Main trade-off
Brother DS-740D
There is no stack feeder or wireless connection.
Head-to-head
Choose the DS-940DW when you genuinely want to leave the laptop behind. Choose the DS-740D when the laptop is already part of the job and you mainly need two-sided scanning at a small desk.
Before you choose
Both scan two sides in one pass and both accept one original at a time. The DS-940DW pays off for mobile capture rather than for making a 30-sheet packet unattended.
What this is based on
Battery, Wi-Fi and microSD are the meaningful additions. No stack feeder is specified on either model.
Main trade-off
There is no stack feeder or wireless connection.
Main trade-off
It accepts one sheet at a time and the microSD card is sold separately.

Compare laptop-powered scanning with battery, phone and microSD workflows. See why long receipts need a different path on the DS-940DW.

Winner by situation
Battery power and Wi-Fi make the DS-940DW the relevant option.
USB powers both.
Long-paper scanning needs the correct path and enough room for the moving original.
Both remain single-sheet feeders.
What matters in practice
Both scan two sides in one pass and both accept one original at a time. The DS-940DW pays off for mobile capture rather than for making a 30-sheet packet unattended.
Battery, Wi-Fi and microSD are the meaningful additions. No stack feeder is specified on either model.
The DS-940DW's 72-inch maximum is a simplex limit. Duplex tops out at 16 inches, while the return path allows regular paper up to 11.69 inches and narrow receipts up to 14 inches. A six-foot receipt therefore cannot keep using the space-saving return setup.
Use the supported straight path and long-document settings. The 14-inch return receipt limit also requires a width no greater than 3.13 inches.
The DS-940DW supports microSD saving, but Brother sells the card separately. If offline capture is your reason to upgrade, include a supported card in the purchase plan. The DS-740D instead sends the file to its connected host.
This compares where the file can go. It makes no claim that an SD card is encrypted or automatically backed up.

Brother, DS-740D
Capture both faces of a loose form without turning it, with a return path for a cramped desk.

Brother, DS-940DW
Scan two-sided forms away from an outlet, then send them to a phone or save to a microSD card.
