Main trade-off
Denon PMA-900HNE
Bluetooth headphone transmission has source and HEOS grouping restrictions.
Head-to-head
Choose PMA-900HNE for built-in HEOS and AirPlay 2, a compatible MC cartridge or three optical sources. Keep a working PMA-600NE if its MM, two optical inputs and existing source equipment already cover the system. The 900HNE can transmit to Bluetooth headphones, but excludes AirPlay and active HEOS grouping. Its headphones need their own volume controls and Speakers Off for headphone-only playback.
Before you choose
A TV and disc transport can already occupy the 600NE’s two optical inputs. Add an optical-only game or computer audio interface and keeping everything plugged in becomes a different requirement. The 900HNE supplies a third optical input, avoiding cable swaps or a separate switch in that particular setup. If one device has a suitable coaxial or analog output, check that route first. When two optical inputs still cover every source and an existing streamer is staying, the higher model adds less practical value and keeping a working 600NE is reasonable.
What this is based on
Three existing source connections and inaccessible rear cables crossed with two versus three optical inputs and possible alternative outputs.
Main trade-off
Bluetooth headphone transmission has source and HEOS grouping restrictions.
Main trade-off
No built-in network playback or MC phono setting, and only two optical inputs.
Denon PMA-900HNE vs PMA-600NE for an upgrade from a working stereo. Check the third optical input, MC phono, network playback and Bluetooth headphone limits.
The useful upgrade question is whether an existing 600NE is missing a connection the household will use. Network functions, an MC cartridge or a third optical source can justify a change, while a covered MM and two-source system may not need one.
Winner by situation
900HNE has the third optical input.
900HNE can cover both functions internally after cartridge checks.
Keep the covered system unless a specific missing function justifies replacement.
900HNE excludes that transmission route, and 600NE has no Bluetooth transmitter.
What matters in practice
A TV and disc transport can already occupy the 600NE’s two optical inputs. Add an optical-only game or computer audio interface and keeping everything plugged in becomes a different requirement. The 900HNE supplies a third optical input, avoiding cable swaps or a separate switch in that particular setup. If one device has a suitable coaxial or analog output, check that route first. When two optical inputs still cover every source and an existing streamer is staying, the higher model adds less practical value and keeping a working 600NE is reasonable.
Three existing source connections and inaccessible rear cables crossed with two versus three optical inputs and possible alternative outputs.
For a 600NE owner planning both a low-output MC cartridge and HEOS playback, the 900HNE may consolidate functions that would otherwise need suitable external equipment. That matters in a cabinet already crowded by a turntable and disc player. Check the cartridge’s loading and output before assuming the MC setting removes its external stage. Reverse the upgrade when the cartridge is MM and a network player is already doing the required job. Replacing the amplifier then needs another concrete reason, rather than treating built-in versions of existing functions as new capabilities.
Two planned additions and limited cabinet space crossed with MC phono and built-in network playback. Existing equipment changes the value of consolidation.
The current 900HNE manual does support Bluetooth headphones, but an AirPlay stream cannot be transmitted and headphones cannot connect while the amplifier is grouped in HEOS or sharing its input with another HEOS device. A family expecting a seamless move from grouped music to private wireless listening may therefore need to change the playback route first. Use headphones with their own volume controls and select Speakers Off. Keep the 600NE if the existing wired routine already meets the need, rather than replacing it for a wireless transition the 900HNE cannot perform as imagined.
Whole-home playback followed by private listening crossed with simultaneous-use restrictions, speaker routing and headphone-owned volume. Bluetooth reception on 600NE is not treated as transmission.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | Denon PMA-900HNE | Denon PMA-600NE | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Network playback | Built-in HEOS and AirPlay 2. | No built-in network player. Bluetooth reception is available. | An existing external streamer can reduce the reason to replace the 600NE. |
| Phono compatibility | Selectable MM/MC input. | MM phono input. | A move to a compatible low-output MC cartridge can change the equipment list. |
| Optical socket budget | Three optical inputs. | Two optical inputs. | A third optical-only source can be the actual upgrade trigger. |
| Headphone route | Bluetooth transmission with source and group limits, plus wired headphones. | Bluetooth reception, with wired headphones that mute speakers and PRE OUT. | Name the source and the required handoff before calling wireless support a solution. |
What you give up
Recommendation switch
Choose Denon PMA-900HNE. 900HNE adds those documented routes.
Choose Denon PMA-600NE. Retain it rather than buying overlapping functions.
What matters in practice
More playback routes can justify replacement, but they do not guarantee the grouped or AirPlay headphone handoff a buyer may expect.
