Head-to-head

Fujifilm X-T50 vs Sony a6700: Fuji lightens the stills bag, Sony simplifies a solo video setup

The short answer

Fuji saves 55g at body level, while Sony separates headphone monitoring from USB. Choose X-T50 for the lighter 40MP stills body, especially with suitable X-mount lenses already owned. Choose a6700 for a forward-facing screen, separate sound sockets or 4K120. Both offers exclude a lens and have one card slot. Fuji’s 6.2K is 16:9, and Sony’s 120p mode adds crop and removes internal proxies.

Before you choose

The reasoning and the trade-offs

The small body becomes a larger setup when you need to face it

A person recording lessons or a hobby demonstration may need to see the frame, monitor a microphone and power the camera through the session. Sony’s side-hinged screen and separate headphone socket address the first two without using USB for headphones. Fuji’s screen only tilts and its monitoring adapter occupies USB-C. Its microphone socket also shares the wired-remote role. Those conflicts can create more extra equipment than a 55g body saving removes. Check the supported power arrangement separately because a free socket does not guarantee unlimited recording or universal supply compatibility.

What this is based on

Screen and connector inventory crossed with simultaneous solo-recording needs.493-438=55g. No assumed hub or unlimited-power workaround.

Main trade-off

About this comparison

Fujifilm X-T50 vs Sony a6700 for detailed travel stills and regular solo recording. Compare sound and power, screen position, slow-motion edits and lens costs.

Two compact stabilized APS-C bodies near the same serious enthusiast buying decision. Detailed stills and recurring home recording create different practical priorities without comparing unrelated camera classes.

Winner by situation

Start with what you need it to do

  • Keep a small stills-led Fuji lens kit

X-T50 retains X mount and saves 55g at body level.

What matters in practice

The differences that matter

The small body becomes a larger setup when you need to face it

How we reached this conclusion

Screen and connector inventory crossed with simultaneous solo-recording needs.493-438=55g. No assumed hub or unlimited-power workaround.

A high-resolution photo body is not automatically the better video-crop body

X-T50’s 40MP stills can appeal when you want to crop travel photographs, but its 6.2K movie is 6240×3510 in 16:9. A full-height portrait crop is roughly 1974×3510, which still needs enlargement to fill 2160×3840. Sony’s 4K source has less portrait crop room again, so neither is the obvious choice if portrait 4K from a horizontal take is mandatory. For 1080×1920 delivery, both have nominal geometric room before further cropping. Decide the actual output first. Fuji can still be the stills-led choice without turning the 6.2K label into an unsupported open-gate claim.

How we reached this conclusion

3510×9/16≈1974 and 2160×9/16=1215. Both compared with requested output, framing and further crop matter. No measured image-quality equivalence.

The action clip has to survive the Sunday edit too

Sony adds internal 4K120, useful for slowing a short sport or playful-pet clip while retaining a 4K file. The mode narrows the view and excludes internal proxies at 120p/100p. Suitable media also depends on codec and ordinary versus S&Q recording. That can mean a wider lens, a different card or an extra computer step before editing. Fuji cannot do the same 4K120 job, but its lower ceiling may be sufficient if ordinary-speed films and stills are what get shared. Pick Sony when the extra mode has a recurring purpose, then test it on the actual editing machine.

How we reached this conclusion

Sony mode, crop, proxy and card documentation. Bounded workflow consequences, not a prediction of focus accuracy or laptop performance.
