Head-to-head

OM SYSTEM OM-5 Mark II vs OM-3: OM-5 II travels lighter, OM-3 changes the power and pre-capture setup

The short answer

OM-5 II saves 78g, while OM-3 accepts specified USB PD power and a longer pre-capture buffer. Choose OM-5 II for a lighter stills bag when its compatible lenses and battery routine are sufficient. Choose OM-3 for its separate headphone output, qualified USB PD setup or broader pre-capture options. Both offers exclude lenses. Neither has a second card copy, and their fastest burst figures do not describe continuous focus with every lens.

Before you choose

The reasoning and the trade-offs

The USB-C plug hides two different power-bank routines

If the camera comes home from a walk and becomes a desk recording setup, OM-3 accepts a suitable USB PD source rated at least 27W with the specified voltage profiles. OM-5 II accepts 5V1.5A only to reduce battery drain and still stops when the internal battery runs out. A powerful bank does not upgrade that behavior. Both need an adequately charged battery, and neither power arrangement removes heat or card limits. Outdoors, close the covers again before relying on the rated weather-resistant setup. The useful difference is how the whole power arrangement works, not simply whether both sockets are USB-C.

What this is based on

Official supply requirements and weather precautions. No uninterrupted-runtime or powered-rain-use claim.

Main trade-off

OM SYSTEM OM-5 Mark II body

USB only reduces drain and stops helping when the internal battery empties. Tracking Pro Capture excludes other manufacturers’ MFT lenses.

Main trade-off

OM SYSTEM OM-3 body

78g heavier, changes batteries to BLX-1 and has no wired remote input. One card slot remains a limitation.

About this comparison

OM-5 Mark II vs OM-3 for walking, pets and close-up hobbies. Compare lens-dependent pre-capture, power-bank behavior and the real limits of in-camera stacking.

Both are small outdoor-oriented MFT cameras with one card and computational stills. A buyer deciding whether to carry and pay for the larger body needs to understand the power, lens and capture changes.

What matters in practice

The differences that matter

How we reached this conclusion

Official supply requirements and weather precautions. No uninterrupted-runtime or powered-rain-use claim.

A familiar lens can remove the feature you bought for a moving pet

For a dog running toward you, refocusing between frames matters more than the highest burst label. OM-5 II’s tracking Pro Capture is 10fps and excludes other manufacturers’ Micro Four Thirds lenses. Its 30fps mode fixes focus. OM-3 offers an ordinary up-to-20fps refocusing mode, while its 50fps option still needs a specifically supported lens. At the maximum buffer settings, 14 frames at 10fps represent about 1.4 seconds, compared with 70 at 20fps representing 3.5 seconds. These are nominal windows while half-pressed, not promises of sharp photographs. Check the exact lens and mode before buying either body for that moment.

How we reached this conclusion

14/10=1.4 seconds and 70/20=3.5 seconds at selected nominal rates and full buffers. Electronic-shutter artifacts, settings and lens limits remain.

More stacked frames do not create a high-resolution RAW close-up

A hobbyist photographing small craft pieces may value OM-3’s option to combine up to fifteen focus positions instead of OM-5 II’s eight. Both require a compatible stacking lens and save the finished composite as JPEG, with a roughly 7% tighter view in each dimension. Frame loose enough for that crop and keep the subject still. Neither lets you combine focus stacking with High Res Shot in the same capture. If the goal is a higher-resolution RAW composite with deep focus, buying OM-3 alone does not complete that workflow. Its extra frames help only when the subject, focus spacing and final output make use of them.

How we reached this conclusion

Documented frame ranges, JPEG output, crop and mutually exclusive modes. No claim that more frames always improve the picture.

What you give up

Every choice has a cost

If you choose OM SYSTEM OM-5 Mark II body

  • Bring charged BLS-50 spares. Verify the specific lens before relying on tracking pre-capture or focus stacking.

If you choose OM SYSTEM OM-3 body

  • Include compatible BLX-1 spares, a suitable PD source and a wireless remote if needed. Body-only offer.

Recommendation switch

The decision flips if...

Carry weight and existing accessories lead

Choose OM SYSTEM OM-5 Mark II body. OM-5 II keeps the lighter BLS-50 and wired-remote setup.

The home rig needs PD power or a longer pre-capture window

Choose OM SYSTEM OM-3 body. OM-3 supplies those options within its documented conditions.

What matters in practice

Before you choose

You want a light camera for walks, but want it ready when a pet moves and useful for a longer supported recording session at home.

Check these before buying

  • Both exclude lenses.
  • Check lens support for the exact computational mode.
  • USB-C does not imply USB PD.
  • Closed covers and a rated lens are required for weather protection.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • No measured focus success or heat-duration comparison.
  • Buffer duration is a nominal calculation, not recording time.
