Main trade-off
Amazon Kindle Colorsoft 16 GB SA58CB
This Colorsoft is a reading device, not a Scribe pen notebook. Color remains 150 ppi on a seven-inch page.
Head-to-head
Choose Colorsoft if a protected Kindle library or Kindle Unlimited is central to your reading. Choose Libra Colour for its buttons and optional PDF handwriting when your books fit Kobo’s supported routes. Libra can add pen markup to eligible PDFs, but that does not make Kindle Unlimited books transferable. Its pen is separate, and handwritten EPUB marks cannot be exported.
Before you choose
A student who reads Kindle Unlimited novels for pleasure and wants handwritten notes for a course has two separate requirements. Libra’s pen support addresses suitable documents, but it does not transfer that borrowed Kindle library. Amazon’s publisher-controlled DRM-free download route excludes Kindle Unlimited loans. Check the actual course files and the books you want on the new reader. If the course material is a permitted PDF and keeping a phone or existing Kindle for leisure reading is acceptable, Libra can fill the note-taking role. If one device must keep the subscription and the notes are optional, Colorsoft is the cleaner fit for that library.
What this is based on
Leisure subscription, course documents and a one-device preference crossed with licensing and pen workflow. No assumption that all purchased Kindle books are locked or that all can move.

Main trade-off
Stylus 2 is separate. EPUB handwriting stays on the reader, and Kindle subscriptions do not become Kobo files.

Compare the 16 GB Kindle Colorsoft with Kobo Libra Colour for existing books, color highlights and shared PDF notes. Check the pen and export restrictions.
These are dedicated seven-inch color readers from competing book ecosystems. Both fit novels, illustrated books and color highlighting. The choice is meaningful for buyers tempted by Libra’s buttons and optional pen while already owning or borrowing Kindle books.
Winner by situation
Those borrowed books do not use the DRM-free purchase download route.
Libra with a separate Stylus 2 has the documented PDF return workflow.
Neither selected workflow supplies this requirement.
Both support a separate compatible remote. Remote control alone need not force a change of book store.

Libra can be a practical step up for someone who circles changes on a club newsletter or a permitted work PDF and sends the result back to its author. The markup remains in the eligible PDF copied over USB. That is a complete return route a color highlighter alone does not establish. The same reasoning cannot be carried over to handwritten notes in an EPUB. Kobo says those marks stay on the reader. Buy the separate pen for the specific document job, and try the returned PDF in the recipient’s viewer. If you mainly highlight passages for yourself, the existing book library is more likely to decide between these readers.
A shared document, handwritten corrections and return to another person crossed with Kobo’s PDF-versus-EPUB export boundary. No general export guarantee inferred from color or pen support.
Libra’s buttons are useful to try for handheld reading. If the reader instead spends most evenings on a stand, both products have a documented separate remote option: Kindle Click supports 2024-and-later Kindles, and Kobo Remote supports Libra Colour. You do not need to change book ecosystems merely to avoid reaching the screen. Check the actual remote, stand position and controls you need. Libra’s pen or file workflow may still justify switching, but remote page turning alone is a weak reason to leave an established Kindle library.
Propped evening reading, an established book collection and avoiding repeated reaching crossed with both platforms’ separate remote compatibility. No medical handling benefit inferred.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | Amazon Kindle Colorsoft 16 GB SA58CB | Kobo Libra Colour N428 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Existing Kindle library | Dedicated Kindle book and eligible subscription route. | Only eligible DRM-free publisher-enabled downloads can move through the documented route. | Inventory the books you must keep. Kindle Unlimited borrowing is excluded from that download option. |
| Handwritten document work | Not a Scribe pen model. | Optional Stylus 2 for permitted PDF and EPUB handwriting. | A pen-capable device still has file-specific restrictions. |
| Taking the marks elsewhere | Reading and highlighting model, not the Scribe handwritten-PDF workflow. | Eligible PDF markup exports, EPUB handwriting does not. | Choose around the document you need to share, rather than the presence of a pen in promotional photos. |
| Color page | Seven inches, 300 ppi monochrome and 150 ppi color. | Seven inches, 300 ppi monochrome and 150 ppi color. | Neither gains page area in this comparison. A dense comic page may still need zooming. |
