Main trade-off
Nikon Z6III body
Mixed Type B/XQD and SD slots, single-card internal movies, and fewer large-still pixels than Sony.
Head-to-head
Nikon keeps 4K60 wide, while Sony keeps more still-photo pixels. Choose Z6III for full-frame-width 4K60,4K120 with DX crop, or an internal 6KRAW workflow. Choose A7 IV when 7008×4672 still files and retained Sony lenses or SD media fit better. Both offers are body-only. Sony’s 4K60 uses Super 35, and Nikon’s internal movie records to one card despite its two slots.
Before you choose
Sony starts with larger still files, but at 4K60 it uses Super 35. A 24mm full-frame lens then frames roughly like 36mm. Nikon can use FX at 4K60, so its 24mm view can retain the edge of a dining table or both people demonstrating something in a small room. The stills resolution headline does not predict that result. Sony is compelling when later cropping of photographs is the regular task, while Nikon may avoid a wider-lens purchase for video. Compare the chosen frame rate and exact lens, then check whether digital stabilization changes the view further.
What this is based on
Sony 4K60Super 35 versus Nikon FX,24×approximately 1.5=approximately 36mm equivalent. Still-image dimensions are a separate specification.
Main trade-off
Mixed Type B/XQD and SD slots, single-card internal movies, and fewer large-still pixels than Sony.
Main trade-off
4K stops at 60p and that mode uses Super 35 crop. No internal 6KRAW recording in its listed formats.

Nikon Z6III vs Sony A7 IV for family films and cropped stills. Compare 4K60 room coverage,6KRAW, card-and-reader reuse and the finished output.
Full-frame hybrid rivals for a buyer balancing photographs with video. Nikon’s newer recording options and Sony’s larger still files address different jobs, while the card ecosystem can alter the total purchase.
Winner by situation
Nikon supports FX at that frame rate.
Sony large files have larger dimensions.
Nikon has only one SD slot.
Nikon supports those separate modes with their restrictions.

A buyer with Sony Type A cards cannot reuse them in Nikon’s Type B/XQD slot, despite both products mentioning CFexpress. Sony also accepts SD in both slots, while Nikon accepts SD in only one. If the household laptop dock has an SD reader and the existing cards suit the chosen modes, Sony can preserve a simpler transfer routine. Nikon’s internal 6KRAW may justify different media and a reader, but that should be a planned part of the purchase. Choose the recording format first. Physical fit and a familiar card name do not establish the speed or compatibility needed for a new mode.
Official card interfaces. Type A and Type B are distinct physical formats. Existing-reader scenario conditional, with no invented transfer performance or universal SD sufficiency.
Nikon’s internal 6K N-RAW gives a compatible editor a different source from Sony’s internal 4K recording. That can be useful for deliberate editing, but a parent already struggling to finish last weekend’s film may gain more from a familiar workflow than a larger-format option. Sony’s higher-resolution stills may be the benefit used every day, while Nikon’s wide 4K60 or 120p mode may matter more for regular video work. Test the intended format on the actual computer before buying around it. Internal RAW removes an external-recorder step, but it does not remove the time needed to copy, edit and preserve the footage.
Recording inventories and stated compatible-editor requirement. Workload is a bounded user-workflow inference, without file-size, render-time or image-quality prediction.

Nikon, 1890
You need a full-frame lens to keep its wider view at 4K60 in a fixed room, with extra stabilization crop checked.

Sony, ILCE7M4/BQ
Stills need more source pixels for later cropping, and your lens and capture technique can make use of them.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | Nikon Z6III body | Sony Alpha 7 IV body | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4K60 lens coverage | FX available | Super 35 crop | Nikon can retain more room width with the same nominal full-frame lens. |
| Large still dimensions | 6048×4032 | 7008×4672 | Sony starts with more pixels for later still-photo framing. |
| Internal RAW video | 6K N-RAW up to 60p | InternalXAVC recording inventory | Nikon offers a different post-production route, with software requirements. |
| Card ecosystem | Type B/XQD plus SD | Two SD-capable slots, first also Type A | Neither CFexpress type nor reader should be assumed interchangeable. |
| High-frame-rate 4K | 120p in DX | 60p maximum | Nikon’s faster mode returns to a cropped view. |
