Main trade-off
Garmin Forerunner 570 47 mm
Course guidance lacks the 970’s full surrounding maps. The selected 47 mm band starts at 135 mm.
Head-to-head
Choose 970 when unfamiliar routes make surrounding maps useful. Keep 570 on the shortlist for familiar courses and the same 1.4-inch display. The 970 also raises the multiband-with-music ceiling from eight to 12 hours, though neither figure is a runtime promise. Its running economy feature needs qualifying outdoor runs and a compatible accessory such as HRM 600. Both still need your phone for ordinary calls.
Before you choose
A prepared course is enough when the plan is to follow that course. A weekend walk with a tired child, an unexpected closure or a dog that needs a shorter route creates a different question: what is around us? The 970 supplies surrounding maps on the wrist, while 570 is built around course guidance. That can make 970 useful even for someone who does not race. It does not prove a shortcut is open, accessible or dog-friendly. If the phone is always available and you are happy to stop and consult it, 570 can remain the more sensible purchase.
What this is based on
An unplanned family route change crossed with course-only versus surrounding-map support. No route safety, opening-hours or accessibility inference.
Main trade-off

Main trade-off
Running economy needs compatible extra hardware and eligible outdoor runs. It is not generated from indoor or trail sessions alone.

Forerunner 570 vs 970 for weekday training and weekend travel. Compare map detours, music battery and the extra sensor needed for running economy.
These Garmin training watches share a 47 mm case class, 1.4-inch AMOLED screen, music and paired-phone calls. A runner moving between familiar training and unfamiliar places can plausibly choose either. The map workflow and accessory-dependent metrics create the upgrade decision.
Winner by situation
570 retains the same screen size and paired-phone convenience.
970 adds surrounding maps. Check the route itself before taking a shortcut.
570’s stated ceiling is below the plan. 970 still needs reserve and real-use testing.
970’s feature requires different sessions and compatible extra hardware.

The 970’s running economy estimate needs several qualifying outdoor run or track sessions and an accessory that measures step speed loss, such as HRM 600. Garmin excludes indoor and trail runs from updating it. A parent who trains on a treadmill while children sleep and only runs trails at weekends should not buy 970 mainly for that number. The routine itself is missing an input. Maps or music endurance may still justify 970, but an existing HRM-Pro strap does not automatically remove the extra hardware requirement for step speed loss.
Indoor weekdays plus trail weekends crossed with the manual’s activity and accessory prerequisites. Does not claim improved performance or medical value.
For an outing expected to last nine hours with downloaded music throughout, 570’s eight-hour multiband-with-music ceiling is already below the planned duration. The 970’s 12-hour ceiling is a better starting point, but it is not a guarantee of finishing. Navigation, display settings, temperature and battery age can consume the apparent margin. If music comes from the phone instead, this particular watch-battery constraint changes. Count the whole recorded outing, including waiting and stops, before using a finish-time estimate to choose the watch.
Nine-hour illustrative outing compared with official combined-mode ceilings. This is an exclusion test, not a runtime prediction or matched performance test.

Meaningful differences
| What changes | Garmin Forerunner 570 47 mm | Garmin Forerunner 970 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Changing a route | Prepared course guidance. | Full maps and routing support. | A course line and the surrounding street network answer different questions when plans change. |
| Music and multiband together | Up to 8 hours. | Up to 12 hours. | Compare the combined mode with the whole outing, including stops and a reserve. |
| Screen and supplied weight | 1.4-inch AMOLED, 50 g. | 1.4-inch AMOLED, 56 g. | This upgrade does not enlarge the screen. It adds capability and 6 g. |
| Running economy | Not the documented 970 running-economy route. | Qualifying outdoor runs and step-speed-loss accessory required. | An existing generic chest strap or treadmill habit does not complete the setup. |
