Main trade-off
NETGEAR Orbi 770 3-pack
The 2.5GbE WAN limits a faster internet-interface plan.
Head-to-head
Choose Orbi 770 when 2.5GbE ports meet the internet and wired-device plan. Choose Orbi 970 when the gateway needs native 10GbE or more LAN sockets. Its extra radio band is a design difference, not a guarantee of better coverage.
Before you choose
Orbi 770's 2.5GbE WAN is below the plan's nominal line rate. Orbi 970's 10GbE WAN clears that interface check, without guaranteeing a 5Gbps result at a client.
What this is based on
5 > 2.5 and 5 ≤ 10Gbps. Other ports, clients, Wi-Fi links and provider conditions may still be slower.

Main trade-off
Its satellite has only one 10GbE socket, which a 10GbE uplink consumes.

Compare Orbi 770 and Orbi 970 three-packs for faster internet plans, Ethernet sockets after backhaul, and the limits of a wired 10GbE layout.

Winner by situation
Both meet that interface ceiling. A 10GbE requirement does not exist in this scenario.
770's WAN is 2.5GbE. 970's is 10GbE.
After one uplink, 770 leaves one local port and 970 leaves two.
770 has no 10GbE port. 970 has only one at each satellite, which the uplink consumes.
What matters in practice
Orbi 770's 2.5GbE WAN is below the plan's nominal line rate. Orbi 970's 10GbE WAN clears that interface check, without guaranteeing a 5Gbps result at a client.
5 > 2.5 and 5 ≤ 10Gbps. Other ports, clients, Wi-Fi links and provider conditions may still be slower.
After both satellites connect directly to the router, 770 leaves one LAN socket and 970 leaves three.
770: 3 LAN - 2 node cables = 1. 970: 5 LAN - 2 node cables = 3. WAN uses its separate dedicated port in both counts.
Its single satellite 10GbE port is occupied by that uplink. The remaining two client ports are 2.5GbE, so a remote workstation needs another suitable wiring plan for an end-to-end 10GbE link.
970 satellite: 1 ten-gigabit port - 1 ten-gigabit backhaul cable = 0 free ten-gigabit ports. More radios do not change this physical port count.
Check your own setup
Planning to connect your mesh nodes with Ethernet? Count the sockets before you buy. This checks direct cables from the main node to each satellite, without an extra network switch. These choices are examples until you apply yours.
The sockets cover this 2-node wired layout, leaving 1 unused gateway LAN socket. The selected internet-to-device path has a 1 Gb/s link ceiling before overhead, not a promised download speed.
The sockets cover this 2-node wired layout, leaving 3 unused gateway LAN sockets. The selected internet-to-device path has a 1 Gb/s link ceiling before overhead, not a promised download speed.
Port speeds are physical link ratings, not Wi-Fi throughput. Cable quality, client adapters and network configuration still matter. All requested nodes must be included in the linked bundle. This assumes router mode with one internet socket and star wiring. PoE units also need a compatible power source, which this socket check does not size. A switch, access-point mode or another layout changes the result. It does not predict wireless coverage.

NETGEAR, RBE773
A tri-band Wi-Fi 7 mesh with 6 GHz, 2.5Gbps Ethernet and an enhanced backhaul link.

NETGEAR, RBE973
A quad-band Wi-Fi 7 mesh with dedicated backhaul, 10Gbps ports and a very large coverage claim.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | NETGEAR Orbi 770 3-pack | NETGEAR Orbi 970 3-pack | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| WAN port | 2.5GbE | 10GbE | An internet path above 2.5Gbps needs a faster WAN interface than Orbi 770 provides. |
| Router LAN ports | Three 2.5GbE | One 10GbE plus four 2.5GbE | 970 provides two more local LAN sockets, with one rated for 10GbE. |
| Satellite Ethernet ports | Two 2.5GbE each | One 10GbE plus two 2.5GbE each | A wired uplink consumes one socket at each satellite before local devices are connected. |
| Radio layout | Tri-band, 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz | Quad-band, 2.4GHz, two 5GHz bands and 6GHz | 970 adds a dedicated-backhaul band. The count alone does not establish real-home throughput. |

Recommendation switch
Choose NETGEAR Orbi 970 3-pack. Orbi 970 has a native 10GbE WAN port.
Choose NETGEAR Orbi 770 3-pack. Orbi 770 meets the specified connection plan.
Choose neither. Orbi 970 has only one 10GbE port per satellite and Orbi 770 has none.
What matters in practice
Orbi 770's 2.5GbE ports can match a network whose internet service and clients stay within that rate. The 970 becomes a different purchase when the gateway needs 10GbE or additional physical LAN sockets. A higher model number alone does not define a useful upgrade.
A satellite's first Ethernet socket may already be assigned to backhaul. That leaves one local port on 770 or two on 970. For a desk with a PC and console, this difference can remove the need for a local switch at the 970 satellite.
The 970 router has a dedicated 10GbE WAN and one 10GbE LAN connection. Each satellite has only one 10GbE socket. A full 10GbE star or a wired satellite plus 10GbE client needs additional topology planning, even though the box advertises 10GbE support.
