitable SD cards when Backup Rec is selected. S9 has one slot. This makes S5II useful for reducing dependence on a single recording card before you return home. Both cards remain in one camera and share theft or loss risk, so separate copies are still needed later. Check capacity, speed and format on both cards, because a full or insufficient card can stop the supported backup recording.
One slot versus configured Backup Rec, explicit speed/capacity and card-format restrictions. Timing-of-copy inference, not absolute data protection.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | Panasonic LUMIX S9 body | Panasonic LUMIX S5II body | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tall video source | 5952×3968 3:2 up to 30p | 5952×3968 3:2 up to 30p | S5II does not add crop pixels to this particular mode. |
| Body with battery/card | 486g | 740g | S9 removes 254g before the lens. |
| External flash | Unavailable | Compatible flash supported in eligible modes | A planned indoor flash setup favors S5II. |
| Recording copies | One SD slot | Two SD slots with supported Backup Rec | Only S5II provides the documented two-card route. |
| 4K60 framing | APS-C crop | APS-C crop | Changing to S5II does not remove this room-width limit. |
