Main trade-off
OM SYSTEM OM-3 body
One card slot and no wired remote input. Wireless RM-WR2 is separate.
Head-to-head
OM-3 saves 103g, while OM-1 II adds two-card still copies and a wired remote input. Choose OM-3 for lighter outings when one card and off-camera copies are acceptable. Choose OM-1 II when configured still-photo duplication or wired control matters. Both are body-only and use BLX-1 batteries. OM-1 II movies go to one selected card, so its second slot does not provide simultaneous movie backup.
Before you choose
If you photograph a graduation and then record a speech, OM-1 II’s two slots do not protect both jobs in the same way. A configured Dual Same mode duplicates stills, but movies go to either Slot 1 or Slot 2. For stills, Dual Same 5 stops when either card fills. Dual Same 6 continues on the remaining card, which means duplication has ended even though shooting continues. Choose the setting that matches the consequence you care about. OM-3 needs an off-camera copy for both jobs. Either way, verify important files at home because two cards inside one camera still share the risk of loss or theft.
What this is based on
Exact still and movie destination behavior in OM-1 II manual compared with one OM-3 slot. No all-mode backup promise.
Main trade-off
One card slot and no wired remote input. Wireless RM-WR2 is separate.
Main trade-off
103g heavier. Its second slot duplicates eligible stills, not movies, and card-full behavior depends on the selected mode.

OM-3 vs OM-1 Mark II for outdoor photos, family events and existing lenses. See the movie-backup exception, pre-capture window and remote-control trade-off.
Both use the same lens mount and BLX-1 battery, with high-speed pre-capture and outdoor protection. This is a direct smaller-body versus more equipped-body decision for the same photographer.
Winner by situation
OM-3 saves 103g.
OM-1 II supports configured still duplication.
OM-1 II selects one movie destination.
OM-3 is wireless only for remote control.

For a bird taking off while you are walking with family, both cameras can buffer before the full shutter press. At a selected 20fps with the maximum buffer, OM-3’s 70 frames represent 3.5 seconds and OM-1 II’s 99 represent 4.95 seconds. The larger body can therefore retain roughly 1.45 seconds more of that nominal lead-in. Switching to 120fps shortens the window and fixes focus, which may be the wrong trade for an animal approaching you. Faster tracking modes also depend on the exact lens. The useful purchase question is whether that extra lead-in and the still-copy workflow justify the larger body.
70/20=3.5, 99/20=4.95, difference 1.45 seconds. Maximum configured buffer and nominal rate assumed. No guarantee of focus or artifact-free capture.
Both take compatible Micro Four Thirds lenses and BLX-1 batteries, so comparing them with the same lens leaves a straightforward 103g body difference. OM-1 II also provides a 2.5mm wired release connection. OM-3 does not support wired remote control, even though a wireless RM-WR2 package may include a cable for other cameras. A person making long exposures from a tripod should check their existing release rather than buying an adapter on the assumption that any small socket will do. Wireless control can still suit OM-3, but it becomes another charged, paired accessory to prepare.
Verified body mass, shared battery and explicit remote compatibility. No claim that wireless control is inherently unreliable or that one grip suits all hands.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | OM SYSTEM OM-3 body | OM SYSTEM OM-1 Mark II body | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Body with battery/card | 496g | 599g | The same lens leaves a 103g carry difference. |
| Battery family | BLX-1 | BLX-1 | Existing compatible spares can serve either body. |
| Card arrangement | One UHS-II SD | Two UHS-II SD | The larger body adds still-photo duplication, not movie duplication. |
| Maximum pre-shutter buffer | 70 frames | 99 frames | Window length still depends on the selected frame rate. |
| Remote release | Wireless only | 2.5mm wired option | A cable-based tripod routine can favor OM-1 II. |
