Main trade-off
Breville Compact Smart Oven
There is no convection fan, and its smaller pan and four-slice limit can split a shared meal into batches.
Head-to-head
Choose BOV650 for smaller meals when counter width is precious. Choose BOV800 when six toast slices, a 13-inch pizza or the included 12-inch baking pan would prevent a second load. The larger oven adds only 0.4 inch of body depth but 1.9 inches of width. Neither has a dedicated air-fry program.
Before you choose
A buyer with a shallow counter may reject BOV800 just because it looks bigger. The published bodies differ by only 0.4 inch in depth, while BOV800 adds 1.9 inches of width and 0.65 inch of height. If width is available, the larger toast and pan capacity may be a useful trade. If a narrow worktop must also hold your chopping board, that width may be harder to give up. Both manuals require four-inch side gaps, so compare about 25 versus 26.9 inches of horizontal operating space before checking the remaining placement rules.
What this is based on
18.9 minus 17 = 1.9 inches in width, 15.9 minus 15.5 = 0.4 in depth, 10.9 minus 10.25 = 0.65 in height. Add eight inches for documented side gaps only. No full installation fit is guaranteed.

Main trade-off
The 18.9-inch body needs at least 4 inches of clear space on each side. It has no dedicated air fry or interior light.

Compare Breville BOV650 and BOV800 for shared breakfasts, real pan sizes and crowded counters. See when the larger convection oven earns its space.
Both are established Breville LCD-controlled ovens for toast, pizza and baking. This is a useful step-up decision for a buyer who does not need a dedicated air fryer.
Winner by situation
The compact keeps more body width available when four slices are enough.
The larger rated load can prevent a second batch.
Neither model supplies that program and basket combination.
Pizza diameter is not a casserole clearance measurement. Measure the full dish including handles and follow cookware guidance.

Three people wanting two slices each creates a six-slice job. BOV800’s advertised capacity covers that in one load, while BOV650 needs at least two. For a household that leaves together most mornings, avoiding the split can matter every day. If you normally eat alone and only host occasionally, the extra space is occupied daily for a benefit you rarely use. Different slice sizes or darkness preferences can still split the larger load. This is a batch-count comparison, not a promise that breakfast will take a particular number of minutes.
Six ordinary slices divided by rated capacities gives ceiling(6/4) = 2 and ceiling(6/6) = 1. Simultaneous eating, matching settings and fitting slices are explicit scenario assumptions.
If the family repeatedly divides a tray recipe to fit the compact oven, BOV800 supplies a 12-inch square pan instead of BOV650’s 10-inch square pan. Those outer dimensions describe a 44% larger square, but they do not prove 44% more cookies or food. Usable bases, spacing and the recipe still control the load. Bring the dimensions of your usual dish, including handles, to the decision. BOV800 is worthwhile when a verified pan fit avoids a real second batch. A larger model name alone is not enough to establish that your existing dish fits.
12 × 12 / (10 × 10) - 1 = 44% nominal square-area difference. It is deliberately not used as usable cooking-area or serving-capacity evidence. The supplied pans establish a reason to investigate actual fit.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | Breville Compact Smart Oven | Breville Smart Oven | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Body width and depth | 17 W by 15.5 D inches | 18.9 W by 15.9 D inches | Most of the step up is width, which may be the valuable preparation space. |
| Width including side gaps | 25 inches, before other placement requirements | 26.9 inches, before other placement requirements | Both add eight inches of horizontal ventilation to the body width. |
| Toast capacity | Four slices | Six slices | A six-slice breakfast changes from at least two loads to one, subject to fit and preferences. |
| Pizza and supplied pan | 12-inch pizza, 10-inch square baking pan | 13-inch pizza, 12-inch square baking pan | Real cookware and food dimensions decide whether the extra width helps. |
| Convection | No fan | Selectable convection | Check recipe adjustment guidance instead of assuming equal settings give equal results. |
| Dedicated air fry | No | No | Choose another model if that is the main missing function. |
