Best headphones with long cables

Our pick

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x

Choose Audio-Technica ATH-M50x if you need a 3 m lead for an interface and a short lead for a laptop. The box includes both, plus a coiled cable. ATH-M40x covers the long-cable job at a lower stated headphone weight. Choose HD 650 only when the room is quiet enough for open cups.

Why it fits this need

  • The route around desk edges and furniture
  • Movement allowance at the listening position
Main trade-off
There is no Bluetooth or active noise cancellation.
Choose Audio-Technica ATH-M40x instead when
You need the long straight or coiled lead and do not need a short straight one.
More reasons behind this pick
  • Straight versus coiled cable behavior
  • Closed cups near a live microphone

What matters in practice

How to choose for this need

Measure the route the cable will actually take. Choose a supplied length that clears that route with slack, then decide whether the room calls for open or closed cups.

01

A three-meter cable is not three meters of free movement

Some length is used dropping from your ear, passing around a desk edge and reaching the output socket. M50x and M40x both include a 3 m straight lead. That is easier to compare with a measured route than the maximum extension of a coiled lead, which can pull as it stretches.

02

One package can cover two different desks

M50x includes a 1.2 m straight cable that M40x does not. If you alternate between a nearby laptop and a distant interface, the shorter cable reduces loose cable at the laptop. If the headphone never leaves the interface, M40x provides the same stated 3 m straight reach at 240 g rather than 285 g without cable.

03

Long reach does not settle the open-versus-closed decision

HD 650 and DT 900 PRO X also include 3 m leads, but both are open-back designs. Keep them for a quiet room. The closed M50x and M40x are more suitable beside a recording microphone, subject to playback level and fit. No cable length fixes sound leaking through an open cup.

Worked example

Will the supplied lead reach a 2.4 m route?

Suppose the measured path from headphone to interface, including the desk edge, is 2.4 m. Compare the straight cable lengths before deciding whether more slack is needed.

FormulaRemaining length = supplied straight cable length − measured route

  • The 2.4 m route is an example, not a recommended universal setup.
  • No extension cable is added. Coiled cable maximum extension is excluded.
Will the supplied lead reach a 2.4 m route?
ScenarioStraight cableLength left after 2.4 m route
ATH-M50x long lead3.0 m0.6 m remaining
ATH-M40x long lead3.0 m0.6 m remaining
HD 560S current lead1.8 m0.6 m too short

What that meansThe two 3 m straight leads clear this route. The current 1.8 m HD 560S lead does not, before adding any extra movement allowance.

Keep in mindRemaining length must be enough for your own movement. This example does not certify a safe cable route.

Check these before buying

  • Measure while seated or standing where you actually work, not with the headphone lying on the desk.
  • Do not stretch a coiled cable taut or route any cable across a walkway.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • Cable length does not predict electrical output quality or listening volume.
  • The calculation below is a routing example. Your desk and movement allowance may be different.
