Head-to-head

Yamaha RX-A2A vs RX500A: A2A separates room sources, RX500A needs less shelf depth

The short answer

Choose A2A when independent, supported Zone 2 sources or five to seven HDMI players matter. An external Zone 2 amp can preserve main-room heights, but A2A Zone 2 excludes HDMI source audio. Choose RX500A for a four-source system with less shelf depth. RX500A is 319 mm deep, before cable and cooling clearance. A2A is about 371.5 mm deep and also needs its HDMI board revision checked for high-refresh gaming.

Before you choose

The reasoning and the trade-offs

A different kitchen program needs a different route, not a volume button

If one person wants a film while another wants music while cooking, RX500A Zone B cannot separate their programs. It shares the main input even when volume is set independently. A2A Zone 2 can select supported sources separately, and its line output can feed another amplifier to preserve 5.1.2 in the main room. The catch is HDMI audio. A streamer connected only by HDMI is not a qualifying A2A Zone 2 source, so check how the actual music will reach the receiver.

What this is based on

Zone source table and amplifier assignment crossed with simultaneous different household activities. Independent volume is distinguished from independent content.

Main trade-off

Yamaha RX-A2A

Zone 2 excludes HDMI audio, and powered Zone 2 borrows the height amplifiers. Check the HDMI hardware revision.

  • Five to seven HDMI sources need permanent direct connections.

About this comparison

Yamaha RX-A2A vs RX500A for family films, kitchen music and a shallow media shelf. Check Zone 2 restrictions, source capacity and the A2A HDMI board.

Both seven-channel Yamahas can run 5.1.2. They are plausible alternatives for a shared family room, especially when an older AVENTAGE offer competes with the newer RX500A.

Winner by situation

Start with what you need it to do

  • Different supported music in the kitchen during a film

A2A supports independent non-HDMI Zone 2 sources. Plan amplification and input routing.

What matters in practice

The differences that matter

A different kitchen program needs a different route, not a volume button

If one person wants a film while another wants music while cooking, RX500A Zone B cannot separate their programs. It shares the main input even when volume is set independently. A2A Zone 2 can select supported sources separately, and its line output can feed another amplifier to preserve 5.1.2 in the main room. The catch is HDMI audio. A streamer connected only by HDMI is not a qualifying A2A Zone 2 source, so check how the actual music will reach the receiver.

How we reached this conclusion

Zone source table and amplifier assignment crossed with simultaneous different household activities. Independent volume is distinguished from independent content.

A shallow shelf can outweigh three extra sockets

RX500A body depth is 319 mm. A2A published depth converts to about 371.5 mm, roughly 52.5 mm more. On furniture where rear plugs are already difficult to reach, the shorter body can leave more room for supported cable bends and access. This is not a safe-clearance calculation. Both still need the ventilation and installation space required by their manuals. If all four sources fit RX500A, the unused A2A inputs may not justify the deeper installation.

How we reached this conclusion

14.625 inches times 25.4 equals 371.475 mm, rounded to about 371.5. Compared with 319 mm. Bare dimensions do not establish safe enclosure fit.

New in the box does not identify the A2A HDMI hardware

An older new-condition A2A offer can be attractive, but new condition does not prove which HDMI board is installed. Yamaha documents a front-panel check for the revised hardware. Confirm the board and firmware against the exact gaming signal before treating the receiver as ready for that setup. Even the revised A2A high-refresh inputs are 24 Gbps, so do not substitute another Yamaha model’s 40 Gbps capability. This is a purchase check, not a claim that every A2A listing has the older board.

How we reached this conclusion

Official board identification procedure crossed with remaining new stock and current gaming use. No seller stock age or performance is inferred.

1 model matches your answers1 receiver supports this setup

Your 5.1.2 layout needs 7 speaker channels. Your devices need 3 HDMI inputs, including 1 for 4K at 120Hz.

Yamaha RX-A2A

Needs another check

Confirm that this unit has the required HDMI hardware update before relying on 4K/120Hz.

Yamaha RX500A

Supports your setup

Supports 5.1.2 using the receiver's own amplifiers. Connects 3 HDMI devices, including 1 at 4K/120Hz. Use the required HDMI signal format, compatible cables and a display that accepts the requested signal.

A powered subwoofer is separate from the speaker-channel count. This checks one main room. Zone 2, bi-amping and unusual speaker assignments need another manual check. Allow ventilation space and confirm HDMI settings, cables and speaker impedance before installing.

What you give up

Every choice has a cost

If you choose Yamaha RX-A2A

  • Keeping 5.1.2 during second-room playback needs a separate zone amplifier and a supported source.

If you choose Yamaha RX500A

  • An extra HDMI switch adds another component to verify if the source collection grows beyond four.

Recommendation switch

The decision flips if...

Independent supported second-room content is essential

Choose Yamaha RX-A2A. A2A supplies the separate Zone 2 route.

Four sources suffice and receiver depth is the constraint

Choose Yamaha RX500A. RX500A has the shorter body, with clearance still required.

What matters in practice

Before you choose

You want films and kitchen music to coexist without adding equipment that does not fit the furniture.

Check these before buying

  • Write down the actual second-room source and connection type.
  • Measure the receiver, plugs and required ventilation together.
  • Confirm A2A board revision, firmware, US model and seller terms.

What this comparison cannot tell you

  • No measured sound or calibration winner. A2A hardware and zone-source qualifications apply beside the buying recommendation.
