Main trade-off
Breville Compact Smart Oven
There is no convection fan or dedicated air-fry mode. It is not a like-for-like replacement for an air fryer.
Head-to-head
Choose BOV650 for a shallower counter and 12-inch pizza when air frying is already covered. Choose BOV680 for a narrow counter and regular air-fried snacks, provided its extra depth and 11-inch pizza limit work for you. Both toast four slices, so the newer oven does not remove an extra breakfast batch.
Before you choose
In a small apartment, the kettle and cutting board may compete for width while the backsplash limits depth. BOV680 saves 1.3 inches of body width but adds 1.4 inches of depth compared with BOV650. Its body rectangle is even slightly larger overall, about 265 versus 264 square inches. Choose it for the shape of your available space and the air-fry function, rather than assuming it occupies less counter. Both need side clearance, and door movement, ventilation and the complete placement instructions still matter.
What this is based on
Published width multiplied by depth gives 15.7 × 16.9 = 265.33 and 17 × 15.5 = 263.5 square inches. This compares body rectangles only. Horizontal planning width adds the documented four-inch gap on each side.
Main trade-off
There is no convection fan or dedicated air-fry mode. It is not a like-for-like replacement for an air fryer.
Main trade-off
The body is 1.4 inches deeper and pizza capacity drops to 11 inches. Check the actual food and pan you use.

Compare Breville BOV650 and BOV680 for shallow counters, pizza night and interrupted breakfasts. The newer compact air fryer is narrower but deeper.
These are the two compact Breville ovens a small household is likely to shortlist. The newer model adds air frying while changing the body shape and reducing the advertised pizza diameter.
Winner by situation
BOV650 is shallower and avoids buying the same air-fry job twice.
BOV680 combines those jobs, but still needs its full depth and ventilation.
Both are advertised for four slices, so neither solves the one-load requirement.
BOV650 lists a 12-inch pizza capacity. BOV680 lists 11 inches.
What matters in practice

BOV680 can take over toast and air-fried snacks, which is useful when both appliances currently crowd a small kitchen. But if one person wants toast while another wants fries at a different temperature, both jobs now queue for the same chamber. Keeping BOV650 beside an air fryer preserves two separate cooking spaces, subject to safe placement and your electrical setup. The compact air fryer makes more sense when your household uses those functions one after the other. Do not count the removed appliance as a pure saving until you check how dinner is actually made.
BOV680 combines oven and air-fry functions in one chamber. BOV650 provides conventional oven functions. Concurrent work is a bounded household scenario with an existing separate air fryer, not a claimed speed or power result.
If you and your partner prefer different toast darkness, BOV680 lets you remove the lighter slices and promptly give the remaining toast a little longer. Its A Bit More button is useful at that moment. For Toast and Bagel, however, it times out after one minute. A school-morning interruption can easily put you back to selecting another cycle, much as you would on BOV650. Both ovens also stop at four advertised slices. Buy the new model for the routine you can actually use, without treating the button as a waiting or breakfast-holding function.
BOV680 manual gives a one-minute activation window. BOV650 permits time adjustment and new cycles. Removing selected pieces assumes safe handling with mitts, and no browning uniformity or elapsed-time saving is claimed.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | Breville Compact Smart Oven | Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Compact | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Body width and depth | 17 W by 15.5 D inches | 15.7 W by 16.9 D inches | The narrower choice reaches farther back on the counter. |
| Width with side clearance | 25 inches from body plus two 4-inch gaps | 23.7 inches from body plus two 4-inch gaps | These are horizontal planning figures, not complete installation clearances. |
| Pizza size | Up to 12 inches | Up to 11 inches | Check your usual frozen pizza before treating the new model as a drop-in replacement. |
| Toast capacity | Four slices | Four slices | Six slices still require at least two loads with either oven. |
| Air-fry equipment | No convection fan or air-fry basket in the standard kit | Super convection and included air-fry basket | The change matters most if it replaces an appliance you currently use. |
| Extra toast browning | Adjust time during the cycle or start another cycle | A Bit More after cooking, within a one-minute window | Convenient for an immediate preference change, less useful after a longer interruption. |
