Head-to-head

Orbi 770 vs Orbi 870: 870 adds a 10Gb internet input, 770 suits a 2.5Gb home network

The short answer

Orbi 770 covers a large home with 2.5Gbps networking and a lower hardware cost. Orbi 870 adds a 10Gbps internet input, more radio capacity and higher published coverage and device limits.

About this comparison

Large-home tri-band Orbi Wi-Fi 7 three-packs.

The practical choice turns on aggregate class and internet port, then on the constraints in your own setup.

Before you choose

How they fit your plans

A media cabinet uses satellite ports quickly

A wired satellite beside a television, console and streaming box needs four Ethernet sockets including backhaul. Orbi 870 can accommodate that arrangement directly. The 770 satellite leaves only one local socket after backhaul, so the other devices need a switch or Wi-Fi. Choose 870 for the simpler wired cabinet, or keep 770 when the room already has an adequate switch.

Facts behind this advice

The 770 satellite has two 2.5GbE ports and the 870 satellite has four. The required wired backhaul consumes one on either unit.

Faster broadband does not mean one faster wired desktop

An internet plan above 2.5Gbps can enter the 870 through its 10Gbps WAN port, but one desktop on a built-in LAN port still uses a 2.5GbE link. Choose 870 when aggregate household demand and the incoming service justify that distinction. If the purchase is meant to give one wired desktop a 5GbE or 10GbE path, neither of these built-in LAN layouts meets that requirement.

Facts behind this advice

770 provides 2.5GbE WAN and LAN. 870 upgrades WAN to 10Gbps while its router LAN and satellite ports remain 2.5GbE.

Winner by situation

Start with what you need it to do

  • Low and stable gaming latency matters

Multi-gig wired ports and a strong backhaul path give consoles and PCs a predictable route to the gateway.

  • I want to plug in a TV and console beside a wired node

At least two Ethernet sockets remain on the satellite after its wired uplink is connected.

  • I need coverage across a large home

For vendor coverage, NETGEAR Orbi 770 3-pack records “About 8,000 sq ft” and NETGEAR Orbi 870 3-pack records “Up to 9,000 sq ft”. Treat this published coverage as a sizing boundary under the stated conditions, not a guarantee for every layout.

  • My internet plan is faster than one gigabit

For internet port, NETGEAR Orbi 770 3-pack records “2.5Gbps class” and NETGEAR Orbi 870 3-pack records “10Gbps”. This affects connection compatibility and available data paths. A higher label does not guarantee the same real-world result in every setup.

Check your own setup

Will your wired mesh layout work?

Planning to connect your mesh nodes with Ethernet? Count the sockets before you buy. This checks direct cables from the main node to each satellite, without an extra network switch. These choices are examples until you apply yours.

NETGEAR Orbi 770 3-pack

Meets these checks

The sockets cover this 2-node wired layout, leaving 1 unused gateway LAN socket. The selected internet-to-device path has a 1 Gb/s link ceiling before overhead, not a promised download speed.

NETGEAR Orbi 870 3-pack

Meets these checks

The sockets cover this 2-node wired layout, leaving 2 unused gateway LAN sockets. The selected internet-to-device path has a 1 Gb/s link ceiling before overhead, not a promised download speed.

Port speeds are physical link ratings, not Wi-Fi throughput. Cable quality, client adapters and network configuration still matter. All requested nodes must be included in the linked bundle. This assumes router mode with one internet socket and star wiring. PoE units also need a compatible power source, which this socket check does not size. A switch, access-point mode or another layout changes the result. It does not predict wireless coverage.
