Head-to-head

Fujifilm X-H2 vs Canon EOS R7: Fuji adds 8K editing room, Canon keeps a two-SD event kit

The short answer

Fuji adds 8K editing room, while Canon keeps two SD cards in the event kit. Choose X-H2 for a planned 8K or ProRes workflow and full-size HDMI. Choose R7 for compatible Canon crop lenses and a familiar two-SD setup. Both are body-only. X-H2 ProRes records only to CFexpress Type B, and R7 duplication also needs eligible modes and correct settings.

Before you choose

The reasoning and the trade-offs

Two slots can mean a different shopping list and a different backup

R7 accepts two UHS-II SD cards, while X-H2 combines one SD slot with CFexpress Type B. A pair of existing suitable SD cards cannot fill both Fuji slots. More importantly, X-H2 records ProRes only to its CFexpress slot, so the inserted SD card is not a simultaneous ProRes backup. R7 can duplicate supported recordings when configured, but overflow is different and movie auto-switch stops the take. If you are responsible for an unrepeatable event, select the format and duplication mode before buying media. Count the reader and off-camera copying routine as part of the purchase.

What this is based on

Documented slots, Fuji ProRes destination and Canon recording behavior. No promise of duplication in every mode or quantified reliability.

Main trade-off

Fujifilm X-H2 body

Mixed CFexpress Type B and SD media. ProRes cannot create an identical simultaneous SD copy.

Main trade-off

Canon EOS R7 body

No internal 8K or ProRes. Video auto-switch stops recording before changing cards rather than continuing the take.

About this comparison

Fujifilm X-H2 vs Canon EOS R7 for event photos and serious family films. Compare portrait crops, ProRes backup limits, media changes and lens reuse.

High-resolution stabilized APS-C bodies with two slots, viewfinders and forward-facing screens. A serious family or event photographer considering more video work has a plausible choice between them.

What matters in practice

The differences that matter

Two slots can mean a different shopping list and a different backup

R7 accepts two UHS-II SD cards, while X-H2 combines one SD slot with CFexpress Type B. A pair of existing suitable SD cards cannot fill both Fuji slots. More importantly, X-H2 records ProRes only to its CFexpress slot, so the inserted SD card is not a simultaneous ProRes backup. How we reached this conclusion

Documented slots, Fuji ProRes destination and Canon recording behavior. No promise of duplication in every mode or quantified reliability.

The bigger still file is a modest crop gain, the movie difference is larger

Fuji’s 7728-pixel still width is about 11% greater than Canon’s 6960. That is useful crop room, but not a substitute for a much longer lens at a sports field. The more substantial geometric difference appears in a planned video edit: X-H2’s 8K16:9 source can yield a 2430×4320 portrait crop, enough for 2160×3840 without enlargement before further cropping. R7’s 4K source cannot provide that same portrait 4K geometry from a horizontal take. Choose the output you need rather than using a megapixel percentage as a general claim of better family photographs.

How we reached this conclusion

7728/6960≈1.1103.4320×9/16=2430. Pixel geometry only, no measured resolution, lens reach or autofocus equivalence.

An 8K camera can add a computer step just when family time is scarce

X-H2 gives a busy parent or hobby filmmaker more room to reframe, but 8K at 29.97/25p disables in-camera proxy recording. If the home laptop needs lightweight copies, those have to be made afterward or a different recording mode chosen. Full-size HDMI and separate sound sockets can simplify a fixed setup, yet they do not solve editing compatibility or backup. R7 stays within 4K and keeps the two-SD workflow, which may be enough for the films you actually finish. Test the intended Fuji format in the existing editor before buying extra resolution that turns each short film into another preparation job.

How we reached this conclusion

Fuji 8K proxy restriction and connector inventory crossed with conditional lightweight-edit workflow. No assumed codec speed, storage requirement or thermal duration.

What you give up

Every choice has a cost

If you choose Fujifilm X-H2 body

  • Budget a compatible Type B card and reader. 8K at 29.97/25p excludes in-camera proxies.

If you choose Canon EOS R7 body

  • Qualified EF-S lenses need a separate adapter. EF-M lenses are incompatible.

Recommendation switch

The decision flips if...

High-resolution video and the connected rig lead

Choose Fujifilm X-H2 body. Fuji supplies 8K and the connectors with media and editing limits.

The existing Canon event kit leads

Choose Canon EOS R7 body. R7 retains compatible crop lenses and two SD slots.

What matters in practice

Before you choose

You want more editing options from the same event without losing the simple two-card routine that protects the original files.

Check these before buying

  • Both exclude lenses.
  • Check actual backup behavior in the selected mode.
  • Do not confuse CFexpress Type A and Type B.
  • Test 8K in the intended editor before buying.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • No measured autofocus or detail winner.
  • Two cards in one camera still share theft and loss risks.
