Best for this need

Best e-readers for reading, marking up and returning PDFs

Our pick

Kobo Elipsa 2E N605

Kobo Elipsa 2E N605

Choose Elipsa 2E for eligible local PDFs that need handwritten corrections returned by USB. Choose the 11-inch Scribe for a larger, sharper page when Send to Kindle uploads are allowed.

Elipsa includes Stylus 2 and a 10.3-inch, 227 ppi page. The PDF must permit annotations and the device must be approved for work files. Its pen needs charging and the reader is not waterproof.

Why it fits this need

  • Permission to import the document through the required route
  • Readability of the actual full-page layout
Main trade-off
No waterproofing in Kobo’s feature comparison. Keep it away from the bath and wet work surfaces.
Choose Amazon Kindle Scribe 11-inch 32 GB PA2MA4 instead when
An 11-inch 300 ppi page and a non-charging included pen matter more, and the document can use Send to Kindle. Direct PDF handwriting does not work on USB-loaded PDFs. OneNote export sends copies, not a live two-way notebook.
More reasons behind this pick
  • A verified marked-up file the recipient can use

Choose a pen reader for PDFs around upload permission, page size and returning the marked-up file. Compare Elipsa 2E, Kindle Scribe and Libra Colour.

What matters in practice

How to choose for this need

Test the document’s complete round trip, including the person receiving the corrections.

01

Resolve the upload policy before the screen size

A work PDF may be approved for an authorized local device but not a personal upload service. Elipsa and Libra can mark up eligible local PDFs and return them by USB. Scribe requires Send to Kindle for writing directly on PDF pages. A USB cable does not remove that Scribe restriction. Check device policy and the document’s annotation permissions before treating any of these as a work purchase. A local route is not a security certification.

02

Try the smallest labels you actually need

Libra is easier to carry, but seven inches still shrinks a fixed-layout document. Elipsa provides 10.3 inches at 227 ppi, and Scribe provides 11 inches at 300 ppi. Open an example with the same margins, columns and annotations as your real work. A simple one-page form and a dense engineering drawing are different jobs. Avoid buying on diagonal alone or assuming a 300 ppi headline makes every small label comfortable.

03

Separate a PDF markup from an EPUB margin note

On Kobo, permitted non-protected PDF handwriting can return in the file. Handwritten EPUB marks stay on the reader. A course that supplies an EPUB one week and a PDF the next therefore needs file-specific checks. On Scribe, document type and import route also affect handwriting. Buying a pen reader does not make every ebook a shareable annotated document.

04

A meeting kit includes the pen’s next charge

Elipsa includes the charged Stylus 2, while Libra needs that accessory separately. Kobo says it can need brief charging to wake after disuse. Scribe’s included Premium Pen needs no charging. For occasional meetings, prepare the pen alongside the file instead of assuming a charged reader is a ready notebook. Keep replacement-tip care in mind too. The pen advantage should not override an incompatible document route.

05

Agree which returned version is the record

Copy a trial marked-up PDF back from Kobo and open it in the recipient’s normal viewer. For Scribe notebooks shared into OneNote, repeated exports create new timestamped pages. Decide where later corrections belong so the team does not work from two different copies. Color-coded marks also need an output that preserves their meaning, with text labels when color alone would be ambiguous.

Check these before buying

  • Get approval for the device and transfer route.
  • Check PDF protection and annotation permissions.
  • Inspect a representative page at the intended size.
  • Open the returned file in the recipient’s viewer.
  • Include the right pen, charging routine and case.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • No universal PDF compatibility or security certification.
  • No measured handwriting latency or conversion accuracy ranking.
  • No health benefit inferred from the display.

Our pick and alternatives

01
Kobo Elipsa 2E N605

Kobo, N605-KU-BK-K-BU

Kobo Elipsa 2E N605

Start here when a large local PDF matters more than a pocket-sized color screen. Elipsa 2E includes Stylus 2 and lets suitable non-protected PDFs arrive and leave over USB. That can avoid an otherwise unsuitable cloud-upload step. Its 227 ppi screen is a genuine difference from a 300 ppi Scribe, and it has no waterproof rating.

Winner whenElipsa includes Stylus 2 and a 10.3-inch, 227 ppi page. The PDF must permit annotations and the device must be approved for work files. Its pen needs charging and the reader is not waterproof.

Decisive facts

  • N605 Black 32 GB with Stylus 2 included. 10.3-inch Carta 1200 screen at 1404 by 1872 and 227 ppi.
  • 390 g without pen or cover, 193 by 227 by 7.5 mm. Adjustable warm front light.

Trade-off

No waterproofing in Kobo’s feature comparison. Keep it away from the bath and wet work surfaces.

02
Amazon Kindle Scribe 11-inch 32 GB PA2MA4

Amazon, PA2MA4

Kindle Scribe 11-inch 32 GB PA2MA4

A large Kindle that can follow desk notes into evening reading without a separate lamp. The included Premium Pen needs no charging. Before buying it for work, check the document path. Direct writing on a PDF requires Send to Kindle, so a no-cloud workplace can rule out the intended job even when the hardware looks ideal.

Choose instead whenAn 11-inch 300 ppi page and a non-charging included pen matter more, and the document can use Send to Kindle. Direct PDF handwriting does not work on USB-loaded PDFs. OneNote export sends copies, not a live two-way notebook.

Decisive facts

  • PA2MA4 Graphite, 11-inch 300 ppi monochrome screen with front light and included Premium Pen.
  • 32 GB advertised storage, 23 GB user-available at the documented software state.

Trade-off

USB-loaded PDFs do not support writing directly on the page. Confirm permission to use Send to Kindle for work documents.

03
Kobo Libra Colour N428

Kobo, N428-TP-WH-S-CK

Kobo Libra Colour N428

A seven-inch color reader with side buttons and optional handwriting. It is a useful middle ground between a pocket reader and a desk-sized notebook, especially when you want to mark up suitable PDFs locally. The stylus costs extra, and handwritten EPUB markups stay on the reader instead of becoming a file you can send.

Choose instead whenThe document remains usable on seven inches and a lighter carry matters. Its 199.5 g body supports eligible local PDF markup with a separate charged Stylus 2. Color is 150 ppi. Handwritten EPUB marks are not the same export workflow.

Decisive facts

  • N428 White, seven-inch Kaleido 3, 300 ppi monochrome and 150 ppi color, 32 GB.
  • 199.5 g without pen or cover. Page-turn buttons, rotation, warm light and IPX8.

Trade-off

Stylus 2 is sold separately in this exact White package. It needs charging.
