Main trade-off
Brother ADS-1300
Heavier unit and power requirements that may add an adapter.
Head-to-head
Choose the ADS-1300 when supported paperwork arrives in short stacks and a verified 15 W USB-C source or the correct optional adapter is available. Its 20-sheet feeder removes individual sheet loading. Choose the roughly 1.43 lb DS-740D when a compatible computer is available and a lighter bag matters more than feeding a stack. Neither is a battery-powered, phone-only setup.
Before you choose
For 12 supported sheets, the ADS can start from one loaded stack. The DS requires 12 placements even though it reads both sides in one pass. That difference remains when the page rate is unimportant, such as scanning a small packet while doing another task.
What this is based on
Both scan two sides in one pass. Only ADS-1300 feeds the next supported sheet from a loaded stack, so fewer hand placements do not imply faster processing or better jam resistance.

Main trade-off
Every sheet needs placement.

Compare batch handling, USB power requirements and paper-path limits before choosing a portable duplex scanner.
A mobile worker choosing between a small feeder scanner and a single-sheet duplex scanner faces a real trade between handling each page and carrying a larger, more power-demanding unit.
Winner by situation
Both capture both sides, but DS needs individual placement.
DS is materially lighter as a unit.
ADS requires at least 15 W. DS still needs a compatible computer USB connection.
ADS-1300 can save to a supported USB drive with a 15 W USB-C supply or the correct optional AC adapter, neither included. Use a compatible computer for Remote Setup when scan options need changing. DS-740D uses a connected computer for its documented file workflow.

ADS bus power saves a wall adapter only when the computer port meets Brother's 15 W requirement. With a USB-A connection or insufficient output, Brother calls for the optional AC adapter. Include that supply in the carry decision before calling the ADS a one-cable setup.
Brother specifies the power available from the port, not just the shape of its connector. A USB-A connection needs the optional AC supply.
The DS return guide has an ordinary-paper limit of 11.69 inches, with separate receipt rules. Duplex scanning permits up to 16 inches and one-sided scanning up to 72 inches. Legal-size ordinary sheets therefore need a different paper path. Do not plan the work area around the return guide alone.
The DS-740D manual gives different limits for the return guide, two-sided scans and one-sided long scans. Choose the path before measuring the work area.

Brother, ADS-1300
A 20-sheet duplex feeder with verified 15 W USB-C power or the correct optional adapter. The exact US brochure lists a 3.0 lb unit.

Brother, DS-740D
A roughly 1.43 lb duplex scanner that takes one sheet at a time beside a compatible computer. The return path is restricted to supported originals.
Meaningful differences
| What changes | Brother ADS-1300 | Brother DS-740D | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loading | 20-sheet ADF | One sheet at a time | A 12-sheet packet fits one ADS feeder load but still needs 12 individual placements in the DS. |
| Power path | USB-C with at least 15 W output, or suitable separate supply | Micro USB 3.0 power from computer | Check the actual computer port. A USB-C shape alone does not establish sufficient output for the ADS. |
| Carried unit | 3.0 lb in the exact US brochure and manual | About 1.43 lb | DS-740D remains the lighter unit. Add the computer, cables and any power adapter to the actual carrying kit. |
| Two-sided documents | Single-pass duplex ADF | Single-pass duplex, up to 16-inch document length | The DS 72-inch headline limit applies to one-sided scanning, not every duplex job. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Brother ADS-1300. With eligible stacks and the documented power route available, the ADS feeder removes individual sheet placements.
Choose Brother DS-740D. The DS is the lighter travel choice when a computer is available and individual sheet placement is acceptable. A small packet alone does not establish that portability matters.
Choose neither. These models do not establish that complete workflow.
