Main trade-off
Amazon Kindle Scribe without Front Light 16 GB PA2MA3
No built-in front light, with the same 400 g device weight. Direct-page PDF writing still needs the upload workflow.
Head-to-head
Choose the unlit 16 GB Scribe for a well-lit desk when its available storage is sufficient. Choose the frontlit 32 GB model if reading continues in a dim room. Both weigh 400 g before the pen, so removing the front light does not make this Scribe lighter. Both include a non-charging Premium Pen, and both need Send to Kindle for direct writing on PDF pages.
Before you choose
The unlit Scribe suits a desk that already has good lighting. If you finish work, put the same device beside the bed and read after someone else turns the room light off, you also need a lamp. That adds placement and another light source to the evening routine. The frontlit model keeps the light in the reader, with adjustable warmth, though brightness and your partner’s tolerance still matter. Both weigh 400 g, so the unlit purchase does not compensate for that extra setup by making the device lighter to carry. Choose it when the room lighting is dependable, rather than hoping it is a more portable Scribe.
What this is based on
A two-location work-to-bed routine crossed with equal device weight and the explicit absence or presence of a front light. No sleep benefit or zero-disturbance promise.
Main trade-off

Main trade-off
The selected package has 32 GB nominal storage, not a smaller or lighter body. Work PDFs still require upload permission.

Compare the 11-inch Scribe without a front light with the lit 32 GB model. Check evening reading, usable storage and the PDF workflow before choosing.
These are two current 11-inch monochrome Scribes for the same Kindle books and handwritten documents. The cheaper configuration removes the front light and halves nominal storage. Buyers need to know whether those changes affect where they read or how they carry the device.
Winner by situation
The unlit model keeps the same page and pen without adding a light you rarely use.
The frontlit model avoids a separate reading-light setup.
Neither supports the required direct PDF handwriting through USB alone.
Each export creates another page. Agree how later corrections will be tracked before using either as the team record.

Amazon documents 10 GB available on the selected unlit model and 23 GB on the selected frontlit one. That is 13 GB more space at the stated software version. Check the size of the document collection you really want offline, leaving room for new files and updates. Bigger storage does not solve the more important restriction for a work PDF that cannot be uploaded. Scribe requires Send to Kindle to write directly on PDF pages. A USB transfer does not provide the same annotation workflow on either model. If that is forbidden by your workplace, resolve the transfer route before paying for more capacity.
Offline travel files plus workplace upload policy. 23 minus 10 equals 13 GB at the documented software state. No invented book counts, compression ratio or future storage guarantee.
The 32 GB frontlit Scribe can hold more files, but a team using OneNote should not mistake that capacity for a different collaboration model. Both Scribes export notebook copies. Sending the same notebook again creates another timestamped page, rather than replacing the earlier copy. If colleagues correct a meeting note in OneNote, agree where later amendments belong so another Scribe export does not leave two competing records. Choose the unlit model when its light and storage limits fit the desk job. Choose the frontlit model for those hardware needs, rather than expecting it to remove the handoff work.
Shared meeting records and repeated exports crossed with common copy-based integration and different storage/light configurations. No two-way editing inferred.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | Amazon Kindle Scribe without Front Light 16 GB PA2MA3 | Amazon Kindle Scribe 11-inch 32 GB PA2MA4 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carrying the hardware | 400 g, 189 × 245 × 5.4 mm excluding feet. | 400 g, same documented body dimensions. | Removing the light saves no documented bare-device weight or bag space. Covers and the included pen add to both. |
| After the room becomes dim | No front light. | Front light with adjustable warmth. | An external lamp becomes part of the unlit setup. Consider where that light falls in a shared room. |
| Documented available storage | 10 GB from 16 GB nominal. | 23 GB from 32 GB nominal. | The observed difference is 13 GB, not 16 GB. Software changes and actual file sizes determine the useful capacity. |
| Direct PDF handwriting | Premium Pen included. Send to Kindle required. | Same pen and PDF import requirement. | Neither purchase removes a work-file upload restriction. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Amazon Kindle Scribe without Front Light 16 GB PA2MA3. The unlit model can do the same documented handwriting job.
Choose Amazon Kindle Scribe 11-inch 32 GB PA2MA4. The built-in light removes a repeated extra step.
What matters in practice
You want the simpler Scribe for notes, but the same device may need to become your book after the room lights go out.
